General Carowinds discussion

I'm not sure that the actual link to the photo works so for those interested in seeing an aerial photo of the property that Carowinds is on from 1968, '65 or '60, go to:

http://www.historicaerials.com

type in "carowinds" under address, "charlotte" and "NC" in the appropriate areas.

Here's a hint to make things interesting. Under the "overlays" button, click on "all roads" and it will overlay the new roads onto the old photo before those roads were built. It's really interesting. I believe I see the old McClellan house that was left on the Carowinds property when it opened, back by the Shortline RR. You can move the photo around with the mouse (click and drag).

And for those history or defunct coaster buffs like me, you might even find that holy grail. I did! A twisty Fred Church coaster in Waukesha Beach, WI. I now know the layout!!

Have fun!

That is a truly awesome find Ken. The 1978 image with White Lightning made me drool a bit. :o

Google Earth recently introduced a new feature with historical imagery, but the oldest date most places have are early 90s. I suppose its only a matter of time before Google purchases the rights to use these photos as well.

What's even more impressive is when you select the "compare tools" button, choose the "dissolve" button and slide the vertical line with the red arrow left to right and see a 40+ year transformation right before your eyes. It's even more amazing that the 40 years worth of photos were taken from the exact same flight path.

The only reason the park was open on November 1st last year is because it fell on a Sunday. The Sunday on or after Halloween is generally always the last operational day for Carowinds.
