If they extended them, I'm betting the better snappers will be able to make the tubs hit the ground more easily.

Was soooooo glad when I went to the park today to see that the Flyers were up and running, and running well.

First ride was meh, which was just me being rusty. Got my rhythm back on ride #2, "winning" the highest flyer contest the ride ops were conducting each cycle. Never got any wicked snaps, but several good ones and I was getting a good bit of height there at the end.

Great, great day at the park overall - Got in Cobra, Goldrusher, Vortex, Hurler, T-Road, Ricochet, several rides on Afterburn as well as the flyers and the obligatory ride on Skytower to check on construction, all in a couple of hours. Oh, and Afterburn's blue train (former yellow) was flat out smoking today. Got in a ride up front which was quite fast and forceful, so had to get another in back-right although I'd already done that several times on the Red train. It didn't disappoint. :D

Great analysis! Thanks :)

Dani is the Marketing guru, but when it come to the technical side of things she is still a novice. There is this thing called a ride envelope that extending the cable would violate. If the cables were extended, the tubs would hit the queue structure cover and that would not be good for the rides or the people waiting to ride. The gearbox is new and running great. Has anyone noticed if the ride is a little faster or slower? It is close either way to the same speed as before.

When the flyers were moved, the old wound rotor motor was replaced, and a variable frequency drive installed. Knowing Mr. Jackson, he probably dialed that thing in using every decimal place he had to the manufacturer's design speed.

When those Flyers were at Kings Island, the ride cycle was a bit different.

The ride would start off and slowly gain speed.. then it would kick into gear.... Then once the cycle was to finish up, it would begin slowly slowing down.... It literally took 8-10 revolutions to finish up once power was cut. The new motor they have is a lot better, though I missed the initial "kick" because that helped with my timing.

Oh, and for those who think they do.... The tubs don't hit the ground
If they did, there would be sparks, dents in the tubs, griding and huge holes in the concrete and people with lots of back pain.

The "kick into gear" was actually when the resistors in rotor circuit would cut out, making it act like a normal motor - but there was a definite change in torque when that happened. You should have felt another step, as I am pretty sure it would have been a 3 step (2 sets of resistors and then shorted).

On the wound rotor motor, it was a coast to stop. With the drive, it is set up for some braking through the drive. Something like 3 cycles to get it stopped. It made a definite difference on ride capacity.

Got to find out who Anthony was today. He was on the Flyers first thing this morning. There was alot of good operators today though.
I got my 6 year old on the Flyers today, it is hard to get him on anything because he doesn't like anything high or fast. I told him I'd keep it low.........We ended up riding 5 straight times, and 12 for the day. He loves them now. :D

Umm, I've seen a video with a tub hitting the ground, and I believe it was Jonathan that hit the queue roof.

I can't say that I personally have ever witnessed anyone hit the ground, but I did clip the corner of the canopy over the queue opening year. Scared the hell out of some people, myself probably most of all.

Okay, send me a link to that video then. I 'll believe it when I see it.

Clipping the roof I can see happening for sure.

I've only managed to hit some of the limbs from the tree over by Scooby Doo a few times - and I didn't charge Carowinds for my tree-trimming services either. :D

Oh, and I've hit another tub twice. Both times were when the ride was slowing down after both my tub and the one in front were getting some very good snappage, thus swinging pretty wildly at the end. Definitely got my attention, especially the first time since I didn't think they could touch.

After riding 4 times again tonight, I'm convinced that they have extended the cycle a bit. Not much, but it seems about 20 seconds longer.

And as far as bumps and such, I've bumped 1 tub just like you described Ken at the end of the ride.

I honestly don't see how they could hit the ground.
