acoording to the caro-blog on Carowinds.com in the last 2 offseasons they have done renovations to Thunder Road such as a new lift hill chain,more extensive track replacement,etc

And by the way when did Thunder Road open? was it when the park opened or was it a couple years later?

Carowinds opened in 1973. Thunder Road opened in 1976. The last several off seasons (4 I think?) the ride has been completely rebuilt minus the section just after leaving the station.
