General Carowinds discussion

Looking at the superstructure of the flyers, I see that it is welded. I don't think that this welding would have happened in 1923, but rivets would have. What kind of rebuilding was done by carowinds when they inherited the flyers? Are we looking at anything at carowinds built in 1923 or has the entire ride been replaced over the years?

Also, with all the snapping, wouldn't the flyers have fallen apart with rivets?

I imagine very little of the original ride from 70 years ago is actually remaining, but to what extent I don't really know. I do know that a new motor was installed this year after it was moved to Carowinds, which allows it to get up to speed quicker and stop much faster.

The original engine was gasoline powered but that was changed out long ago at PKI.

I'll check with a friend of mine who helped set up the ride. Seems like he told me what all they did but I can't remember. I'll try and talk to him tomorrow since I am curious myself.

Also, the Flyers opened in 1936 at Coney Ohio, not 1923. Still very old regardless.....

I can't believe the flyers are that old. Are the tubs the originals?
The ride looks very new. Like I've said before, with the abuse those
cables endure, I hope they maintain it well.
Maybe swampfox can find out and tell us which parts are left from 1923.

So the flyers were at Coney Island, OH and PKI only?

Someone told me Coney Island, NY.

I guess they got their Coney's confused.

^That was a bit off topic, Don't ya think? ;)

Anywho....

I doubt that most of the original parts are still on the ride. Maybe a few peices, but probably not many peices.

But it dosen't really matter, since part of the hyper is going through that area and they have to tear the flyers down because part of one of it's camelback's is goign in that spot....

I talked to a friend of mine today who helped construct the Flyers and he told me the main thing Carowinds did to the ride (besides the new paint scheme) was installing a new motor. The ride had a 25hp motor and Carowinds installed a 40hp motor with dynamic braking. The ride will still maintain the same speed with the 40hp motor as it did with the 25hp motor.

Wouldn't more horsepower produce high speeds?

I suppose it's possible but the configuration is set so that it maintains the same speed. Man, can you imagine the snaps if it were any faster?

They could run it faster at C3...

*hint hint, cough cough, nudge nudge*
