Some Paramount trademarked ride names have been changed to the Generic Cedar Fair names.

Italian Job: Stunt Coaster is now --> Back Lot Stunt Coaster

and

Tomb Raider: The Ride is now --> The Crypt

Wow.

So what does this mean for Carowinds?

And for that matter, Kings Island, "Cali's" Great America, and Canada's Wonderland?

I doubt it cause most of our names have nothing to do with their themes for the most part. Hurler, Scream Weaver won't change because the license for those were dropped in 2001. Possibly the same for Skyflyer.
Personally, I think they will leave most names the same. Here are my suggestions.
BORG --> Assimilator(Real creative, huh? )
TG:TJC --> Maverick or Thunderhawk
Drop Zone: Stunt Tower --> Drop Zone(Doesnt lake Winnie have a ride named DZ?)
When you think about it, we were the leasted Paramounted park of them all.
1993-Days Of Thunder(Now SpongeBob on ONE side), Scream Weaver
1994-Hurler(license dropped in 2001)
1995-Xtreme Skyflyer(Themed to Wayne's World? If so, see Hurler)
1996-Drop Zone:Stunt Tower(Other parks use first half of name)
1999-TG:TJC(Most Likely to be renamed, half the name could be dropped.)
2000-N:FSS(Fate Unknown!)
2003-Reptar(License may be renewed, but rumors have been heard that only Carowinds will have Nick in 2008)
2004-BORG(ST:TE is managed by CF but I don't know if license for name is belongs to PP or the hotel.)
2005-See 2003
2006-Boomerang Bay(Croc. Dundee never used)

For some reason I'd like something to do with the Military to keep with that theme. And we could put some rides in that area that doesn't get used by TG. Maybe Jethawk or something, idk lol.

Nick and Borg are safe, they're keeping the Nick license (for now, and smart move that is).

As for Trek, they own and operate The Experience, so they pay for the Trek licensing anywho. The good thing about Trek is that even though it's a Paramount franchise, it's strong enough on it's own like Nick to be kept. Esp. with a new movie coming out in 2008.

I've also always liked the name Vulture. And maybe if BORG ever does lose the Trek theming maybe American Eagle for a retheme, to match the area.

I personally hope CF keeps the name Top Gun. Our ride in particular has built up such a large following among the GP that I imagine everyone would just continue to call it that anyway if the name was changed.

Even if Cedar Fair doesn't want to license from Paramount, the phrase "TOPGUN" (of course) refers to the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, so perhaps they could just change the logo and remove the space between the two words.

Note that one ride with a Paramount movie theme isn't on that list - Drop Zone. Does this mean that name is staying? It would seem so, at least for 2008. The KD website has the new names up for Italian Job and Tomb Raider, but still has DZ named as DZ.

Tomb Raider and Italian Job were the newest of the Paramount "franchises" (aside from any Nick stuff) so maybe it's telling that those are the first to go. Also, they involved third parties - TR of course was originally a video game, so Eidos or whoever owns the rights to that now will want a cut. Italian Job has the twist of involving BMW, due to the trains looking like MINI Coopers. It's entirely possible that these names / themes have more involved / more expensive licensing agreements than for stuff like Drop Zone and Top Gun.

Paramount could license those older franchises for less, and since they're not having to answer to any third parties, could've given Cedar Fair an even better deal on them when they sold the parks. That may include BORG as well, or possibly that's affected by the Star Trek Experience in Vegas licensing.

All of the parks have a Drop Zone, and all except KD have a Top Gun. If the cost of maintaining those licenses is relatively minimal, CF may just keep those names to avoid having to rename 9 rides. Without knowing all the details of the various deals, it's all speculation of course. Drop Zone and Top Gun really fit well with their respective rides, so it'd be nice if they do stay.

Of course I'm fully prepared for TG to have some goofy name next season, just in case. I'll still call it Top Gun, of course.

I do agree with an American Eagle Theme for Borg . Then they can transform the Borg's sphere to look like an Eagles egg/nest. LOL!

^^ An old joke amongst some of the Ohio crowd on the 'net is calling Mantis TCFKAB - which stands for "The coaster formerly known as Banshee". Apparently Banshee was it's name during development, but that had some negative connotation so they changed it. There were still some promo materials out there that people got that had Banshee on them.

I guess we could use TCFKATG:TJC .....

Names only affect the the patrons that go from the point it was changed. To me, there will always be a Scooby Doo and Frenzoid. They sound better anyway.
I was able to finally get over the "Eastern Sky Tower", and now just call it the needle. LOL
