The 2010 rehire day was a blast. I greeted coworkers I knew and saw many I didn’t. There are still lots of positions to fill as many of the workers did not return. We received our new work assignments, orientation and training dates, filled out tax and other forms, and were even drug tested, to which some people did not pass and were told to leave, opening up even more unfilled positions.
Come on out park lovers. If you are 15 years or older and would like a fun part-time job, Carowinds is hiring for its grand new season. Last year the park’s job fair drew media attention and during an interview spokeswoman Dani said it best, “This is the first time in Carowinds’ history that the park has a choice of quality and type of employees it hires.â€
As our economy is still in the same rocky condition, I expect a repeat of last years huge stacks of applications and long employment lines made up from high schoolers to college grads with PhDs, all looking for work. The time to move is now. Go to Carowinds’ website and fill out the online application so office staff can pull it up and print it when you arrive, saving you time and moving you through the line quicker. After you fill out the app, don’t wait for someone to call you, get your bun buns out there. If you arrive early enough, you could be interviewed and hired the same day. The employment office is right off Carowinds Blvd., behind Thunder Road’s turnaround point. The Feb 6th job fair is on as scheduled but the Feb 13 date may be scrapped. Don’t wait! Check the “Hiring†dates and times at http://www.carowinds.com or call them and get out there before the job fair if you can (704 588 2600).
Interview Tips:
1. Dress in upper casual clothing or better, not jeans & T-shirts. Remember, your competition is high. The goal is to get the job.
2. Leave your music makers and cell phones in the car. Interact with the people in line. You may learn something valuable.
3. During your interview you might be asked, why do you want to work here? Don’t say the boring, “I like working with people.†What else will you be working with… animals? Be creative with your responses and try not to sound like everyone else; smile and show you are an outgoing people person without actually saying it; don’t be fake or they will see it; be truthful and own that interview!
4. Take your picture ID and your social security card with you.
5. Don’t go with body odor and horrible breath. The interview rooms are small and this will work against you. If this is the first impression you give to be hired, you’ll probably come to work like that too. Yulk! NO HIRE. Pass! Thanks for coming. Bye. Next...
6. Don’t over do it with colognes, perfumes, and powders. Your interviewer could be allergic or sickened and may cut your interview short.
7. Take out all facial piercing. You won’t be able to work in them anyway.
8. Be well groomed: Absolutely no dreadlocks allowed on employees. Women: don’t go looking like a misplaced stage, show girl. Tone down that make-up to look natural, and wear toned down nail polish, and natural hair colors. Men: take out the earrings. You can’t work in them anyway. If your ears hang down because of oversized rings, I honestly don’t know how they will handle you, but I can say I’ve yet to see anyone working in the park with swinging earlobes. While considered sexy in parts of tribal Africa, yuz in America naw.
9. In all things, present yourselves professionally as if you’re going to work. Use good common sense and sell yourself. Presentation, presentation, presentation!
