General Carowinds discussion

I understand what your saying but in all retrospect. all inverted coasters are based after Batman, and all looping coasters are based after the corkscrew, or to get more technical one can say that all looping coasters were based after the coaster below. Thats just a book and its written for, if i must say, the "general public". Its not a completely factual book just an opinionate document when it comes to things like that.

I would say that montu and TG are similar but I don't think tg was actually "based on" montu. These coasters may have similar elements but they offer very different rides.

Montu was awesome when the breaks were like a straightaway and didn't slow you down; the 2nd half was sooo fast and crazy. Now its really boring and sloooooooooow!

Similar=based on in mines and several others book. Take perlious plunge. Its based on the other shoot-the-chutes @ other cedar fair parks and very similar in design, except ones taller and steeper. Although top gun lacks the extra vertical loop and brake run its still tightly based on montu. They even share the same inversion order (w/ the exception of the vertical loop).
Lets compare:

Montu: Lift, drop to the left, vertical loop, trenchy tunnel, immelman, zero g, batwing (half way in trench), mid course, vertical loop (half buried), some turns, flat spin.

Top Gun: Lift, drop to the right, vertical loop, trenchy tunnel, immelman, zero g, batwing (half way in tunnel) little bunny hop, flat spin.

Coincidence I think not..............

So w/ your theory you would say that scream! isnt "based" on medusa east.............being that they are similar but not identical??

Just because it's similar doesn't mean it's based on an earlier ride. They were both designed by the same company, so of course they'll be alike. There is only so much you can do with B&M inverts, and to keep them interesting elements need to be one after another. I think it's more of a coincidence that these two have similar layouts...it's not like B&M finished Montu and then when they were contacted by Carowinds to design TG said, "Oooh! Let's make it almost exactly like Montu!" :D B) ;)

To get into this whole TG vs. Montu discussion, a few years ago I heard that Top Gun was originally suppose to have a cobra roll. Then, they went with the Batwing. It certainly would be nice to have the cobra roll, but I'm glad that we got the Batwing. I'm surprised that we haven't seen more of these elements on inverted coasters considering the abundance of cobra rolls on these type of coasters.

As for the two, I prefer Montu. Its bigger, faster, and the batwing is much more intense than our batwing (which is more spread out to accomodate the walkway.) The braking doesn't bother me. I'm not the type to get out of whack over braking on a coaster but that's a discussion for another day. Also, Montu is only one of two coasters that I've greyed out on (Hulk being the other.) Now, that's a ride.

Now, if Top Gun had the cobra roll, what coaster would everybody been saying it would be similar too?

Actually thats exactly what happen!! My sources told me that they went down to tampa when it first open and were in talks w/ the gm of busch gardens about relocating the actual montu. But do to the fact that it get in the way of the hyper thats comming next year :o (dang it I told, boy are my sources gonna have my head) on that one they decided to just "recreate" it.

Have you ever notice why the coaster end w/ such force and has 2 brake sections its because there was suppose to be a half enclosed version of the vertical loop on montu. So they said that they would wait a few years and come out w/ the cheaper montu. Im telling you they wanted that coaster @ the park that bad. But due to the fact that Mike Crowder got cheap and Mel was out of town to push the issue it was shorten. They were even gonna have the crocs in the tunnel for the batwing, but they feared that the locals would report the attacks  (whimps). See how both coasters feature blue in their structure, and both are themed to flight!!

ITs funny you say that because after me and another "connecter" investigated that strenous claim. Them me and the tea cup kids came across this pic of top gun in PGA. Now Mel and my sources told me about the cobra roll that was on top gun over there but i never believed it.................

It was removed because like every other cool thing Removed from great america, it was a hit and thats not the image great america wants to be known for!! I also had the chance to experience the coaster w/ the element........it was awsome!! There was even a little launch before the cobra roll to get it up to speed. And B&M was soley responsible for the launch. So they do launches you just have to drop a few names!!

Speaking of B&M launches............just wait to the 2006 season @ Carowinds............thats all my sources let me say

So, your sources are hinting that in 2006 that Carowinds might be getting a launcher. That would be pretty cool. To bad they still don't have White Lightning, alot of people I know say that that was a fun ride. I wouldn't know, they tore it down before I got to ride it. Especially since it was just lap bars through that loop. That would be soooo awseme because you wouldn't have all of the restricting over the shoulder harnessess, but, the're safer.

I also would like to see a new wooden coaster. I would like to see a wooden coaster like The Beast, Son of the Beast (both from Paramounts Kings Island) and like Gwazi (Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.) I've never riden any of these, but they all look really fun, and I've heard rave reviews about them. It would be really cool to have a inversion in a woodie, except more than Son of the Beast, or any other woodie that inverts you, (Son of the Beast is the only one I know of) so we can take a title for the most inversions in a woodie! What do yall think?

^ My opinion: No. Please, please please, no more inversions on wooden coasters. Although I am one of those rare people who likes Son of Beast...
Now would I like a woodie? Yes. A clone of Thunderhead will be just fine. :D

I know, I can't wait for Thunderhead to open up a Dollywood. It looks like it'll be so much fun!

Can someone please tell me the big deal about Thunderhead?
And personally, I've never ridden a woodie w/ a loop, but I think it would just seem
unatural....keep the loops to the steel coasters!

P.S.- I, too, know the straight-away on TG. I like it cause it gives you a split second to catch ur bearings!

It's GCI, and it's at one of the greatest theme parks in the country. That's the big deal. :)

<a href='http://www.acesoutheast.org/thunder/' target='_blank'>Thunderhead</a> opened on April 3rd.

Well on thing it is great theming. The other thing is it is the first roller coaster with the first fly through station. Another thing is it is dollywoods first big woodie.

I was born in Tampa, and I rode Gwazi. It's really out of control and just...well...great. I loved it. Kumba is getting rough though.

About TG being a Montu based attraction, i don't think so. First of all it was custom designed specifically for the layout at Carowinds, secondly, most coasters do follow that similar sequence of elements. What does Kumba do, Drop left...Vertical loop, I Dive(as I call it), barrel roll, cobra roll hill/brakes corkscrew... ect. basically the same thing. Its not unusual for coasters to follow that basic layout. So you would have to say all coasters are based after all coasters.
