Yeah, Thursday and yesterday were excellent days to be in the park. Sure, it was understaffed, but I know that the final gate count Thursday was around 4000. That's nobody in the park. No lines. And the free tickets to come back they gave you when you left. You can't beat it.

actually the final gate count for thursday was about 2000 and yesterday was more like 3000

I was just quoting what the Thunder Road operators told me yesterday. My bad.
But yeah, either way, there was nobody in the park.

^ And on that note... lol

In true Jarvis fashion I will begin my trip report of Friday August 26, 2005.

We begin our story finding mild-mannered Wes Connell at home in Charlotte, NC.

Wes being a member of ACE had less than a week before experienced a day of heat at Carowinds like never before. You could say that he is a true "Survivor".

We find our hero arriving on the scene of Paramount's Carowinds around 10:15 in the morning. "Holy Parking Lot's Batman!" Wes says to himself! Unbeknownst to him, the park had had the foresight to close the back entrance to help save on staff.

Wes made his way around the ticket booth and handed over his MI papers (i.e. Season Pass). The happy, perky attendant said "Thank you and have a nice day!"

Where could this happy place actually be? Could it actually be Paramount's Carowinds? We shall soon see...

Ok here we go...

Update #2

All the ACErs have probably figured out this thread by now, but for those that haven't here's what I did.

Friday I took off from work and headed out to the park and arrived about 10:15.

On the way there or whatever, I had remembered there was a thread on Thrill Network where these guys had gone to Cedar Point and tried to ride EVERY ride in the park within a day.

I was by myself since most people were at work/school so I thought I'd just go and have my OWN Amazing rACE! Last Saturday was just too hot for me to feel like participating in the Amazing Race, although I wanted to originally.

So my goal was to hit all the rides (that were open) that I could ride.

First let me say this: Friday was an usual day at the park for sure. It was August, and in the morning it was down right comfortable!

Because of the longer weekly season (by two weeks) this year and the fact that school had gone back on Thursday the park had NO regular staff (teenagers).

So who ran the rides you ask? Why the managers and maintenance folks!

I've never seen this many managers and such in the park before and quite honestly didn't know there were so many!

So as I said earlier the back entrance was closed (due to staffing and the size of the crowd).

First ride after entering (and doing a short survey at the front of the park) was Carolina Skytower. This was basically to confirm what I already thought, the park was EMPTY! I ended up talking with the ride op (a 70 something dude who was really nice) and we chatted going up and down since I was seated next to him.

After leaving Carolina Skytower of course I hit Borg Assmilator. The park only had one train running, and that was all they really needed. I waited 15 minutes or so, and the people behind me (because I had my Borg shirt on) started chatting with me and asking me questions about the park (I should do this for a living). lol

I rode Borg (my 60th ride) and it was fun as always. Yeah it's a Vekoma, but it's still my favorite flyer for reasons of themeing, "smoothness" and the fact that they installed some SWEET magnetic brakes this year! No more slamming into the brakes!

After Borg I headed right (counter-clockwise) around the park. I came to Rip Roarin' Rapids and it was closed (part of staffing issues). Kaleidescope was also closed so on to Vortex!

First off I have to give major kudos to the Carowinds ride maintenace guys. From here on out you will here hardly any problems with the coasters. For the most part all of them are running as good, if not better than they have in years!

Vortex - Not being a big fan of stand-ups I had gotten to the point where I skipped this ride every time I was at the park. Now however, Vortex has been smoothed out and is running great! I'm of the opinion on stand-ups that the shorter the better. Even a B&M. My favorite stand-up is Georgia Scorcher and it is about half the size of Mantis at Cedar Point!

So my personal Amazing Race is going well. I've gotten 1 ride on Borg, 2 or 3 rides on Vortex.

Next I hit Ricochet.

As when I rode this coaster at C3 (Carolina Coaster Classic - ACE Event) this ride was running virtually trimless on the top turns with some insane laterals! Why can't all mice run this good?

