Vehicle accidents still kill people wearing seatbelts. Sometimes the seatbelt is what actually killed the person.

Coasters are thrill rides. Take out the thrill and it doesn't do much.

If the ride needed seatbelts it would have came installed with them. I know a little on how they work from reading patents and papers on it. I know enough to know that seat belts are there for insurance companies. Not safety.

Jackrabbit at Kennywood operated for 70 years with no restraint of any kind, and it's doubledown is more forceful than any airtime on any B&M. When the insurance company finally came calling they installed...a severely loose no adjustable leather strap that has a lot of slack and no way to tighten. 80 years and the ride still runs safe.

My opinion is exactly the opposite of Josie's.

The perceived danger is part of the thrill of riding coasters. When they make it "safer" I feel it's less exciting. I would ride Intimdator without belts or leg restraints, just hold on tight and scream loudly.

PS there is a reason all cars have seatbelts but not all seatbelts have shoulder straps. Which I believe ARE required in all vehicles currently in production.

Oh and if they were automatically safer then why aren't kids of a certain age allowed to ride in a front seat? (Hint: it's because the shoulder strap could hurt them).

I honestly believe you could ride any B&M hyper in existence without any restraints whatsoever without falling out (unless you actively tried to). The seats are deep enough and the headrests high enough.

I'd do it.

Edwardo, airbag is the primary reason child under 12(I think, it may be 8). Some cars have shoulder straps on all five seats.

WAT! Airbags would be useless if you fell out or the train derailed you fool!

What we need is a big giant airbag on the ground. Or maybe we could put on individual airbag suits...

If the train derailed, you'd be dead with or without seat belts, harness or no harness.

Would any of you be willing to ride Intimidator without ANY kind of restraint or harness???
Just hold on to the arm rest on the drops.

For bicycles, NC requires riders under 16 to wear helmets.

If they locked you in like they do an electric chair. Or perhaps duct tape. I say like the car in Demolition Man that was covered in Styrofoam when it got into a wreck. Thats futuristic safety the higher ups should take into account. Classic early 90's movies could take care of a lot of our 1st world problems.

When seatbelts are added to a coaster with a lap bar (like Intimidator), the seatbelt becomes the primary restraint because it is closest to your body. That makes the lap bar the secondary restraint. Does that make you twice as safe? You would have to do a little statistics calculations concerning the probably of failure for each restraint.

I will say that the Jack Rabbit at Kennywood could definitely eject you on the double down if you rode in the last car of the train, did not have that "seatbelt," and did not hold on to the grab bar.
