General Carowinds discussion

I've witnessed several people that wasted their money on that contraption. At the beginning of the 2001 season, the price for it was ridiculously high. As the season went on, the prices dropped dramatically. It was kinda sad seeing how the park was that desperate to get more people to try it.

Yeah, it is like a waste to the park :( but when you see that on the interstate you kinda know that is carowinds. Well for me, I would take that dwn and put up a really intense flat ride. B)

I hope you're talking about the Skycoaster. Because if you can see the Flight School site from the interstate, you've got very good eyesight :)

Besides, to me, the thing that makes me think of Carowinds, when I get close to the park, is the Skytower! When I was a kid, going down 77, I'd get all giddy at the sight of the Skytower. I knew I was at Carowinds.

OK I have a confession to make to the group. During the 2001 Season in June while I was working for another company inside the park, and I was approached by one of the Big Wigs from the company that operated the Flight School. They asked me if I would like to be the manager of that location... I think that the crew that operated the location before all Quit.... but I did accept the position thinking that this would help me out by making me look good for the park officials etc. 2 Locations brining in lots of Revenue to the park.... After All CW likes to have it's Concession Companies making them money. But Anyways, I had to hire a whole crew, train and start from scratch. This was not an easy task. Once everything was settled I realized that this location was a waste. The attractions were fun don't get me wrong, but I don't think I would pay that much for it. I had to charge what I did because if I didn’t then $$$ etc wouldn't look good. That Location did close around Labor Day because I did not have enough staff to run both my locations. This one did not make any money. My other location was killing FS in numbers by 3x.

I think that this is a great attraction, however I don't think that it should have been in a park like Carowinds. I think that it would have done better in a smaller park where you have to pay to ride the rides. Heck I think it could even go into the Mall.

I do want to apoligize for any grammer errors. My computer is Slow and I try to check before I post I plan on going to another computer and doing a grammer check. I hope to edit this with the correct grammer.

I have seen many simulators just like that in malls. I am suprised Carowinds recieved the Flight School thing in the first place. That is a good spot for a flat ride. And besides, why have a little pod simulator that you have to pay for when you already have a big theater for simulation that's free?

Ha, that is too funny that you operated the flight school thing. I worked in games in County Fair when that came out, and I remember we had to send employees over there to sometimes run the cash register or try and get people to do it. I just think it is tacky now, it closed at the end of the 2001 season and is still sitting there doing nothing. It is a total eye-sore.

Flight School was one of those attractions where you had to pay per experience. There were two 'flights'. For both you were strapped to some sort of bungee cord. One 'flight' involved a vertical trampoline. You were yanked upwards while repelling along the vertical trampoline. You did this several times. The other 'flight' was horizontal. If I remember correctly, you glided across a horizontal wire zip cord style. Initially there was a separate charge for each of these two 'flights', but when they failed to make enough money from it they combined it all for five dollars.

Ok you were not attached to a bungee cord; you were attached to a cable. It was an Auto Belay system. This is a product that the Company has produced. Not only do they have the Zip line and the Vertical Trampoline, but they have other products the link is Extreme Engineering Just in case if anyone is wandering. Yes it did close towards the end. It was more of the parks choice than mine. I did not kick or scream or fuss. It was less of a hassle for me.

It was very tacky sitting there. I think that it was still there last season. It did not open if I am correct. Please correct me if i am wrong.

OK I am actually gonna get back on to the Topic that this was origanilly. I did hear the same Info that Mr. Anomaly has heard. They will be Reuiniting the Theater back with it's original Film that the theater was designed for. "DAYS OF THUNDER" It however will not be 3-D. I was told that theater is not designed for 3-D. Anomoly I hope that the eyes of the Oracle are correct. Or else you will be proven to be the False Neo ;)

And as far as 3D, isn't Spongebob in 3D? So why couldn't they do it?

It seems the "left" side of the theater has the equipment for 3D - I'd guess it uses a different projector system than the standard Iwerks theater. The "right" side is always where they put the 2D show, including Elvira's movie at Scarowinds.

If they could change the film easily and do 3D on both sides, I'm sure we would've seen them use it for Spongebob on busy days instead of just sitting there closed. Although sitting there closed is a far better use than showing that "Indiana Jones" abomination.

Days of Thunder should be much better than any of the other stuff they've had on that side in years, so I'm glad to hear that if it's true.

I ditto that

I never saw the Indian Jones movie on side B, but don't plan to since I heard it sucked. I pray DOT will be on side B again.
