Renowned escape artist Dean Gunnarson is back in Manitoba recovering from an injury he sustained during a performance in China on Tuesday.
Gunnarson, who lives in the Riding Mountain area, injured his right foot Tuesday when it was clipped by a roller-coaster car that was zooming down tracks where he had been chained and handcuffed.
Gunnarson had freed himself and was diving to safety when the car caught his foot.
“It’s sore. There’s internal bleeding and it’s swelling and it’s causing me a great deal of pain. It just hurts like heck,†Gunnarson said Thursday.
He arrived home from China late Wednesday night.
Gunnarson, who was shooting the escape in Beijing as part of a Chinese TV special, said he doesn’t believe anything necessarily went wrong, the car just clipped him as he was diving to safety.
“It was a fast roller-coaster,†he said. Although the injury is a painful one, it’s far from his worst.
“I’ve broken every bone in my body at one time or another,†he said, noting he even “died†and had to be revived during a 1983 escape attempt from a coffin that was submerged in the Red River.
Still, being hit by a roller-coaster car travelling nearly 100 km/h is no fun.
“It’s like standing on a highway and sticking out your hand and having a car go by and hit it,†he said.
This fall, Gunnarson is planning an escape where he will be locked inside a steel coffin and buried six feet underground for 48 hours. After two days, he will attempt to escape on Halloween.
The location for the escape has not been determined, but Gunnarson said he hopes to do it in Winnipeg.
