General Carowinds discussion

My friend James and I hit Scarowinds on opening night like we usually do, so we can get the most rides with the least waits possible. We got a shock / surprise / scare right from the get-go, as they informed us that they're charging Platinum passholders the $8 parking.

Let me rant on this one for a bit. This is the most assinine thing I've seen them do in years. First off, there was no warning - so I was caught with NO cash to pay for the parking fee as I was going to use my debit card to pay for entry and anything else I needed. To their credit they let me in without paying after I explained this, but James had to pay. If I had the money on me I would've, but I totally didn't expect this since I've gone to Scarowinds at least once a year since 2001, and have never paid parking with the Gold pass. At least if we were forewarned, we'd have carpooled and split the cost instead of taking seperate cars.

This just smacks as nothing but pure greed. They already charge passholders for Scarowinds entry, which I've never complained about although I'd obviously rather get in for free. We do get in half price so it's not too bad. But it strikes me as odd that I can buy a season pass for $65 that gets me free parking and unlimited entry, yet they want to charge me $25 to go to the park for 5 hours and park my car. It seems counterproductive to hype up the season pass benefits to get us to buy a pass for next year, and then try to nickle-and-dime us when we go to Scarowinds. Not that $8 or even $25 is that big of a deal really, but from a customer relations standpoint it's that kind of theme-park greed mentality that puts a bad taste in people's mouth.

Ok, on to the trip report for Scarowinds. Despite having free entry for people doing a blood drive it wasn't terribly crowded. We were there near the head of the line and got a 2nd-row ride on Borg's first train of the night after they dropped the ropes. From there we went to Top Gun for several rides, then headed around the park to check out the various haunted attractions and favorite rides.

The haunted attractions were a mixed bag this year, as was the overall park theming. The park felt a bit less decorated than in years past, with some old favorite theming bits missing. From worst to best, I'll give a rundown of the haunted attractions:

Dracula's Haunted Mansion: This is a film in the 2D side of the Action F/X theater that during some past Scarowinds has shown an Elvira "ride simulation". They've shown some truly crappy things in this theater over the years, but Dracula takes the crown by a LARGE margin. It makes Smash Factory and the Indiana Jones thing look like world-class entertainment. This film barely vibrated the seats and never had ANY feeling of movement. There was nothing redeeming about it - period.

Alcatraz - this was in the former Flight Zone / waveswinger location, and was yet another name for a Scarowinds tradition. This of course was a maze through chain-link fences and mirrors, with some characters jumping out at you at various spots. This year they're prison inmates, in other years they've been insane asylum patients or zombies, but it's always pretty much the same. It's been done better in years past, although this one is probably the most dependent on the group you go in with. It can be great fun if your group has lots of girls / women who scream, but is pretty lame otherwise.

Alien Crypt in 3D: This was pretty much the same as in years past, in yet another new location - behind Cyclone where the Toxic Waste attraction was last year. The 3D is good in spots, with some hovering skeletons that appear to be coming out of the walls and some characters that blend into the scenery that jump out at you. The music / sound effects weren't ear-splitting like they have been in some years so that made it more enjoyable. And yes, it still has the rotating tunnel you walk through that makes you feel like you yourself is spinning that is always one of my favorite moments during Scarowinds.

Sleepy Hollow Horror - this was in last year's Haunted Circus location behind the log flume. There was nothing spectacular about this one but I thought it was much better than last year's trail, and I liked it pretty well.

Nightmare Manor - this was in it's usual location, in the picnic shelter beside Animation Station. The trail leading up to it was missing much of the theming from previous years, and the haunted house part seemed a bit shorter than last year as well, although it was still well done with several good effects. Good, but a bit of a letdown from previous years when this one seemed to get better and better.

The most fun haunted attraction this year was easily Friday the 13th, which was held in the Paramount Theater. This had actors playing "camp counselors" that interacted quite a bit with the audience, and of course a movie with various clips from Friday the 13th over the years. Overall it was very fun if you enjoy horror movies at all and aren't bothered by some pretty graphic scenes. I love horror movies so enjoyed it, but some might not so be forewarned. The actors were campy / cheesy of course but their parts were pretty well done. This was shown every hour on the half-hour.

Overall the Scare part of Scarowinds was a bit of a disappointment from years past, but it wasn't bad - and having it much warmer than usual probably didn't help the "mood" any. The rides on the other hand were running very well as they usually are for Scarowinds, and with light crowds these were all walkons most of the night.

