That is very true on T-Road, no one was hurt, and with Scooby. My area coord. this year was a team leader on the Vortex in 97 and she told me that it was like a Sunday afternoon and the brakes failed at the back of Vortex. She said they were loading train 1 and all she saw was 2 coming through all the brakes. They did collide in the station and a few people in the last row of 1 and first of 2 were hurt--some neck injuries. I told her I was surprised there were more-boys you know what I mean if you have ridden Vortex. I was on the crew there my first year at PC and it was fun. Vortex runs just like Top Gun, fun to play with. Anyway that was another mishap at PC.

Anybody remember seeing a pic of an old lady (doing her knitting) and a hillbilly type character riding in the front seat of Thunder Road (right side)? Supposedly there was this old lady who rode it no problem (and did her knitting) while the hillbilly got sick? I saw a picture and had it for a long time. It was probably a publicity stunt for the coaster at the time. But, it was pretty funny to hear about.

Heard the one about the river boat returning next year yet!!!

It IS! Rip Roarin Rapids has been named Rip Roarin' Riverboat, and guests will now plow the rapids aboard the S.S. Carolina! Might have to add some life boats though...

The most interesting part is where the boat will actually capsize. 4 out of every 5 guests can expect not to make it off alive.

In 1982, during the inaugural year of Rip Roarin Rapids, the ride was closed the bulk of the season. Here's why:
Initially, Carowinds honcho Al Weber had them construct the ride themselves to save money. The initial ride didn't have obvious walls and was far more free floating. At The part the goes to the edge of the waterfall, there was no visible rail, it was concealed under the water. On a hot July day, they were pushing guests through as fast as possible. One of the boats did go down the rapids with no guests and when it reached the waterfall, I guess due to a swell and lack of weight, the raft went over the waterfall. This caused people in the boats behind it to jump out, getting their feet caught in the logs on the ground that made the rapids. Overall, several dozen people went to the hospital and the raft ride was closed the rest of the year. By the time it reopened in 83, it was completely rewalled and has pretty much been that way since. Next time I'll tell you guys about the sniper in the parking lot and the bomb threat on the skytower. True stories while I worked there in management!

And about Rip Roarin Rapids, did it also open with a special kind of rafts during the opening season? I had heard somewhere that it opened with a new type of low-sided raft, but for the ride's second season after the incident you mentioned, it gained normal 6-Seater Hopkins rafts.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Drop Zone getting stuck at the top. It was not all of the cars just one. They had to bring a firetruck with a ladder to get the people down. For a while, people would not ride the car that got stuck until they forgot about it.

The funny thing is that I had a friend who claimed to get stuck upside on the Frenzoid for a couple hours, stuck upside on WL, and get stuck on the Drop Zone in that infamous incident. The really funny thing is that he was with me that night I don't think the people were up there that long. Maybe a couple hours at most.

Brian...the damage to the riverboat apparently happened while they were moving to its "final destination" behind Reptar. They decided to make kindling of it after much debate over its future. The park had every intention of keeping it in the park but some things weren't meant to be.

My friend said he was stuck upside on the Frenzoid and got stuck in the loop on White Lightnin'.