That's all for this update... coming up my Amazing Race Continues!

The Wild Thornberry's on-ride of me is worth the wait!

That's going to be interesting.

Hey, since the Techs were operating some of the rides you should have asked about our Hyper Woody for next year. :P

^ Yes and there will be a test at the end! Winner gets a ride with me on Borg...oh wait... er

Update #3

Our story continues with our hero having racked up a few rides already including the (in)famous Borg Assmilator , Vortex and Ricochet as well as one or two flats.

On we go...

Next Wes heads over to the Hurler.

Due to the teens being back in school, the staff was very unusual and much older than I'm used to at Carowinds for sure! The ride op that was next to the que had to be in his late 50's!

Standing in "line" (there wasn't even a wait for front row) I chatted with him and asked him about the maintenance on Hurler. He said he actually worked on Top Gun and 2 others I can't remember. But he said that he thought he heard that Hurler and Thunder Road now were using some type of "hybrid" wood on the top layer and this is probably why the ride has been soooooooo smooth this summer! I must again give major kudos to Carowinds for an awesome job on restoring their wooden coasters as of late. Hurler is still a bit too rough for my taste in the back (especially in the fan turns) but the front is down right awesome! The air time is insane! Saturday (not the day of this TR) the trains were running so fast that on the first hill or two after the first drop the train was flying up the hill and you could hear the upstops literally spinning in mid air below you! If there were no upstops on this coaster Saturday we would have been a new news story!

So needless to say, Hurler is running as good if not better than it's opening year. Amazing at least in the front row. I did try back row once and I needed to see my Dr. afterwards (just kidding). But it is a bit rough back there for my taste.

Next I stopped off at Happy Day's Diner for a quick lunch. The attendants seemed so happy to actually see a customer that they were just unusually friendly today! The DJ was also actually in the booth and I chatted with him for a few minutes and he seemed like a nice guy. He has that whole "Wolfman" sound down for sure! (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go rent American Graffiti) It's a George Lucas film, before Star Wars .

Next up I wanted to ride Drop Zone. Unfortunatley with the staffing the way it was, no DZ crew today. Bummer. I'm actually starting to like this ride a lot more. I still prefer the King's Island and King's Dominion models more, but PC has a fun little one for it's age.

On to Carolina Cyclone...

I'm not a huge fan of Arrow loopers, let me just say that right off the bat. They tend to beat me up a lot because I'm broad in the shoulders and I usually will only ride once for a credit on a "new" coaster for me.

CC was no exception. The restraints are just not built for guys like me that have more muscular arms and shoulders.

That being said, I have to say WOW! CC is still not by any stretch as smooth as say Loch Ness Monster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg (my favorite Arrow looper) but it is was much smoother this year than in many in the past. The first drop when sitting on the back row is simply insane! You get airtime! And to boot you get that weird sensation when your stomach drops really fast and it feels like it just went up and out of your ear or something!

That's all for this update... Coming up Episode II...Attack of the snap!

Can our hero survive an entire day at Carowinds and actually ride every open ride? We shall soon see...

More next time.

I absolutely love that little pop of airtime sitting in the last car on Carolina Cyclone when you plunge down the first drop.

Update # 4 (I promise this one will be shorter). lol

Over to Carolina Goldrusher. Nothing much to say except that those new seat postions really need to be moved up a bit. Hard on people that aren't exactly small back there.

Next up I headed over to Nickelodeon Flying Super Saturator. Also a walk on (which hardly ever happens and tells you how empty the park was).

After two fun-filled and refreshing rides (this ride still freaks me out by how open the car is and how I feel like I'm going to fall out any second!)

Heading on (and passing Water Works which I did not do and did not plan on) I passed White Water Falls.

This ride is being rehabed at the moment and at that time the trench/track was empty and they were working under one of the boats.

On to Scooby Doo's Haunted Mansion.

