General Carowinds discussion

I got to the park today around 4:30 and then an announcement was made over the loudspeakers that Carowinds would be closing at 6:00 today due to weather. I rode some rides and stayed on most of them because there were no lines. I leave the park, head to my truck parked at the south gate around 10 minutes til 6. I decided to get my camera out since it had stopped raining and snap a few photos of the last few runs of Top Gun and Thunder Road.

After that, I decided to ride down to the end of the parking lot and take a few pictures of the coasters from a different angle. I'm putting my camera up and getting back in my truck when two Carowinds Security cars pull up and box me in.
One officer gets out of his car and asks me what I'm doing down here. I tell him I'm snapping a few shots of the coasters. He then asks me why. I tell him that I'm a coaster enthusiast and like to have some pictures of the coasters. The officer tells me that it looks suspicious that I'm all the way at the end of the parking lot taking pictures of a coaster, and that I'm not doing anything wrong, but after the
events of 9/11 the park can't ever be too careful.

He walks over to the other car, leaving his door open, and starts talking to the other officer. I can hear everything they are saying over the radio from the car since his door was left open. They tell the dispatch the make, model and color of my truck, and that I'm talking some photos of Thunder Road, yadda yadda yadda.

After about 5 minutes of this, both officers come back over and ask to see the pictures. I get my digital camera back out and show them the pictures. Satisfied, the officer thanks me for cooperating and lets me get back in my truck and be on my way. I thank them both for doing their job and that I feel safer at the park because of their presence.

Now that leads me to this. When I first got down to the other end of the lot, a pickup inside the park drove past Thunder Road on a maintenance road heading toward the South Gate. Did they radio the dispatch and tell them to check it out, or does the park have security cameras looking over the parking lots?

Have any of you had similar incidents with Carowinds Security?

I'm sure someone called.

Nice to see security on top of things.

Yes, there are security cameras all over the parking lot.

lol... thinking that someone might think to bomb carowinds reminds me of something i saw on the news ticker of CNN on Sept. 11

" WDW parks closed, Citibank NY closed, Wall Street closed.... Juneau's Alaska State courthouse closed"

i understand that they want to protect from inpark violence.. but honestly, a terrorist attack??? seems far-fetched to me...

better safe then sorry though..

yea, glad to see they care about our safety...but i'd hate to break it to them, but carowinds isnt well known enough to be blown up :P

Yeah. I don't mind high security. So I won't blow up even though carowinds is less likely than six flags parks. But you never know.

I know a lot of people here probably disagree with me, but I think that is absurd, and I would have complained. Security is a necessary thing, but I shouldn't feel like I'm in a police state when I go to an amusement park.

They should have just called you a nerd for bringing a camera to the park. ;)

I actually had a frighteningly horrible run-in with security a few weeks ago at Carowinds.

My friend Nick and myself were leaving the park, when he decided to take a picture of the funny sticker on the back of someone's car. Standing beside the car next to the one he was photographing, were 3 small children, and their mother was nearby. After Nick took the picture, the woman runs up, and punches him in the face thinking that he has photographed her children (how a simple photograph of 3 fully-clothed children around age 12 is reason for a punch in the face is beyond me). Nick and I run to the nearby security car, and explain the situation, while this psycho woman with a named pronounced "Nee-see" chases after us yelling "perverts! child molestors!" Immediately after we explain the story to the security guard, the security guard does the unthinkable and places my bleeding friend Nick in the back of his police cruiser in HANDCUFFS while the psycho woman is attempting to attack him.

After the ordeal was over and the police reports were filed (Nick pressed assault charges), my friend was released with no apology, yet the woman had left about 30 minutes prior, without even a warning. Next time the psycho gets pulled over she will be taken into custody immediately, but she still should have been taken in by the security guards. My friends nearly broken nose and bloody t-shirt obviously weren't enough to prove that the woman had been violent, yet a search (and seizure) of his $100 memory stick were enough to prove that he hadn't even taken a picture of the kids.

As if the situation couldn't have gotten any worse, the head of security at Carowinds came out and handed us both life-ejection forms to the park. After explaining that I had no involvement, she ripped up mine, but Nick was forced to sign the form and agree that he would never enter any Paramount park again. W...T....F! Warning to all people on this board, don't get viciously assaulted at Carowinds or you will never be permitted to attend any Paramount property again!

The entire situation was disgusting, and really made me wonder how incompetent some of the rent-a-cops at the park are.

What a terrible experience! I feel for you. You did nothing wrong. Did you offer to show them (security guard and mother) the pictures before they confiscated the memory card to clear yourself of wrongdoing?

Is there a way for you to clear yourself and be able to re-enter the park?

They should have just called you a nerd for bringing a camera to the park.

I didn't take the camera into the park. I took the pictures outside the park after enjoying myself inside the park.

Maybe someone should just decide to park down there at the end of the parking lot past the south gate and walk a long way to enter the park. I wonder if security would ride down there and ask you why you are parking so far away. "I don't want anyone parking close to my car. And I enjoy walking."

The nerd comment was a reference to <a href='http://www.carowindsconnection.com/community/index.php?showtopic=1008&view=findpost&p=12866' target='_blank'>this</a>. :)

And RollrCoastrCrazy, that's horrible. I would definitely write a letter to the park explaining everything that happened.

Oh, I see. I don't see anything wrong with taking a camera to the park. Call me a nerd, but you have to use your nice camera every once in a while :D
