Went out today to check out Charlotte's new light rail. Not a coaster, but hey, it has rails and trains, so it's as close as I'm going to get around here for awhile.

It was like waiting for BORG with one train operation on a busy concert day. I was shocked at how many people were riding this thing. Yeah, it's new, and it was free, but still I didn't expect this.

I had a feeling the uptown station would be swamped, and thought the I-485 one might be hard to get in and out of with the shopping center traffic, so thought I'd find a spot somewhere in the middle of the line. Went to the Woodlawn station (actually on Old Pineville Rd.) and thought it wasn't too bad - there were a decent number of parking spots available.

There were probably 50-75 people at the platform, most wanting to head uptown. I thought it might be easier to get on going South, but watched 3 trains come by really full, so bailed and headed south.

The 485 lot apparently was full, so I headed up to the next one - Sharon Road West. Parking lot mostly full, but "only" about 50 people waiting to board. I had hoped being one stop from the end of the line there'd be SOME room on this one. There was - standing room only.

Rode the thing to the end of the line at 7th street. The trains got completely full by then, with few people getting off at the intermediate stops. The trains have a cab at both ends, so they don't have to turn them around. I thought they'd have some sort of staging area or something, but the line just ends and they have you unload - then load the people waiting to board. I assume they switch you over to the righthand track past the station.

The line to board the thing going southbound was wrapped around the building / parking deck there as far as I could see. Luckily, CATS planned ahead (amazingly) and had buses set up to take people back to the stations if they didn't want to wait to get back on the train. Since I figure I can ride this thing some other time for a few bucks, I took advantage of this and headed back South. Took a bit longer than the train did - but getting on the train for a return trip looked to be a multi-hour wait.

Didn't get any pictures aside from some Norfolk Southern locomotives on the track near the Woodlawn station - didn't feel like lugging the camera around and figured with the crowds it'd be too hard to get any pictures.

I'm assuming this was just a combination of opening day jitters and attendance an order of magnitude higher than what Lynx will carry on a regular day. Hopefully with less people riding it'll be much smoother. I'll hold judgement until then, but I liked what I saw all things considered. Could be very useful for Bobcats and Panthers games - there's a station very close to the Jillians off S. Tryon where my friends and I often meet before a Bobcats game.

OK that's too funny. I was there too!

That would have been weird to see you on one of the trains or the stations.

It was insanely busy, but when you say "free" in Charlotte, everybody and their brother shows up.

I also noticed the rail yard (when was the last time Charlotte had one of those!) about half way down South Blvd. Of course I had put up my camera and couldn't get a shot. But all the trolleys were out there, or the new ones at least.

Those trains reminds me when I was stationed in Germany and used the Straus en Baun to go all over the place. I had fond memories of traveling from Mannhiem to Heidelberger in a snowstorm one year. Glad to see that it seems to be working in the Queen City.

I waited for about an hour at the Bland St station but every train that came in was packed to the gills. So, I just decided to wait and ride it when all the excitement wears off this week. I have a free 3 day pass they sent me in the mail and plan to use it for the remaining Panther games.

It was really funny that every time a train would come from the south, everyone would run to the other side of the platform only to be turned away. Then when a train would come from the north, everyone would run over to the other side of the platform. It was pretty comical.

Looks pretty much identical to the Minneapolis light rail line even down to the design of the signs and the fonts. And wow, it's almost like Charlotte is a real city now. With the arena, this, and other recent downtown developments, I'm almost jealous of the place. Sadly it's still a cultural wasteland and I have no interest in living there long term, but the future definitely looks pretty good.

I put together a little video from some of the footage I took on the trains if anyone is interested.

Probably the only rail junkie on here is Dukie. lol

And yeah Jonathan, I kinda agree with you. I really hope our "music scene" can get it together one of these days, but Raleigh has the advantage of being a college town and that helps a lot.

I'm surprised that 3 of us showed up for this. I honestly thought that not that many people would really care after all the fuss that was made over the thing.

The observer is reporting they had 101,000 riders over the past 2 days. Wow.

