This simple statement is enough to tell me that you have never been on a good wooden coaster. If wooden coasters aren't supposed to be smooth then why bother with the complete retracking of Thunder Road?
There is a difference between "rough", "wooden coaster rough" and "smooth". Most wooden coasters aren't of course smooth by any means, but you should not be coming off of them with injuries or saying you'll never do it again. There is a fine line woodies can have that can vary from day to day, hour to hour, or seat to seat. A ride that is bearable in the morning may be absolute hell just a few hours later.
That being said I do not currently find Hurler to be rough. In my ten years of riding it I don't think it's ever been so bad where I have not wanted to ride ever again. I rode it twice at Coaster Stock, (once near the front, once in the back, both times NOT on a wheel seat) and it was perfectly fine. I'm not a fan of the trim, but they should by no means tear it down. (yet)
