Paramount has got the rights to the Smurfs back, now if only the island was still there.

Cool! I loved the smurfs and still watch them on Boomerang.

Maybe the Smurfs will run off the Borg at PC and run off the Volcano at PKD and reclaim their mountain. lol

Here's what all the fuss is about...

Paramount has acquired film rights to vintage cartoon characters "The Smurfs" and is setting up development of a 3-D CGI feature with Nickelodeon Movies reports Variety.

Producers have conceived the project as a trilogy (One isn't enough?) and are aiming to release the first film in 2008 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Smurfs (That's 50 years too long.) The blue skinned critters originated in 1958 as a Belgian comic strip but hit international fame in the form of a 1981 animated series that ran for a whopping 256 episodes (That's 255 episodes too long. And some really good series can't stay on a year!)

The studio has selected Herb Ratner ("Mr. Lucky," "Clean Break") to script (Never heard of those movies. The poor guy must be starving for work), whilst the storyline is being kept under wraps (I'm really dying to know about the spoilers for this one folks.)

And on a lighter note...the Devil's Rejects opens Friday.

^ You call that a lighter note?

I'd rather see Barney Returns 100x than watch a Rob Zombie movie. lol

I wonder if that means we should expect something smurf themed in 2008.

^I doubt it, considering the Smurfs went out of style around 15 years ago...

I don't think a movie will bring them back. It didn't work for Rocky and Bullwinkle, Garfield, or the Muppets etc, so I wouldn't really expect the Smurfs and all there Smurfiness to suddenly be a huge craze like it was way back when. ;)

Did anyone see "The Smurfette Show" on Saturday Night Live a few years ago? Great rip on Anna Nichole Smith...

Papa Smurf: "Smurfette, you mean "Papa Smurf, my Smurf hurts!"

No i missed that.

You have to somewhat think that Paramount thinks this will be huge if they are already planning to make 3.

I'll bet we see something smurf at carowinds in 2008 or later, even it it's just the them walking around and no rides.

^ But Paramount tends to have eyes bigger than their stomach sometimes.

When Wayne's World was such a surprise hit they planned 2 sequels.

Well WW2 was a flop and they ended up canceling the 3rd one.

The only thing smurf is probably gonna be soem kid size stuff animal you can win at the park. I highly doubt the park pre plan on something that shakey. The only other park chain I know that has done that is universal and they did that with their jurassic park river adventure ride in hollywood...

The smurfs are nowhere on that level...so if they will be walking around it would probably be you w/ blue face paint because thats the closest a smurf is getting in those gates...
