I find it interesting after all these CP fanboys talk about Raptor and all the other inverts out there that our very own Top Gun is still the #1 ranked US invert on coasterfanatics.com: http://www.coasterfanatics.com/sec_coasters/top25_steel.asp

I feel the need...

It's pretty high up there on that site; must be a lot of Carowinds fanboys. I like Raptor a tad better myself. With the mid-course brake run turned off, that is. :)

Yea, Raptor edges it out, but Alpengiest takes it IMHO.

Raptor though has got two very severe problems. One is the transition into the MCBR.

The other is the transition into the final brakes.

If it weren't for those two things I would probably say I agreed.

The helix though on Raptor kicks anythingelse I've ever been on. Talk about G's!

^Only the transition into the final brakes bothered me. Roughest moment on any B&M. (Besides like all of Iron Wolf)

I had an MCBR-less Raptor ride, and still rank the Gun and Silver Bullet (weird, huh?) both above the Bird.

TG and Raptor are neck and neck, with TG edging out #1 on my invert rankings - and #2 on my overall steel behind Kumba. Raptor is #3 overall.

Ones I'd LIKE to get a brakeless run on are Montu and Alpengeist. Montu was very bleh my first rides in 2001, but was VERY good last year. Still, the mid-course really sapped a lot from the finish. TG still to me has the better Batwing, and I like how TG and Raptor are spread out over midways rather than out in a field like Montu.

Alpengeist is pretty much last on my invert list - I've had some decent rides on it, but the transition to the midcourse on that one seems FAR worse to me than Raptor's, it's had a tendency to be rough on many of my rides, and the ending is just extremely weak due to the near-stop on the midcourse brake. And - the elements are too big due to the higher speeds.

I liked the Dragons a lot, and put them about even with Montu - all top-10 rides just a bit behind Raptor and TG. I'm in the minority in liking Ice a bit better than Fire, but not by much.

Batman is one I like quite a bit, but rate behind everything other than Alpie due to the frenetic pace. The other rides have a nice flow between elements and good pacing - with TG really winning big here for me. Batman seems to be slam -direction change - slam direction change - repeat. Good for a change, but not what I like best - well not on coasters anyway :P

I gave up on trying to count rides, but just based on guesstimates I'm sure I've ridden Top Gun over 1000 times. This certainly gives it an advantage over the other rides - I've ridden it a multitude of different conditions. TG seems a bit more "woodie-like" than most steel coasters I've ridden, in that it seems to vary quite a bit with time of day or changing weather conditions. I've gotten my share of "bleh" rides where I certainly wouldn't rate it my #2 steel. I've gotten many more good-to-excellent rides. Several times a year I get some REALLY good rides that remind me why this is one of my favorites. And at least a handful of times a year - often at Scarowinds - I get some OH MY GOD rides that always push it past every other invert I've ridden.

Still, even Alpie that I slam on a bit here is very high up in my overall rankings - B&M inverts are by far my favorite type of steel coaster.

I forgot about Dueling Dragons, i'm also in the minority liking Ice more than Fire. Actually, to re-arrange my inverts a bit (B&M), it would be Alpie, DD: Ice, Raptor/TG tie, then the others. And an interesting point to talk about...I've always gotten much better rides out of the yellow train than red (i've been on each hundreds of times) and yellow just always gave a faster, smoother ride it seems than red. Maybe it's just me, but the two trains seem to give a different ride. Many rides i've had on the red train have been "meh" rides while yellow (the next run) would be a "wooooooooo" ride

Since we're talking inverteds here, Montu, is my favourite. I've never had a bad ride on it despite of what people what said about it being braked so bad in the past. I think its Batwing is better and much more tighter. It whips you into the trench and out of it very quickly. The last half is just non flips in and out of the tunnels with the footchopper providing some thrills.

Talon is another favourite of mine. Even though I only got one ride on it and that was because it was down for most of the evening. I was pleasantly surprised at just how fun it was.

