In short, Pigeon Forge has approved Dollywood's proposal to begin construction on a 121 foot tall coaster for 2007. The ride will be announced officially in July, and ground should be broken in April.

Updated July 7th

I can't wait to ride this thing.

It made it sound like the drop could be bigger than 121ft... maybe Dollywood's first hyper??? ;)

The project must be huge if they are starting so early.

A little birdie said they might be XCoaster trains or Eurofighters. Can't remember which it was.

yes for a new coaster...you can bet on some awesome theming! but you have to wonder how fast and what the actual drop will be because you know how dollywood builds rides on hills and gorges!

Yea, that's part of what makes them so cool. Dollywood has come such a long way in just a few years. It has so many more rides now that when i first went about 4 years ago, maybe it's 5 now. The park has just such a great atmosphere alone, and everything isn't crammed in...the theming is great from what i've seen. It's quickly becoming a big name park, i hope to visit it after they get this new attraction next year. Plus, Thunderhead is a masterpiece IMHO lol I forget where i saw the rumor about it, but i heard something about a vertical drop into a mine shaft, so I imagine it will be a pretty decent drop. Carowinds, take notes...

The Pigeon Forge Planning Commission approved plans for a mysterious new ride at Dollywood on Tuesday. Commission members voted unanimously to approve the site plan for the Mystery Mine Ride, which architect Bruce Rutherford described as the largest expansion that Dollywood has undertaken. The Mystery Mine features a track that climbs 121 feet and sends passengers plunging over a simulated broken trestle.

<a href='http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y31/holtskee/DWDrop.jpg' target='_blank'>Here</a> is a larger version of the concept artwork from above. The ride appeared in one of the park's online surveys from few months ago.

I'm very excited about the coaster. Screamscape says the theming is being done by a company from Florida that frequently works with Disney and Universal.

That's a cool looking ride. It kind of looks like a spin-off of the Adams Family house.
Ok, So I'll definantly be going to Dollywood next year. It's one of the few parks I've yet to visit.

September 23rd. That's the Saturday after C3. That is the date of Ride World's Night of Thunder event. I highly recommend it.

Several mental notes were taken today at SFOG about Goliath. Maybe the little birdies can plant some ideas about a hyper at the park :)

Now, that I think about it, I think the 23rd is the last operating day of the Pavilion.

Max,
While many of us are sad about the closing of the Pavilion, we can happily celebrate Swamp Fox's 40th anniversary in June. Have you considered some sort of enthusiasts gathering at Family Kingdom yet? Forty years is a long time for anything to be around in MB these days.

Dollywood has a new web page to promote the ride:

<a href='http://www.dollywood.com/mmine/default.htm' target='_blank'>Tennessee's Mystery Mine</a>

The website will feature a new video every Friday that will explain the story behind the attraction, apparently culminating with the official announcement on July 7th. Look for more information in the coming weeks.
