On our way to the In-Laws in Mississippi, my family stopped in Atlanta for a quick fix.

We arrived at the park at 10:30 to an almost empty parking lot. I knew that Sunday's lines wouldn't be as bad as Saturday, but I was still expecting a big crowd today with long lines. To my surprise it wasn't that at all. Even the temp. was comfortable. We were expecting 90 degree weather, but I don't think it even got close to that. Anyway on to the park:

First of all, every coaster was running two trains. First ride was on Goliath. All I can say is I can't wait for Carowinds to get one of these. With the thought of Carowinds getting something like this and possibly even bigger I'm just overly excited. Not only does it pack a great ride, it also dominates the skyline at SFOG. It's almost as fun to watch as it is to ride. Of course any Hyper/Giga does this for me. Anyway, the ride was great, much like I remembered it last year. Two rides on it in the morning with about a 15 minute wait each time.

After Goliath, me and the wife took the kids to ride some of the smaller stuff. Me and the boy took a couple of rides on Canyon Blaster. Nice kiddie coaster, love the theming/setting of this. IMO, much nicer than Taxi Jam or whatever it's called now. I won't go into all the other kiddie rides, but I will say the staffing was very friendly in this area. They went out of their way to assist in taking pictures with the kids and characters in the area. Very impressed!

I took my son (7 year old) onto his first ride on the Delongha Mine Train. Although he didn't know it, this was a test or stepping stone to something bigger in the day. The ride was not so good. Really jerked a lot and just was not well paced. I'll take our GoldRusher any day over this one. I do like the leg room inside the trains better than the GoldRusher though. Anyway after this ride we took a lunch break at the Carrott Club. Family Meal including a Papa Johns Pizza, Salad, bread sticks, and two huge cookies. All this for $42. That sucks, but I guess this is what you get when you eat at theme parks.

After lunch, more rides for the kids. The smallest one (1 1/2 yr old) was enjoying time on
the Carousel, El toro (little bull ride) and many other small rides. We also took her to Thomas Town which she enjoyed. After the kids got their fix, we decided to head to Gotham. I was hoping my boy would ride the Mind Bender with me. He's a huge Batman fan, so I explained to him that this ride was taken over by the Riddler. He was really up for it until we got in the que and he saw the dreaded first loop. When he saw that he started asking a lot of questions. I tried to settle his fears and assured him that he would not fall out of the train as it was traveling through the loop. I've got to say, I was really impressed with the little man. I don't think I ever would have had the courage to get on this at his age. Anyway the line was only about a 10-15 minute wait. Once we got on the train and up the lift hill, I could see a little fear in Garrett's eyes. He spent the whole ride with his head in my armpit with eyes closed, but he did make it. I was so proud of him. The ride was just as I remembered it, fast paced, a little rough but overall a classic. He wasn't big enough to ride Batman, so maybe next year we can concur that one. I however tried Batman, but the line was about at the 75 minute mark, so I decided to leave the line so my kids wouldn't have to wait on me. I've ridden many times and this one doesn't compare to our Afterburn so no big loss.

To the back side of the park where I got Garrrett on the Scream Machine with me. He seemed to like this one a little better. Of course this is another classic. It ran pretty smooth and seemed to pick up speed towards the end of the ride after the turn around. We tried Superman, but much like Batman the line was to long (more than an hour) to wait with little one's sitting there with nothing to do.

Back towards the front of the park as the day has grown long. Made a quick trip on Arachnophobia, the Georgia Scorcher and the Flume Ride. All good rides, with the flume ride not being as good as Carowinds. Of course I guess it's better than what we have now. Oh well....Off to Mississippi.

Overall we had a really nice day at the park. The parks staff was really young, but for the most part really well trained and polite. With the exception of some young lady on the Flume ride trying to sing songs over the radio (reminded me of what you use to see at the Hurler with that crew) everyone was very professional and courteous. For the general admission price of 39$ for adults, I thought this was a great value.

Did not ride the Georgia Cyclone. I rode it last year, and it was just way to rough. It was impossible for me to even enjoy it the least little bit. I've not heard of it being given any TLC, so I didn't bother with it this time.

I forgot to mention that the new Monster Mansion was packed all day long. Didn't get a chance to ride it either.

Went to SFOG friday6-19-09. Couldn't pass it up tickets are only $29 bucks online. Park was pretty dead for a friday, was very Hot! First ride was on Georgia Scorcher, still as smooth as I can remember. Next Goliath, got in the 2nd row waited about 10 min, they had all 3 trains running. What a great ride only 200 feet I think but what a smooth ride. Got off and got right back on the last car 2 more times only waited 10 min. The back you float the entire ride was great. Next Ninja, no wait, that vekoma 1 ride was enough.

Next Great American Scream Machine once agian walked right up got right on. The biggest thing I noticed going up the lift hill all the wood is totally dry rotted, cracked, bowed, splitting it really needs some tlc, but the ride still has great airtime although felt like the train wasn't attached to the track half the time. Next up Superman, Longest wait and only had 1 train running. Waited 45 min from the point in the line that said 15 min from this point, was gonna ride agian but they shut it down. Seems like they kept having problems with the seat restaints.

Now we hit up Georgia Cyclone, is about as rough as the hurler. One ride was enough, atleast I don't need to see the ciropractor now.

Went by Monster Plantion but the wait was over 1.5 hour everytime we went by. So went over to Batman and Mindbender, once agian walked right up got on mindbender. Batman only had about a 5 min wait, 15 for front row.

One last ride in the back on Goliath 15 min wait. I give SFOG alot of credit getting those trains in out so fast.

One last thing to mention as I will post All B&M's at sfog footers start with C # and end L or R see the photos on

Cyclone being "as rough as Hurler" would be a VAST improvement over 2006. This woodie was my #1 until that trip, where it dropped WAY down due to the roughness. True, it would've lost that spot to Voyage which I rode a few days later regardless, but it would've been a strong #2.

The airtime in the back row can be absolutely insane at times, such as my first rides in 2002 with a rain-slickened track. Rides in following years weren't quite that good but still superb. In 2006, the airtime was still mostly there, but the washboarding everywhere else was some of the worst I've ever experienced. And I've ridden Son of Beast, Hurricane, and Mean Streak. The hard padding used on the Cyclone trains certainly doesn't help matters. I got 3 rides that day, loved the airtime, but couldn't bear the rest of the ride to experience it. As much as I enjoyed Goliath, it really made me sad that I wasn't able to also enjoy Cyclone.

i went to SFOG at the end of march but only got to ride goliath, superman, GASM, and ninja due to rain. and i was going to take a trip down later this year and was wondering what are your takes on all the coasters i missed? just wanting to know which ones are worth riding

Forgot to add this but on the park map where it has the ride descriptions, it says SUPERMAN ULTIMATE FLIGHT,- Thrill level max,The south's only flying coaster. I guess sfog doesn't consider carowinds in the south or Nighthawk not a flying coaster. I tried to take a picture of it and post it since i thought it was funny, but my camera won't come out clear enough.

As was said above, ride them all if you can obviously. I will say that Mind Bender is one of my favorite steel coasters anywhere, and I've been on quite a few. There are hardly any steel coasters I can think of that I would really label a "classic", but Mind Bender is definitely a classic. It's just so much fun.

Not to mention they now have Manta to compete with at Sea World.
