I am currently working on the guidelines for the boards, and I'm interested in hearing your opinions on the issue of grammar and post organization. I personally feel that a rule regarding this is necessary, but some may disagree with me so I'm opening it for discussion. Some people can't understand people's posts and it makes them hard to read when capitilization isn't used in certain spots, chat slang is used, and grammar is absolutely horrid. This is not a chat room, but a moderated forum, so there is really no excuse for someone not taking the time to write their posts properly, but as you can see by reading posts it is still a problem. Should there be a rule regarding this, or does it not bother most of you?

It is good to have and enforce this rule. Like you said, there are some forums with these "encrypted" postings that make little or no sense and it can become quite bothersome having to decipher through a bunch of jibberish.

well IMO (in my opinion) most people here are chatters and its habitual to use computer language on a computer, regardless of what its for. Now as far as the spelling im not walking webster. Personally i feel as long as it looks like the word and can be pronounced as the word then hey its cool. everyone here hasnt graduated from school so its ok to me. The grammar is the same. Not everyone is taught the same like for instance i generally dont use "yall" but its cool cause its how some were raised and its a regional word. As far as the puncuation well without it the post can get a little confusing. so its gonna be hard defining some things when it comes to that because no one nows anyone else's level of education for one and different people are taught different things

I think not only should we try to proper grammer, but we should be polite to each other, and make everyone feel welcome.

I've been thinking about this topic for a while now. Is it really too much to ask of a person to use correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and even capitalization to make their posts readable and presentable for everybody? I don't claim to be a perfect writer. But, I try to make my thoughts presentable so everybody will understand them. I come on here and see posts that are virtually unreadable because of the lack of proper grammar. The lack of capitalization makes sentences look run on. I won't even get into the improper spelling. If you get in a hurry and it causes you to make errors, slow down for a minute and take your time. It's really not that much trouble to type out "are" instead of "r" or "you" for "u." It makes me feel like I'm reading song titles on a Prince cd.

Somebody said "that because no one nows anyone else's level of education for one and different people are taught different things." I disagree with this because I don't think they've changed the basics of grammar. Even in Jr. high and elementary school, you're taught the basics of grammar. I don't see them changing anytime soon.

One thing that's been nagging at me is that it seems people post stuff just to be posting. "I agree" is a prime example. Okay, you agree. Tell us why. Put some meat into your post. I'll see a bunch of responses by people in about every topic and there's nothing there but some sentence or two or three words that make no sense whatsoever. I'm not asking for a paragraph or thesis. If you post something, make it worth reading. There are some really good posters on here. There could be some really great ones on here if some people put their mind to it.

Since the people who replied to this agreed with me, I will be trying to write the new guidelines this weekend, and this will be included. So, for those of you who still type like you are just learning the language for the first time, you'd better get to work.
