Twice that I've driven over to the park this year and the gates have been closed and the park shut down when it was supposed to be open. I'm assuming it was because it was raining. Does this happen often?

I have been at the park when it has rained then cleared up. The park stayed open, even though it seemed that everybody left during the rain. Later when it was clear, I'm sure there were less than 2000 peeps in the park because I was the only person in Wayne's World.

Jonathan, you have had some bad luck here with rain & parks. At least Dollywood didn't close though.

Normally the park will open in the rain as long as there is no lightning & thunder. The morning rains in this area were torrential in Pineville (where I live) lasting from the early am until mid-afternoon.

Try tomorrow afternoon. They are saying cloudy, but dry....
call first!

They won't close on Sunday. It's supposed to be nearly 90 degrees.
Quite a welcome change from this miserable cold rain.

There is no magic number on how many people have to be in the park before it closes, but the 1,500- 2,000 is usually a good estimate. It is a call made by the "officer of the day" (102), usually in conjunction with upper management from key departments, who are always eyeing data. With this season being the longest on record (see post: Longest Operating Calendar-Thanks to... Jan 10, 2005) there's probably less hesitation to cut the losses and try for a better day. During my tenure, early closures occurred no more than about 4 times per season.
