I know some people dont like The Beast as #1 on their list b/c they think it's overrated...but #64?? For me, it's a top 5, but we all have our own opinions, so it's cool. Just out of curiosity though, what do you not like about it that ranks it low?

^I know you weren't asking me that question but I can give you my reason that the Beast ranks so low on my list. In short, the Beast has been tamed. It is not the monster that it was in the late 70's into the 80's.

Frankly, there are too many trim brakes. I mean just look at the first drop. The entire length is one long skid brake. Then the long tunneled straightaway that follows is another long skid brake. I believe there is another after the tunnel before the 2nd lift too. Then, there is the drop after the 2nd lift. Again, a loooong skid brake that leads all the way to the helix.

The Beast was also very rough when I rode it last time in 2001. I wasn't even on a wheel seat either.
It is probably the most over-rated wooden coaster on the planet. Most people that rank it so high, just simply haven't ridden enough wooden coasters to realize there are so many more better woodies out there. Longer is NOT always better! :o

I've also noticed that many of the people that rank the Beast #1 (or close) tend to be between ages 9 and 15. A fragile age when one is somewhat naive and tempted to believe everything they see and hear on Discovery Channel. They tend to be the sheep following the herd....

I'm not knocking anyone who ranks the Beast high on their list. It can be a really fun ride at night. I also remember my very first ride in 1988 before it had been tamed to death. I absolutely loved it then.

If PKI ever decides to get a new woodie, my recommendation would be to simply overhaul this monster and find a way to run it wide open like it was originally designed to do. It would be like a new coaster and I guarantee people would flock to the park by the thousands to try it out.

My Personal Top 10 North American woodies:
Hades
Thunderhead
Tremors
Avalanche
Phoenix
Comet~Great Escape
Coney Cyclone
Coaster~Vancouver
Boulderdash
Lightning Racer

I ranked the Beast 61 out of 62, because quite frankly, it is running like utter crap. The new magnetic brakes are even worse than the skid brakes, but when I rode it in June, I was almost happy the brakes were there to slow it down, because it was beating the heck out of me.

Well, out of the 24 woodies i've been on or so, it ranks at about #4 or 5 for me because i just enjoy it. I love the way it weaves through the terrain, the tunnels, the length, the out of control feeling, and the final double helix. I'll admit, it is runny pretty rough at times and the trim breaks cake away from the ride, but i still enjoy it. I dont rank it high because i think it's "kool" or what everyone else likes, i just happen to like it a lot for whatever reason. Plus, one night i had the ultimate ride...going up the lift hill, the fireworks started up, it was cool out, so the coaster was running very smooth and fast, at night, it's hard to beat a ride through the woods on the beast. Going up the second lift hill, another great showing of the fireworks, then the helix. Coming out of the tunnel from the helix for the turn to the station was the fireworks finale. It was awesome, riding the beast and the fireworks going, so waiting in the brake run we saw the rest of the finale of the fireworks. It was awesome!! But anyway, back to the matter at hand. Honestly, the beast would probably be farther back in my woodie ratings except that i havent had a chance to ride many of the top wooden coasters...the raven, legend, hades, boulderdash, tremors, cyclone

Mine would probably be something like this:
Thunderhead
Phoenix
Lightning Racer
Grizzly@PKD
Beast

besides those i haven't been on any really big name coasters i dont think.

Thanks for your responses though swampfox43 and Jonathan!

Yeah to pretty much echo these guys statements, when I rode it in June it was rough, slow, and boring. It was my favorite woodie for quite a while after some night rides I had in 2002. Heck if you look at my ballot from last year it was #4 and in 2003 it was #1. But its consistant deterioration in addition to me riding some of the higher ranked woodies lead to its downfall in my opinion.

My Top 5:

GhostRider Knott's Berry Farm
Comet Great Escape
Gwazi-Tiger Busch Gardens-Tampa
Gwazi-Lion Busch Gardens-Tampa
Viper SFGAm

Beast was 6 because it was awesome when I rode it in 2000, and I'm voting on personal experience, not anything that I've read online recently.

Cephas brings up a great point in voting on personal experience and not what you have heard about that sorry excuse of a woodie that is called the Beast at PKI. Thanks for contributing to this thread Cephas.

well, beast ranks higher for me because i had a great few experiences on it that outweighed the roughness at times. I dont care what the GP thinks, just what i think (part of the reason coasters like the Hulk are among my favorites still), and i just happened to have good rides when i went on it. And like i said, when i've only been on a few of the other top woodies, it doesnt have much competition (especially considering i've been on some horrible ones like Hercules)

Gee Jarvis...you put the Hurticane on there but neglected the Swamp Fox! Did you get hit in the head by your tripod on Top Gun last weekend? LOL

Max
who'd put Legend, Raven, Phoenix, Swampie, and Silver Comet on the list...
