I hope there will some day come a time when Six Flags gets a coaster ready for opening day.

It won't be under the current management. I've been told numerous times from folks at the SF parks that they don't shoot for opening day on new attractions. They think that since Memorial Day is the unofficial kickoff to Summer that that is the date they should shoot for.

I've never understood that logic either. For some of the year round and more southern parks you're running your current season for 2 1/2, maybe 3 months of weeks/weekends without your "New For The Season" attraction.

SFoG is a classic example. They are open for the week during Spring Break (with absolutely nothing new to show mind you) and they can't even get a kiddie land with a bunch of kid flats open for three months after opening day. The only reason one of the areas will be open is because they are just painting buildings and rearranging some ride pads.

Josh got it. I was just coming in to say that Six Flags doesn't shoot for opening but shoots for Menorial Day Weekend. It's why thru always say "coming this spring" or "coming early summer.

Yes and I'm complaining about it.

You'd think at some point they might notice that their competitors perform better than them and are taking a very different approach on things like this.

Oh I agree. If CF can do it obviously it can be done. but I also don't see it as much of an issue fur anyone other than enthusiasts.

Really? So only coaster enthusiasts care about new rides? You don't think there is anyone who a) goes to the park in the spring and is extremely disappointed to find the heavily promoted new ride is still just a construction site or b) doesn't visit the park at all in the spring knowing the new ride isn't ready?

It seems like their thinking is that opening the ride right at the start of peak season will generate maximum hype, but it seems to me that having the ride open a couple months before that could generate more through word of mouth from those who ride it early.

They may very well have the right approach but I just generally assume anytime Six Flags is doing something that goes against the grain it'a completely misguided.

Obviously if it were such a problem then the company would address it. Since they've been reporting the highest customer satisfaction and they just had a decent year, it doesn't seem to be a problem from a business perspective. It's a regional Park chain. I imagine people used to going are used to the new rides not opening till Menorial day, just like you're used to CF opening theirs on opening day. It's far more a first world enthusiast problem kind of thing. I really doubt enough of the general public care.

And as for others outdoing them, you sure about that? 2015 saw CF revenue at $1.24 billion, up 7% from 2014. SF reported a 7% increase over 2014 as well with $1.3 billion

CF had a 4% increase in guests. SF had an 11% increase.

Currently SF stock is at around $51 post recent bankruptcy. Cf shares are $57.

Not too sure CF is doing "better" based on recently released numbers.

Most analysts still rate Cedar Fair stock as a better buy than Six Flags. Both companies and the industry as a whole are doing quite well right now thanks to the end of the recession, but once everything levels out I'm certainly curious to see if Six Flags (or Cedar Fair really) can keep it up. Maybe they really have righted the ship and finally have the right leadership in place (Jim Reid-Anderson just stepped down as CEO, though). I hope so. But you'll have to forgive me for not giving them the benefit of the doubt on business decisions after multiple decades of management gaffes, bad deals, bankruptcy protection filings, and shareholder revolts.

According to my investment tools, they are both relatively equal as far as Wall Street is concerned although they are showing Cedar Fair as bearish, I think because the numbers from Q4 weren't what investors were looking for.

I keep a pretty close eye on both of them, although we don't own any Six Flags stock. The reason is that while my wife lets me handle all of it, we discuss any purchase before I make it. Our experiences at most Six Flags parks have been so poor that we're not willing to risk any of our money on them. I will note, though, that in my personal portfolio (not retirement), Cedar Fair is far outperforming any other stock that I hold (which includes Disney, etc).