We got several rides on Borg, including the first night rides for James and myself. It doesn't ride much different at night, but with the theatrical smoke covering everything it certainly looked much cooler than the ride does during the day. All our rides were in front or in row 2, and they were all pretty good. The ride is fairly brutal in the outboard seats and really tosses you around, and is a good bit smoother in the inner seats. Very forceful and fun despite the rattling in spots, and I'm liking this coaster more and more.

Top Gun had no line whatsoever except for the front row all night, and we got several front rides and some in the back as well. The yellow train up front was simply superb, as it was running very fast. It probably wasn't quite the equal of some other Scarowinds rides as it was warmer than usual, but the rides were very good nonetheless.

Thunder Road backwards was standard fare, fun but not much airtime. Of course the C3 rides with a slick track are going to be very hard to beat! Drop Zone was it's usual self, although it was nice that they had lights off on the side facing the park so it wasn't blinding on the way down. Vortex was good as well - ok, maybe we're odd, but we LIKE Vortex. The smoke hung around the entire course of Vortex making it a very different looking ride than usual as you were almost always in the "fog", even if it rode the same.

The surprise ride of the night had to be Hurler - they found the ride we had in 2002 and put it back in the park! I have no idea whether some maintenace on the track and / or trains got done, if it was simply luck or what happened, but the slow, bone-rattling ride we've had much of the past two seasons was nowhere to be seen. I now remember why I loved this ride so much when it's running well. There was not only the great airtime on the usual hills, but it really flew around the turns making those fun instead of a shuffling, screeching pain on the way to the next airtime hill. Since the train didn't lose much speed at all, the 4th hill had better than usual airtime, and there was very good airtime on the 5th hill after the turn under the lift. My butt has barely left the seat in that spot in 2 years but it sure did Friday night. Often the coaster has run fast enough to have decent air on the first few hills and a bit on the 4th after the 2nd turn, but it has consistently slowed down enough to make everything after that hill boring. Friday night though it was fun all the way from the drop to the brakes. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come for Hurler!

Ken B,

Sorry to hear you are disappointed on the parking. However, you must know that Scarowinds is a seperate event from Scarowinds and the Platnium perks just don't work for this event. However, you did recieve a Scarowinds ticket for $16.99. And if you were aware, Bojangles had a partnership with us this weekend and Friday and Saturday night you could buy a Scarowinds ticket and get another in free. So, if you look at it, $16.99 plus $8 for parking is $24.99. Not a bad price for a full night of Scarowinds for two people. Even employees this year have to pay parking when they use their Scarowinds comps.

Also, I'm sorry to hear that Scarowinds wasn't as "scary" as you expected. This year the park is trying to work on a more overall "theme" linking ofcourse to the movies, can you believe that?! But I do understand you would like to see some changes, but like you said you have attending since 2001. However there are many many guest who have never been to Scarowinds and to them, they are feeling the samething you felt in 2001. You have to do whatever works, you know. Also consider this year, only about 103 "scaracters" have been hired so far for this year's event. Far less than expected and have been in the past. On Sunday, Carowinds will be holding another Scarowinds job fair, hoping to add atleast another 20-40 more people to add to the mazes and attractions.

To everyone else,
This year's Scarowinds is def. something to come out and enjoy. Along with many mazes of gost and gouls to shrill your bones, Carowinds is also operating all the major roller coasters, more this year than in years past. Also another interesting fact, Carowinds is the ONLY park Paramount, Six Flags or whatever to keep the scare event running the entire month of October. King's Island and Kind's Dominion are only running Fear Fest mid-October to Halloween. I think Six Flags in Atlanta is doing the samething. Also, Scarowinds is the only one open until midnight!
If any of you think you have any "acting" ability, comeon on out to the job fair tomorrow afternoon (3-6). It doesn't take much and I'm sure you'll have a great time and make some good money. Well, thats it. Have a goodnight and hope everyone makes it to Scarowinds!

I too have been going to Scarowinds since it's conception and every year it has been getting better better.

Thanks for the added tip on parking fees as I was not aware of it but it don't bother me. It would kinda make me sore if I got there not knowing like you did. In the years past I have always taken extra cash as you never know what to expect.

I'll miss Elvira but always welcome change so hopefully I can find some enjoyment in Dracula.

How was the "fog" coverage this year? I love it when the park is so foggy you can hardly see. Plus I hope it gets cold. Halowwen haunts in 80 degrees just don't cut it. Get it down to about 60-65 and I'm a happy ghoul.

