Even as unlikely as it is, hearing "New Restraints" on any Arrow Looper is an amazing idea. :D :D

Is it true that Carolina Cyclone was the first roller coaster in the world to have 4 inversions?

Doesn't Demon at California's Great America have 4 inversions? It was opened 4 years before Cyclone... I just discovered this by accident (I had never heard of Demon until about 5 minutes ago) so I might be missing something.

EDIT: Just saw that Demon originally opened with 2 inversions and then the 2 loops were added in 1980. (Which is actually the same year Cyclone opened, but Cyclone must have been first, ha) I knew I was missing something :P

I just learned something I never knew. Demon originally opened in 1976 as Turn of the Century at both the California and Illinois parks. It only had two inversions, both corkscrews. The first part of the ride was two airtime hills, both apparently with insane airtime. In 1980 they added the two loops to both of the coasters and renamed them Demon. Apparently the Cyclone opened before either of them, making it the first with four inversions.

I wasn't aware that the park in Cali had a Demon also (previously Turn of the Century). I know the one in Illinois. I was going to respond, and say that it was actually in Illinois. But there certainly might have been clones that I was unaware of.

That was my first "big" steel coaster as a kid, back when it was still Turn of the Century. Shows how old I am...

They also got a new ride back back while it was still Turn of the Century. The new ride was called Tidal Wave. The Carowinds regulars would recognize Tidal Wave as a clone of what you guys called White Lightning, I believe.

They were never really "clones."

Marriot, the owner of the hotel chain, opened two identical parks in May of 1976 near Chicago and San Francisco. The parks were fairly identical in park layout, and the collection of rides. A third park was planned near Washington DC, but never materialized.

In 1984 Marriot sold both parks, one to Six Flags and one to Kings Entertainment Company (which later was purchased by Paramount in 1992) and the two parks took drastically different directions.

I don't need to go into the complete history of the parks, but http://www.greatamericaparks.com/ does a very, very good job of covering all the old rides and changes over the Marriot years. It's definitely worth your time to browse around.

Also worth browsing are either of their wiki pages - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Californi ... at_America and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Flags_Great_America .

I go to Carowinds about twice a year, and typically on a Saturday. This past Saturday, June 13, was the most crowded I have seen the park when I've been there since some time back in the 1980's. I know there have probably been some very busy times, and maybe I've just been there on less crowded days for some reason.

This past Saturday, the temps were hot, the crowds were out, and the lines were long. When I first got there, I tried to get a soft drink cup for $15, where you get refills all year for .99 each. The first place we went was in Joe Cool's Cafe. After picking it up, we stood in line to pay. The cashier had to leave for change, so we stood in that line for about 3-4 minutes, while the other line was moving. When we could, we finally went to the other line, which then had the same thing happen. Cashier went to get more money for change. When I got up to her she said I would have to go back to the other line, which was now very long, because she didn't have change. Then she took the next person behind me that paid with a debit card. She never even asked me if I was going to use a card or cash. We were just stunned that they had no change and moved us along without ever asking. Bad service. So I just put the cup down and left. We then went to one of the outdoor places to get it, and they had no ice, so I got a nice warm coke zero. Not a great way to start the day, Carowinds.

Went to Boomerang Bay to try and get to some water to cool off, and the place was slammed. I think we stayed about an hour and a half and decided today wasn't our day for Carowind, and left. If I had had to pay a single day ticket it would have sucked, but since we have season passes, we just chalked it up to coming on the wrong day. Early June, vacations, graduation, may have made it busier than I normally see it.

If you've read this far, I just wondered for the regulars that go quite often, was this Saturday an anomaly? Is Carowinds usually more crowded early in the Summer or could the park be seeing a resurgence with the new coaster and park renovations?

^^ There was a concert Saturday night. I think tickets included park passes. That may explain why Carowinds was extra crowded.

I was there Sunday morning. The place was empty and most rides were walk on and stay on. Juke Box Diner had trays of water cups that we very much appreciated.

Has anyone gone on Father's Day? It's next Sunday and it is a season pass bring-a-friend day for $20. I'm afraid that it will be too crowded because of the discount and special day. Anyone have experience or insight? I almost definitely would not go if it was a Saturday, but Sundays seem safer, even on a discount day.

Like the others, I have not gone once on a Saturday this year. My first time going to Carowinds was on a Saturday (in 2012). It was crowded on that day. I don't remember what part of the Summer it was though. I didn't go back for over 2 years, so that should indicate that I really didn't enjoy myself too much that day.

We got season passes this year (yay, Fury). We've gone a bunch of times so far (but not on Saturdays). The lines for the rides have been pretty good most all of the time. We pretty much stick to Fury if the lines are getting long at all, as Fury is the only one that can consistently keep the line moving at a decent pace.

Now about the experience at the food service places? Your experience could happen on any day, and crowd size doesn't seem to make one bit of difference. If the park is pretty much empty, there will be fewer food places open, with fewer cooks and cashiers working. So the exact same thing can (and sometimes will) happen on any given day. The food service department of Carowinds is an absolute train wreck. There was a mother who just exploded on the employees of Papa Luigi's Pizza on this past Friday night. She was pretty funny. She said, "I'm from south Georgia, so I've had to deal with people who are slow at their jobs my whole life. This [Carowinds experience] is incredible! Y'all have no business working in a service industry!" There was one completely overwhelmed girl working her butt off (and really struggling), and about 4 other employees who were just standing there talking to each other.

My wife said to her, "You said exactly what I was thinking, but would never say out loud." And we chatted with her as we ate. She was so agitated she kept standing up, and pacing around the dining area as she kept ranting. When the cashier outside asked her the problem, and then tried to defend the workers, she went off for another 5 minutes.

I don't bother complaining and I certainly don't yell at anybody. I just move on. I've just come to expect the worst. Anything better than that becomes a pleasant surprise. Setting your expectations low, is the way to go.

You did everything right (changing lanes and even entirely changing places, when things go bad). I don't have any other advice beyond that. All you can do is hope and pray when it is time to eat or get a drink at Carowinds. Sometimes it is not so bad.

Food Service at Carowinds is an overall joke, cold food and employees that don't or can't hear. I rarely eat at a park operated restaurant. Chickie's & Pete's is the best and SweetFrog makes a good snack. I got a cup of yogurt for a $1.50 yesterday.
