General Carowinds discussion

This topic was brought about by the ride safety laws, but I thought it would be interesting to expand on this topic.

For instance...

Do Carowinds employees get paid with North or South Carolina taxes on their checks? or both depending on what rides you are working at the time?

Which side of the park is cheaper to buy food and souvenirs?

Are the taxes on tickets cheaper at one entrance over the other?

Since you have to be different ages to work rides in the two states are their two different Carowinds employment groups to keep them seperated?

Surely there are lots of interesting points of discussion and questions that deal with the unique location of the park. Here's the place to ask them and hopefully get them answered. Some that aren't necessarily Carowinds specific, like...

If a guy has a heart attack, dies, and lands over the state line (head and arms on South Carolina, legs on North Carolina) where is he declared dead... North Carolina since he had the heart attack there, South Carolina since his heart is there, or just Carowinds in General?

The state you live in makes a lot of sense.

So does it depend on the state you live in as to what rides you can operate based on age?

^ No, that depends on where the ride is located in the park. This is from 2 years ago, so Carowindsman can probably give you more up to date information, but then you could work any ride on the South Carolina side if you were 16 and any ride on the North Carolina side if you were 18. The exception was Top Gun, which is on the South Carolina side, but the park had its own rule that you need to be 18 to work it.

Don't you pay taxes for both states no matter what side you are on? Actually, sales tax is higher in NC as far as I know, they still have .06 on each dollar, where we have .08 on each dollar.

Your talking sales tax. They're talking income tax. As said before your income tax depends on your state of residency.

Also remember Paramounts Carowinds address is listed as Charlotte, NC. So I would think a lot of the issues that would be raised would fall back on Carowinds street address.

Carowinds’ unique position on the state line has almost brought quite a bit of hassle, but is usually kept behind the scenes.
A few other examples include,
In SC, park security are consider deputized officers and can technically make arrests, while in NC, they can only detain.
-All money received in the park must remain in the state in which is was received.
-All food must be stored and served in the same state (health dept regs)
-Of course, rides are inspected in their respective state based on the position of the main operators control panel (MOC).
-As mentioned, in NC to operate amusement devices (considered heavy machinery) you must be 18, while in SC 16- though in recent years the park has made a valiant attempt to place as many 18 year olds in SC. (Also look for that SC regulation to change to 18 soon)
-Phone calls must be monitored as to which state could be a long distance call… thought the in-park system doesn’t matter, it is a long distance call to call SC from the park offices.
- And don’t forget where you can and can’t purchase your beer on a Sunday!

To answer your final question, and like those of it, during my tenure at the park, Carowinds does a good job of not making the state line a large issue. The park is operated of North Carolina, and pretty much defaults to that, or the stricter rule, during any confusion. In many cases, it truly is “Carowinds”.

Sales Tax in Meck County (NC) is 7.5%

I don't know what the York County rate is, but it's got to be cheaper than that.

Meck County's sales tax is outrageous.

Then NC adds another 2% on for food tax too!

I seem to remember a Coke costing less in SC vs. NC on a visit, but I wasn't sure.

^I woulden't be suprised, in north carolina a normal 20 ounce bottle of soda costs $1.17-$1-25.

But one gas station up here sells 20 ounce bottles of this one brand for 69 cents!!! great soda too, it dosen't have all of that sugar and carbs because they use splenda.

N.C. taxes alot on other stuff to.
