Has anyone heard about the rumored Disney theme park resort to be built in the Wilmington, NC area? Even one of the local TV stations in the area had a story on this:

<a href='http://www.wwaytv3.com/Global/story.asp?S=5025492&nav=menu70_2' target='_blank'>http://www.wwaytv3.com/Global/story.asp?S=...92&nav=menu70_2</a>

Such rumors about Disney building a theme park resort in the Wilmington, NC area do not surprise me a bit! There had been somewhat of a film/TV industry in the Wilmington area off and on for the last 20 years, which peaked in the mid-to-late 1990's. Many movies and TV shows have been made there, though this has declined a bit since the late 1990's. The TV shows Dawson's Creek and One Tree Hill are/were filmed there, as was the pilot epsiode of Touched By an Angel. This, as well as its close proximity to the #2 rated vacation spot in the U.S., Myrtle Beach, SC (71 miles southwest of Wilmington) make this rumor quite predictable!

More about the movie and TV studio in Wilmington, as well as the film industry in this area in general, can be found at the link I enclosed below:

In the article it says that Disney has no plans to build another US park.

Seems like that answers it to me.

It could very well be a DVC resort (no park).

I agree.

To me if Disney was looking to build a resort it would be at Myrtle Beach where there is already a big tourist draw.

Wilmington is more just a family beach and not a big tourist draw like MB.

While true, I would imagine if Disney were to build a new park somewhere that place would automatically become a tourist destination. That said, I think it will be a very long time before Disney builds a new park in the United States.

Well, they did look into propery close to the airport at MB for a DVC resort once.

But the DVC resorts really do not factor destination (to a degree). Look at the Vero Beach and Hilton Head Island resorts. They are designed to be the destination, rather than compliment a destination. But they do have many DVC resorts at WDW resort as well, so eh... who knows. Probably nothing but overexcited hype anyway.

Some of you may remember, back about 10 years or so ago, Disney was looking at a large parcel of land in south central Virginia, near South Hill, to build a Patriotic-themed park/resort. Residents and, I believe, the state of Virginia turned them down cold ~ they wanted no part of another Disney theme park in their community/state.

On the other hand, I would thoroughly expect Disney to secure properties for DVC resorts similar to Vero Beach and Hilton Head ~ nothing would prevent them from considering property for such along the NC coastline... and as a matter of fact, it would probably represent an excellent choice for them!