I know when I go to Scarowinds I am not there for the coasters, altho they are a plus and I do ride, but I am there actually to enjoy the haunts of the park. Of course I will have my 14 year old Daughter and her 11 year old 1/2 brother so you can almost guarantee some serious screaming and clothes holding going on. That makes it all worth the while.

I plan on at least 2 if not 3 trips to Scarowinds this year. Once Friday the 8th. Once Saturday the 16th and again possibly on the 22nd. Hope to scare you all there sometime.

I have a question...what do they do on a sat when your already parked in the park for the 10-6 hours? do they make you circle around so they can steal 8 dollars from you or do they go around to each car and demand 8 dollars!

Knoing how amusement parks are, they would make you circle around so they could make more money. Security would make you vacate the parking lot, which would be hard to do, so I doubt that they would and hopefully they wont. I've never been to Scarowinds. I'm hoping to go this year though!

^ That would be a difficult and tedious process but I could see them clearing the lot to make you pay. But then that begs the question, what if you aren't a season pass holder and already DID pay to park before 6pm? Would you just show them your stub and stay in the lot or do they clear the entire parking lot regardless and make people that already paid just show their ticket at the toll. Hmmm, interesting.....

Thanks KenB for the heads up.

I will be skipping Scarowinds now, mainly for two reasons.

I think it's a rip-off to do Platinum Pass Holders this way.

Second, I don't like horror movies and don't really enjoy all the Halloween stuff anyway.

Plus most of it sounds like it's your basic haunted houses that I could do for $5 a pop any other place.

I was going to go on ACE night, but I'll pass.

I know, I was on Hurler about 2 months ago, it was running fast, smooth and full of air time! I was so shocked I walked back around for a second ride to make sure I didn't hallucinate. lol

Reading the above posts, I've got mixed feelings about the whole thing to be honest. Some random thoughts...

I've never cared for the additional charge that it costs to get in. But, I'm a sucker for Halloween stuff and always wind up going. Looking at it this way...if I was to go to say 4 haunted houses about 6.00 each, Scarowinds can be a bargain. Nightmare Manor is usually the best one and the one that I look forward to the most. But, I just don't see Scarowinds reaching the heights of say a HHN at Universal.

I just hope the Jason thing isn't too cheesy. I hated the Magic of the Movies thing and hope the Jason thing doesn't have the cheese factor of it. I swear if they advertise the F13 box set that comes out this week at some point during the show, I'll be very annoyed. There's a time and place for advertising but not during a sho like that.

Last year was probably the best one so I'll be interested in seeing what's in store for this year.

The park looks great dressed up for the event and one reason I like to go. I love all the fog effects, etc (and that huge Jack-o-Lantern at the front entrance.)

If they can offer the season pass holders half off admission, why not half off for the Platnium holders since they're not offering free parking for the event? If I was to get to the park and find out that we had to pay for parking, I'd probably be ticked too, especially in light of the past few years and not having to pay at all. I know I can be a cheapskate at times (can't we all...) but something about it doesn't settle with me at all.

So, I can't way to see what goes on Friday night...

If I'm not mistaken it was either the first or second year they held Scarowinds the park was open from 10-6.
Me and my family were there from 10-6 and then bought our Scarowinds tickets from customer service inside the park. They gave us an orange wrist band to wear. That way at 6pm all the non-braclet wearing guests had to leave but we were allowed to stay inside the park.

Do not go to the Jason show then. From what I have been told, the promo in that one is much much worse than the Magic of the Movies. Someone who watched it at Kings Island told me it was basically a 30 minute infomercial on the Friday the 13th set you mentioned.

Okay, according to a customer service person at the park *and* their supervisor, there is NO CHARGE for parking if you have a parking pass. They were going to talk to their manager to confirm that for sure, but it sounds like you almost got ripped off.

Ok again,

Scarowinds is a SEPERATE event but on by an OUTSIDE company Carowinds hired to come in and stage Scarowinds. No one was ripped off by paying to park. That is the policy this year. All pass holders get half-off the general admission for Scarowinds so that is not a bad deal. I mean even for the employees, they are required to use their free ticket issued by human resources if they wish to attend Scarowinds and not working...and yes even they are required to pay the parking fee, if they wish to park at North Gate. If you really want to come to Scarowinds, just take your half-off admission and pay the bitty 8 bucks and park your car! If you are turned away from the event only because of the parking , then just don't come!! Simple as that!

Dude get your panties out of a bunch! People are just voicing their opinions. Im sure the park loves the way you are handling the feedback.
