General Carowinds discussion

Saw this over on not-quite-dead-yet RRC:

And thought, hmmmm - which woodies are in NC that could be repaired? All are at Carowinds, and only 1.5 are technically in NC: Hurler, and T-Road is in both states. Scooby / FOCer is in SC - although many commonly consider everything in the park to be in Charlotte, NC, so I wouldn't take it too literally.

Hurler getting some love? That would be my first guess, since Scooby is small enough for the park to handle most anything on it, and seemed to be in fine shape last year. T-Road just had GCI spend nearly a year working on it, so I can't see it needing any major work. Hurler, although I personally like the ride, is the obvious choice for some work. It can, and should, be smoother than it has been the last several years.

While I want the 873 foot mega-giga-rocket coaster under the bridge as much as anyone else (note the sarcasm, kids) - I also like seeing the park take care of the rides it already has, especially the wood. It's a good sign that in an "off" year the park spent the time and $$ on T-Road, and if Hurler is getting some work this year when we are getting a "major" attraction that's an even better sign.

That is good news if it turns out to be true.

Hurler was actually in my top 10 woodie list for a long time, until it started to get so rough.

I'll never forget that year at C3 when it was screaming fast that morning (the year it 200 degrees in the park).

Honestly though I can't see it ever getting better unless they do a major reprofile of that first turn after the drop.

Blah blah blah though, I've said it all before.

What do you mean your seat came off? That sounds like a problem with the train and not with the track.

Slamming into the brake run, the seat, presumably where it is bolted to the car, dislodged and slid forward about a foot. Which was a little unsettling.

The general maintenance team has to have their work cut out for them on this train. How anything stays bolted down traveling that notoriously rough track is a wonder.

If you are talking about the seat bottom, then it does NOT bolt in place. It is held in place by friction, however it is rare that they slide out of place. We were told just to slide it back in place and keep operating.

I have had the seat in the very back car do that before. It was a little scary, but it never moved until we hit the brakes. Anyways, I love Hurler, but it reallt, REALLY needs some major love! I hope to see it get better attention from the park in the following months!

Nothing like being at a sub standard park riding a coaster when half way through the ride the seat along with the backing comes loose. It gave a new meaning to hanging on for your life. Lok on the guys face was priceless when I handed him the whole seat and said I think you have a small problem that you might want to call maintance.

Needless to say I have no real plans to go back to Alabama's MisAdventure as long as I live.

Great to see that Hurler and that other Woodie in Cali are getting some love though.

from Screamscape concerning the CA park......

"Park News - (1/13/09) I’ve been told that the park is trying to improve Grizzly’s reputation and currently working on installing some new trackwork to sections of the ride, most notably on the large turnaround. Anyone want to go by and snap some photos?"

If you drive by the park you will notice a couple of huge chunks removed from Thunder Road...Looks like they are finishing the rebuilding of the entire coaster. And they closed Hurler down during SCarowinds for maintenance and they are probably still doing it.

Drive by the park! Its the strangest thing to see that chunk missing!

I noticed the work as well. I just wish they would do the entire ride.

It looked weird last year with both turnarounds missing.

I was passing TR, and the entire back end / turn around is gone... so it is safe to say that Thunder Road is the coaster.