One of the best places for AC in the park by far! That doesn't mean it's not a fun ride, it is. But I always love that first blast of AC you get on it.

My score...hmmm...let's just say it was better than C3, but still not outstanding ;)

Next up was Dodg'ems (Bumper Cars). Two rides, pretty standard except that before my first ride out of nowhere this mentally challenged guy just hops down in the seat next to me! I was a little disconcerted at first, but he was hillarious. He was like "Hit them! Hit them hard!". lol

Frenzoid was closed - yeah no headache! ;)

Thunder Road Backwards was closed.

Thunder Road Forwards was open... without gushing too much again I must say I am quite impressed with how the park is maintaining their three woodys these days. Thunder Road was running smooth, fast and lots of air time! I was screaming like a little girl and loved it!

Spongebob 3D was closed...

Coming up in Update #5 - Top Gun: The Jet Coaster...can Wes finish his Amazing Race...what is up with white squirrels and Carowinds???

Till next time.

Update #5

So far Wes has done quite well on his Amazing Race. The fact that some rides have been closed has also helped him in his race.

Side note: I did not have a swimsuit with me and I'm not a big water park person so that's why I skipped Water Works...

On to Top Gun - The Jet Coaster!

Memory fails me now how many rides I got, I think it was three. Top Gun was just a tad shy of it's insanity on Saturday the 20th (C3) but I think that had to do with the fact that the 20th was so hot and humid and that it made the coaster even smoother (if that's possible now).

Front row was great as always, back row is just insane these days! This has to be one of the most intense B&M Inverts that I have ridden. If you have not ridden Top Gun in while be sure to check out the back row! You'll know what I'm talking about!

After these past two weeks Top Gun jumped over Dueling Dragons and Raptor to take my #3 Invert (behind Alpengeist (Busch Gardens Williamsburg) and Montu (Busch Gardens Tampa)). Ok enough of that...

On to Nickelodeon Central (which just won 3rd place in the WORLD (Kids area) in the Amusement Today Golden Tickets!!!)

The back section of Nick Central (Little Bill's Cruisers (jr boat ride), TV Land Road Trip (mini cars), Lazy Town Sportcopters (those things you see in RCT) was closed due to staffing)

What else would I go and ride first in Nick Central? Yeah you guessed it... Danny Phantom's Phantom Flyers (formerly Flying Eagles at Paramount's King's Island). I think I rode once to save on time (after all I've gotten my fair share of rides this year). Good snappage and fun had by all... (this is now my favorite flat ride in the park and probably in my Top 5 favorite flat rides in the country!)

On to the Fairly Odd Coaster (AKA the former Scooby Doo's Ghoster Coaster). This ride is always a fun little "kiddie" coaster with a few really good pops of air in the front and back. I think I rode twice.

And as promised...here is the first of two on-ride photos. Go Here (This is my....whootah there's air time ahead! face) or... (Oh crap what did I sit on! face) Anyone notice how much this girl looks like her mother? Kind of freaky and I don't even remember them sitting in front of me!

At the on-ride photo place I stayed a second and chatted with the attendant. She was also very nice and I enjoyed meeting her...

On to Hey Arnold's Taxi Chase (formerly Taxi Jam) I knew the answer but thought I'd ask anyway...and yes I was turned down to ride Taxi Chase kidless. No big loss, I've ridden it before.

At this point I think I realized that I needed to get over to the Paramount Theatre to see the School of Rock Live in Concert! show. I had for several reasons not gotten a chance to see this earlier in the season.

All I can say is WOW! I am not normally a fan of amusement park shows for various reasons, but this one really blew me away. A live band, 70's/80's rock music, cute girls who can blow! I'm there! Outstanding show. I hope to get to catch it again before it shuts down on Sep 18th...

Wes is getting close to the end of his Amazing Race...will he make it?

Tune in next time for the conclusion of Wes' Amazing Race!
