Haliwa-Saponi tribe plans amusement park in northeastern N.C.

HOLLISTER, N.C. - The Haliwa-Saponi tribe plans to build a Native American-themed amusement park just south of Roanoke Rapids, the tribe's chief said.

The tribe contracted B&R Associates to develop a preliminary design and a rendering of the proposed park, Chief Ronnie Richardson told the Daily Herald of Roanoke Rapids.

The proposed site is 118 acres near Interstate 95, Tribal Administrator Archie Lynch said. The site would be developed in two phases, with the first phase costing an estimated $30 million.

Tribal administrators plan to seek $1 million from the state General Assembly to help pay design, marketing and promotion costs. The tribe has already received $100,000 from the Golden Leaf Foundation and $250,000 from HUD's Rural
Housing and Economic Development program to help develop the project.

The park will also help educate visitors about the history and culture of American Indians, according to a proposal submitted to the Golden Leaf Foundation.

The park would be located near the planned 750-acre Carolina Crossroads Music and Entertainment District. Randy Parton, the brother of singer Dolly Parton, broke ground last month on a theater near Roanoke Rapids that would be the cornerstone of the district that seeks to rival Branson, Mo., and Gatlinburg, Tenn., as a hub of country, pop, beach and gospel music.

Richardson said he and Randy Parton have already discussed the amusement park proposal.

"Parton sees how the two can mesh together," Richardson said.

Roanoke Rapids is currently trying to redevelop itself as a tourist destination, with Randy Parton as one of the driving forces. I thought this would eventually be the site of the rumored Dollywood II, but looks like this park may get to the area first.

Hey, I'm all for two parks like Branson has. lol

I hope this happens. It really seems strange that the south has not caught up with the rest of the East coast in terms of parks and such.

Look at PA and all the parks up there. It's just insane.

And no I'm not counting Florida. They are a country to themselves. lol

I didn't know that a town was called Hollister, NC. Hollister is my favorite store!

Anyway, back on topic.

Another park, sounds nice. I can't wait for the area that they are building up there to be finished, and the park will compliment the enterainment discrict.

Have to see how this turns out.
