New Wave Pool, Cabana Service Highlight Expansion of Boomerang Bay Water Park

Bondi Beach headlines bigger, wetter, better water park in 2008

Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 5, 2007) – Carowinds Boomerang Bay water park will undergo its second multi-million dollar expansion in three years for the 2008 season, adding a new, 600,000-gallon wave pool, rental cabanas with chair-side service and numerous other amenities prior to its opening in May.

Bondi Beach (pronounced Bond-eye), Carowinds second wave pool, will total 34,000 square feet ─ 9,000 more than the existing Great Barrier Reef wave pool in Boomerang Bay  with 275 feet of “beach frontage” (shallow end width), giving guests ample opportunity to sunbathe as they watch the waves roll in on the zero-depth entry. Bondi Beach will measure 75 feet at its widest point on the deep end, with a maximum depth of six feet. Special water effects (geysers) also will be located in the shallow end of the pool. The attraction is named after the world-famous Australian beach located less than five miles from Sydney.

The park also plans the addition of 16 rental cabanas around the new wave pool. The cabanas will provide a great way to beat the heat in a comfortable, shady setting and come complete with chair-side service from one of Boomerang Bay’s eateries.

“Boomerang Bay continues to grow in popularity each season at the park,” said John Shanrock, vice president and general manager of Carowinds. “Even with expansion just two years ago, there’s a need for additional space and attractions, as well as demand for the new amenities that we’ll be offering in 2008. Our guests have told us that they want to see a bigger water park, so we’re happy to give them Bondi Beach and much more.”

In addition to the new wave pool and cabanas, the expansion of Boomerang Bay also includes Beach Bites - a walk up food stand with patio -, a new restroom/bathhouse facility, tube rentals for the wave pool, additional rental lockers and Outback Outfitters, a merchandise and apparel store.

The additions expand the size of Boomerang Bay to 20 acres, bringing the total size of Carowinds to 112 acres.

Inspired by Australia’s breathtaking Gold Coast, Boomerang Bay is an Outback oasis of family fun that features a number of exciting water attractions that appeal to all ages. Besides Bondi Beach, the water park features four additional pools – Great Barrier Reef, Kookaburra Bay, a zero to three foot depth lagoon, as well as Kangaroo Lagoon and Wallaby Wharf, designed with the youngest guests in mind. The fast-flowing collection of water slide thrills includes Sydney Sidewinder, Awesome Aussie Twister, Platypus Plunge, Down Under Thunder and Pipeline Peak – an 80-foot tall, spiraling giant that contains two tube slides and two body slides. For a slightly slower pace, guests can float leisurely down the 1,000 foot-long Crocodile run, a lazy river that travels through two states, or splash and play at Jackaroo Landing, a three-story water jungle gym with a 1,000-gallon drenching bucket.

“You only need to walk through Boomerang Bay for a few minutes during the height of the summer season to see the popularity of all of the great attractions that our water park has to offer,” Shanrock said. “Bondi Beach and the other additions next season are sure to add even more memorable summertime experiences for our guests.”

Carowinds is the only theme park in the Carolinas to offer two great parks for the price of one. Admission to Boomerang Bay is free with the purchase of a ticket to Carowinds.

Now is the time to purchase a 2008 Season Pass to enjoy visits to Boomerang Bay all summer long. For a limited time, every Season Pass purchase receives free parking, good at all Cedar Fair Parks all season long, as well as a free, lined Cedar Fair windbreaker with all purchases by Nov. 11. Log on to http://www.carowinds.com to buy season passes now.

The expanded Boomerang Bay opens to the public on May 24, 2008, and is open every park operating day through Sept. 1.

Carowinds will open for its 36th season in 2008 on Easter Weekend, with an extended operating schedule of Friday through Monday (March 21 – 24) during the holiday time period. The complete 2008 operating schedule (including days of operation for Boomerang Bay) will be posted at http://www.carowinds.com in the near future.

so lets see, 2 seasons ago, we get a second kiddie pool we didn't need, now we get a 2nd wave pool we don't need...who needs 2 friggin wave pools...and who seems to think that's a good investment? GIVE US SOME SLIDES....now THAT is what we need. If you've been in one wave pool, you've been in them all (ok, some are different, but they are essentially the same). At LEAST make the waves as big as those at Watercountry USA (now THOSE are fun waves)

Holiday World has two wave pools and it helps out their water park :) But, I know they've got other stuff too along with the last wave pool.

I know you'll be disappointed over the lack of slides, etc. But, I look at this way, the park has a plan. Let them follow it. Remember the year they announced the first Boomerang Bay remodel, season pass sales went up.

I'd have settled for a Zoombadwee type slide or even the racing slides. The Zinga and toilet bowl slides like at HW were disappointing to me.

The indoor waterpark at the Great Wolf Lodge in Cabarrus County is going to have one of those bowls. No Master Blaster like the one in the Dells....

I don't see why CF doesn't invest in one of those Master Blaster rides for Carowinds instead of another wave pool...

I would actually consider buying a season pass then. ;)

Ugh... Sorry Personal Opinion.

I have a pool where I live. Water is water. Aren't we having problems with Drought anyway. Do we honestly need more water attractions.

In addition I make maybe one trip to the waterpark in a year.

So I'm paying MORE for a season pass, losing out on all the perks that I received the first year I had one - last year - And all I would have to look forward to new next year IF I get one and get it now is free parking and a pool that won't open until over a month into the park season that I will never use.

You guys know I love my park... but this year... I think I'll pass. I just won't do a themepark this year and will prolly just ride a coaster when I go out to Vegas in January.

Lets hope something else happens.

Lets look on the brightside, they haven't officially announced it yet and decided to hold off on the announcement, so maybe, just maybe, they plan on adding something else, like a new slide.