They seem to even have a few riders today now that we have to pay. :D

Now I wish I lived in Charlotte! A dollar and 30 cents isn't too steep when you figure a trip from High Point to Charlotte would be 13 on Amtrak. RollerNut loves train almost as much as he loves roller coaster. I am currenting designing a 3'x8' model railroad layout.

Yeah, and when you consider that parking at a Panthers game or Bobcats game is $10 and up...$1.30 sounds pretty good.

Parking downtown on a monthly basis runs $120 on up now.

You see why I take the "express" bus.

I didn't go during the day, took the family out about 7:30 to ride. Got on at 485, plenty of parking then. Rode into town, not very crowded at all. Got off at the Arena, walked around the block, then back to the Arena Station. Had to wait about 15-20 min for the return train to Pineville. Saw a guy and his wife I used to bowl with. Funny. The train going back was crowded, I stood all the way to Pineville. Pretty cool, could come in real handy for events downtown for sure.

I actually had a reason to ride Lynx today for work and surprisingly even at 7:05AM the train was pretty full. Most of the seats were taken and there were some people standing. Mine was only a single train though, and not a double.

Just got a press release from CATS:

Charlotte, N.C., November 28, 2007-The first two days of LYNX Blue Line ridership started strong with 6,691 commuters using the service on Monday and ridership of 8,029 for Tuesday.  “We are on our way to meeting and perhaps exceeding our projection of an average of 9,100 daily riders over the first year of light rail operations,” said Ron Tober, CATS’ Chief Executive Officer.

CATS opened the LYNX Blue Line this past weekend and experienced an outstanding start to light rail service in the South Corridor. The free introductory service on Saturday and Sunday brought out 106,000 riders.  The Saturday and Sunday numbers are estimates based upon sample counts made manually along the LYNX Blue Line. Staff estimates that between 1,200 and 1,500 people rode LYNX to and from the Bobcats – Celtics game Saturday evening and between 4,000 and 5,000 people rode light rail to and from the Panthers game on Sunday.

The Monday and Tuesday numbers are actual manual counts made from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with estimates of evening ridership based upon observations added to the total.

Ridership for the LYNX Blue Line will be reported on a monthly basis along with regular CATS’ ridership report.

My gosh. These 1 train operations are gonna be trouble! Where's Paramount when you need them!

I go to McKoy's for lunch every now and then. Their patio is just a few feet from where the train crosses over Woodlawn. It's fun to watch them fly by. The trains going at a pretty good clip at that point but sometimes we would see double trains, and sometimes single trains. On opening day (free day) they all had doubles.

At least they have the option of single or double. Not sure if they can triple.

BTW, I'm thinking about taking Lynx for my first trip Friday night to meet some friends at Jillian's. I mean, how convenient that the Bland St Station is right in front of that place. And living about a mile from the I-485 station helps too.

:P

Maybe it's just me, but South Blvd and all those little sidestreets seem much weirder now because of all the crossing arms and configuarations for the new crossings.

You can also feel it's a bit bumpy when the train actually goes through the middle of South Blvd down near the "big cookies".

Once you leave the downtown/South End stops they really pick up a good bit of speed.

I was driving up to Arrowood and I couldn't even catch the train, he was going way faster than me. lol

From the disturber I mean observer...

LOL

Sure, the opening of the Lynx Blue Line drew 100,000 people over two days. But just think if CATS had served opossum.

When the N.C. Railroad opened service from Charlotte to Salisbury on Jan. 4, 1855, folks in Salisbury held a celebratory barbecue where they devoured "24 hogs, 16 sheep, 6 beeves, 10 opossums, and 1,400 pounds of bread." That's according to the book "North Carolina Railroad 1849-1871, the Modernization of North Carolina," as cited recently on the blog of Gerry Cohen, director of bill drafting for the General Assembly in Raleigh.

Can't you just picture Mayor Pat McCrory serving up some opossum sandwiches?

And in case you didn't know, "beeves" is shorthand for beef cattle.

Are there alot of Trains that run along the stretch or do they just wait for a train to come back? I don't know. How do they run them?