Volcano is a blast. I know. Pun intended. I don't care that its short. I love that first launch out into the open air. Then, you hit the second launch and go straight out the top of it. Even better at night when you just see the lights of the parks and the stars above you. The gently gliding through the rolls headed back to the station is almost relaxing. Sure the last drop is kinda disappointing. But, I've never let it bothered me. In fact, if the lines are short, its right back on for a ride through the Congo.

Fire/Ice: I'm gonna say Ice too. I've never been that impressed with Fire.

Alpengeist: Bigger isn't always better. The Cobra Roll is a snap. I like it but just not totally enamoured of it. Usually my time at BG is spent at the Wolf and Apollo.

For rankings:
Montu
Talon
Top Gun
Ice
Batman
Fire
Raptor (really wasn't impressed with it)

Ken I agree with you on the variables to TG's ride, but probably most are that way as well, but seems like TG for some reason is more than most.

Maybe it's the fact that Top Gun's first drop is kind of exposed and not enclosed within a park like most are. Not sure if that makes sense (like the heat or lack of affects it more than others).

C3 though was the most awesome time ever on Top Gun that night. That thing was flying!

I had almost forgotten that other variable that coasterholic mentioned - the trains. Yellow has always been my fave and does seem faster much of the time. Red isn't a slouch, but there does seem to be a difference. And yeah, Wes, I'm not saying that other steel doesn't vary from morning to night or with the weather, but TG seems to be more sensitive to it or something.

Other Beemer inverts may have a "good" train and a "better" train but I've never noticed it. I don't know if it's due to TG having two easily identifiable trains - with the Cardinal / Shark wheelcovers and different paint schemes it's much easier to pick out TG's trains at a glance. Most others you have to look for the identification markings to figure out which train it is. Actually, offhand I can't think of any of the ones on my list that didn't have identical trains. Are there any other ones with different paintschemes / wheelcovers on different trains? The other Top Gun out in Cali might, but I'm not sure. And I know about Dragons, but those 2 different coasters :P

Maybe I'm not the only one who is counting the number of people in front of me when in line trying to figure out which train I'll be on - LOL.

Seats of course also make a difference. I dare anyone to say TG is forceless (as I've seen in some reviews) if they ride the back-right corner of the Shark train when the ride is "on".

I like Volcano as well, but just feel that they waste TONS of energy on that thing where it could be doing something more interesting. Those inline-twists or whatever are just not that great of an element for me. I guess it feels like they had to have it do something between point A and point B and didn't put much thought into it. The launches, however, are incredibly good and I do like the ride overall. Oh, and I agree about that last drop - it feels like "Hey, this is just about to do something very good...." and you stop.

Aa far as i can remember, Nemesis is (and has been for a while) the top ranked Invert on CoasterFanatics.Com. After riding it last week, I fully understand why. I have been on Top Gun (Caro), Raptor, Silver Bullet, Batman (Few of them), Dragons, Montu, Nemesis Inferno, Great Bear, and Talon and it poops on all of them.

At least that is my opinion.

Maybe I'm not the only one who is counting the number of people in front of me when in line trying to figure out which train I'll be on - LOL.

Dude, i do the exact same thing every time i get on line lol  But i don't change where i am, i just like to know where i'll be (and it oddly enough turns out that i ride yellow about 2/3 of the time). What you were talking about with other coasters having a difference in trains, i think another reason may be that on Top Gun, you can get 2 rides in 10-15min if not waiting for the front on a weekday, so you have a very short timeframe to remember the experiences by for comparison, as opposed to other parks which have 45 min wait or something, and as you said, it's hard to identify trains. Plus going to Carowinds regularly, we get so many re-rides (100s or 1000s of them, rather than just a handfull or two of rides at parks we visit for vacation). It is kind of interesting to think about though. I've heard somewhere before that one of the trains we got was a used train? Is that true? If so, that might explain a little.
