The Great Gasp at Six Flags Over Georgia is coming down to make way for their hyper next year. It's sad to see it go, but I can't say that I'm not excited for what is coming next year.

Atlanta - Six Flags Over Georgia is offering some great ways to end
your summer on a high note this year.  The Last Gasp of Summer marks
the end of weekday operations at the park, and the final drops of The
Great Gasp.  Two weeks of special concerts and events are planned
during the celebration!

During The Last Gasp of Summer, guests of the park will have an
opportunity to be one of the last riders on The Great Gasp parachute
drop ride.  Riders on August 13 and 14 will receive a limited edition
collector's button commemorating the final drops on The Great Gasp.

Built in 1976, The Great Gasp has been a favorite with guests seeking
the thrill of a 200-foot parachute drop.  Sporting magnificent views
of the Atlanta skyline, the Great Gasp has stood as a local icon,
carrying over 15 million riders to lofty heights and back.  Final
rides will take place August 13 and 14, after which The Great Gasp
will be retired following almost 30 years of service.

Six Flags Over Georgia has teamed up with Publix supermarkets to
deliver "School Supplies for Cool Kids."  On July 31, receive $15 off
a daily admission ticket at the park front gate with your gift of
school supplies.  Supplies will go to underprivileged children in the
Atlanta area.

Kids Fest brings one last concert series of the summer to Six Flags
Over Georgia!  The fun starts Saturday, August 6 with pop star Aaron
Carter at 5 p.m.  Immediately following is recording artist Christy
Carlson Romano.  Wrapping up Sunday, August 7 is Atlanta native
Raven-Symone at 5 p.m.  All concerts are free with park admission.

In addition to the music, kids can drop by the Axis Arena during Kids
Fest to play the all-new Kids Next Door trading card game at the
interactive treehouse.  Over in Bugs Bunny World kids will find
balloon animals, games, modeling school tryouts, face painting and
much, much more.

It's not too late to pack in multiple days of fun this summer!  Get a
season pass at Publix for just $54.99 and come both days. Six Flags
Over Georgia is open for daily operation through August 14, then
weekend operation through October 30.  Please visit sixflags.com for a
complete schedule.

I'm sad that the ride will go as well, (see avatar) because it is an all-around nice ride, but also because it is one of the few parachute drops still around.

However, I'm grateful that the park announced the ride will be closing and I'm sure that this will be an appropriate send off.

I'm also sure that whatever is coming next year will be a worthy replacement. B)

I've heard that they are going to use it for spare parts at one of the other Six Flags.

Bummer :(

I remember how excited I was when I rode the Great Gasp on it's opening year. Waited nearly 2 hours! This was the closest thing to a Drop Zone type ride going although it really more or less "lowered" you downward. Still fun though and it's too bad they can't move it to another location in the park.

Oh they can, they just dont want to!!

I think its a huge twist because everyone was like oh looping star ship is leaving but low and behold. After all that begging I did to one of the park people (even have it on tape :P) to keep the ride this is what he does! Wait until I see him again!

I have one very vivid memory of this ride when I was like 4 or 5.

I got very upset because I was too short to go on it. Maybe I was younger, can't remember exactly when it was.

Anyway, I cried big ol' Crocidile tears over that ride. lol

Maybe we should start a letter campaign. "Save Great Gasp!!!". lol

Bummer  :(

I've also read that some of the chairs have been sold to private individuals. (One is said to be placed in the giftshop with the Mindbender and Freefall models)

The removal seems weird considering the park refurbished the ride over last winter, with all new parachutes and some new paint. Atleast it will look good during its final days. :) :(

Sorry for the double post, but I thought I would point out a nice video tribute to the Great Gasp that was on WXIA out of Atlanta as part of the evening news cast:

I feel confident that Boomerang Bay will be the expansion for 2006. Some of the people I talked to that work in D&E said that orignally it was to be a waterpark expansion, then they changed it to a coaster. Now it's back to waterpark.

But Paramount has notoriously given the term "flip-flop" a new meaning so I won't believe anything until it has been officially released.

They also tossed around the idea of a go-kart track last year. Maybe that will be back in the mix.
