On our way to the In-Laws in Mississippi, my family stopped in Atlanta for a quick fix.
We arrived at the park at 10:30 to an almost empty parking lot. I knew that Sunday's lines wouldn't be as bad as Saturday, but I was still expecting a big crowd today with long lines. To my surprise it wasn't that at all. Even the temp. was comfortable. We were expecting 90 degree weather, but I don't think it even got close to that. Anyway on to the park:
First of all, every coaster was running two trains. First ride was on Goliath. All I can say is I can't wait for Carowinds to get one of these. With the thought of Carowinds getting something like this and possibly even bigger I'm just overly excited. Not only does it pack a great ride, it also dominates the skyline at SFOG. It's almost as fun to watch as it is to ride. Of course any Hyper/Giga does this for me. Anyway, the ride was great, much like I remembered it last year. Two rides on it in the morning with about a 15 minute wait each time.
After Goliath, me and the wife took the kids to ride some of the smaller stuff. Me and the boy took a couple of rides on Canyon Blaster. Nice kiddie coaster, love the theming/setting of this. IMO, much nicer than Taxi Jam or whatever it's called now. I won't go into all the other kiddie rides, but I will say the staffing was very friendly in this area. They went out of their way to assist in taking pictures with the kids and characters in the area. Very impressed!
I took my son (7 year old) onto his first ride on the Delongha Mine Train. Although he didn't know it, this was a test or stepping stone to something bigger in the day. The ride was not so good. Really jerked a lot and just was not well paced. I'll take our GoldRusher any day over this one. I do like the leg room inside the trains better than the GoldRusher though. Anyway after this ride we took a lunch break at the Carrott Club. Family Meal including a Papa Johns Pizza, Salad, bread sticks, and two huge cookies. All this for $42. That sucks, but I guess this is what you get when you eat at theme parks.
After lunch, more rides for the kids. The smallest one (1 1/2 yr old) was enjoying time on
the Carousel, El toro (little bull ride) and many other small rides. We also took her to Thomas Town which she enjoyed. After the kids got their fix, we decided to head to Gotham. I was hoping my boy would ride the Mind Bender with me. He's a huge Batman fan, so I explained to him that this ride was taken over by the Riddler. He was really up for it until we got in the que and he saw the dreaded first loop. When he saw that he started asking a lot of questions. I tried to settle his fears and assured him that he would not fall out of the train as it was traveling through the loop. I've got to say, I was really impressed with the little man. I don't think I ever would have had the courage to get on this at his age. Anyway the line was only about a 10-15 minute wait. Once we got on the train and up the lift hill, I could see a little fear in Garrett's eyes. He spent the whole ride with his head in my armpit with eyes closed, but he did make it. I was so proud of him. The ride was just as I remembered it, fast paced, a little rough but overall a classic. He wasn't big enough to ride Batman, so maybe next year we can concur that one. I however tried Batman, but the line was about at the 75 minute mark, so I decided to leave the line so my kids wouldn't have to wait on me. I've ridden many times and this one doesn't compare to our Afterburn so no big loss.
To the back side of the park where I got Garrrett on the Scream Machine with me. He seemed to like this one a little better. Of course this is another classic. It ran pretty smooth and seemed to pick up speed towards the end of the ride after the turn around. We tried Superman, but much like Batman the line was to long (more than an hour) to wait with little one's sitting there with nothing to do.
Back towards the front of the park as the day has grown long. Made a quick trip on Arachnophobia, the Georgia Scorcher and the Flume Ride. All good rides, with the flume ride not being as good as Carowinds. Of course I guess it's better than what we have now. Oh well....Off to Mississippi.
Overall we had a really nice day at the park. The parks staff was really young, but for the most part really well trained and polite. With the exception of some young lady on the Flume ride trying to sing songs over the radio (reminded me of what you use to see at the Hurler with that crew) everyone was very professional and courteous. For the general admission price of 39$ for adults, I thought this was a great value.
