Suprised this hasn't been posted on here yet but here it goes.

From Screamscape:

2012 - Possible New Coaster - Rumor - (3/25/11) Very little about the 2012 plans for Dollywood were discovered, but there were still some interesting new facts put out for the project, which was given unanimous approval. The project site was confirmed as being near the intersection of the Wilderness Path and Craftsman’s Valley, near the entrance to the Sky Zip. Most of the construction site will be “outside the public area”, with the plans showing that some excavation of the hillside below Sky Zip will be required to make room for the ride. According to the article, “It also depicts a lengthy and winding ride track, the relocation of a few buildings, and plans to construction a couple new ones.” All well and good… until this last bit of news which claims that at it’s highest point, the attraction will only stand 11 feet.
Yep… I’m confused… unless they are building some kind of alpine slide down the hillside that will hug the terrain. Matching up with this story is a new report from the park claimin that a new construction fence has been put up across from Adventure Mountain, blocking off the view of that entire hillside, which seems to lockdown the site.
(3/22/11) Dollywood seems to be planning something large for the 2012 season, and already has a meeting planned with the local government to talk about the new attraction on Tuesday at 3pm in City Hall. They only refer to it as “Dollywood Attraction 2012” and mention that three existing buildings will have to be relocated to make room for it. That said, this could mean it is a very large new coaster, or one going into a crowded area of the park. Given the early start on the project (which matches previous rumors), chances are that this the rumored new coaster plan for the park. They are also planning some kind of unique announcement for the project as well further down the line.
(11/15/10) The 2012 new coaster rumors for Dollywood are starting to kick in once again, this time claiming that the project, wherever it will go, may be big enough that they will have to break ground and in with serious construction on it by June or July 2011.

Planners OK 2012 addition for Dollywood

PIGEON FORGE — There weren’t many details and there was no discussion as the Pigeon Forge Planning Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the proposal for Dollywood’s 2012 addition.

Not even a name was assigned to the new ride, which one planning staffer has said looks in draft plans like some type of roller coaster, as it was presented to the group. Still, there was some additional information beyond what the site plans in the planning office provide revealed by the engineer who presented the proposal, which requires approval by the planning group as does most any addition to a property in the city.

Vision Engineering and Development Services staffer Guy Wantiez told the group it will be a large project near the intersection of the Wilderness Pass and Craftsman’s Valley areas, at the entrance of Sky Zip. Work is expected to begin even while the park is open for the season, which starts Friday.

“A large portion of that is located outside the public area, so we can get started on it early,” Wantiez said.

Typically work at the park has only been possible during the stretch from January to late March when it is closed.

The site plan approved by the group shows considerable excavation that will have to be done on the hill below the Sky Zip platforms to carve out a place for the ride. It also depicts a lengthy and winding ride track, the relocation of a few buildings, and plans to construct a couple new ones. One of those structures is being considered for a retail space, Wantiez said.

At its highest, the attraction will stand 11 feet. The project has already received approval for its stormwater impacts from state regulators, Wantiez said.

Outside that there weren’t many secrets given away about “Dollywood addition 2012,” as it has been billed in the plans. Park spokesman Pete Owens has said there will be some hype for the new ride starting perhaps as early as April. The full announcement, which Owens said will be unlike anything ever done to promote a planned theme park addition, is expected in the summer.

I'm not in the know or anything, but logistically its about time for a new coaster. Their last one was in 2007 and by 2012 it would have been 5 years without anything really significant. (River Battle in 08 and the Swing this year are nice additions to round out the park but they're certainly not coasters) I look forward to whatever they add. Dollywood never skimps, so whatever it is will be fantastic.

Side Note: On the new park map - http://www.dollywood.com/upload/pdfs/dw-guidemap11.pdf it looks like they took out the ball play area thing for the swing? Is this true? Kinda sucks if they did. :?

EDIT: Did some research.. on the Barnstormer page http://www.dollywood.com/land/barnstormer/index.html if you click on "Flight Prep" at the top you will see construction pictures. Looks like the entire Dreamland Forest area is gone, except for Slidewinder, replaced with the new "Owens Farm" moniker. I'm quite curious to see how it all looks now...

I know I'm going against many of you when I say this, but for me and my family, Dollywood simply doesn't provide enough "bang" for the expensive buck they charge... and the addition of a fantastic new coaster would certainly get us back to the park for another visit. Yes, Thunderhead is a wonderful wood coaster. Glad we went on a not-so-busy day last time and got in about 10 hops on it. The other coasters just don't get it for us. The overall atmosphere of the park is extra nice, but a new Intamin or B & M would certainly raise the park in our esteem several notches... looking forward to seeing what unfolds over the next few months. With Dollywood and Carowinds co-hosting ACE next year, I would bet they have something really decent planned...

Sounds like your family's a thrill seeking family coasterdad! Dollywood is, to me, a hit or miss park. In my opinion its a park that caters to the locals and thats very rare these days. I haven't been back to the park since mystery mine open simply because a good bit of my friends wouldn't "get" the park and I really dont like driving that far alone. The price, well a single day admission is up there but my rule of thumb is if i'm probably gonna be there twice in a season I might as well get a season pass!

I enjoyed the park last year because the staff was really friendly and the park was family oriented. Other than that our kids got a bit bored and they can certainly use more thrill rides. We were planning on going back but not til at least Coaster Con XXXV or later.

Oh my gosh, please don't tell me DollyWood is another Maggie Valley type theme park. I really want to go, or I thought I did.
When I was very young, Tweetsie RailRoad fascinated me every time I went, especially when the Indians attacked the train and the cowboys defended it. I got a chance to go again when I was older - I was bored to death. There really is nothing much there. I also noticed on the mile-high Maggie Valley TV commercial (when there was a Maggie Valley), the camera did a quick sweep of the entire park and there was nothing much there either, nor did watching the little Red Devil roller coaster do anything for me either.

Someone please tell me that DollyWood will keep me more entertained than those two parks.

To me, Dollywood could be a park visited over a stretch 2 days. Put it like this, they have everything for everyone in the family, the shows are pretty good, the food is AMAZING, you couldn't ask for a better park setting and the rides are top notch. Im pretty sure you would enjoy it and its not even comparable to ghost town at all lol lol...

Coasterbruh said it well. My wife and I enjoyed the park more than the kids. They got bored at most of the shows and wanted to go on more rides. Now be advised that these kids are the ones who thought Disney was pretty good but it didn't have enough rides (too many shows..) We raised two thrill seeking kids. They're going to love Cedar Point this year. Anyway I'm digressing and getting off topic.

We liked it enough to go a few times and still went back for the ACE event last Fall (where we had a blast). You can't really compare it to Ghost Town and Tweetsie Railroad. Dollywood easily surpasses both of them combined. The staff and customer service that we received there over our four visits last year was commendable, that alone will keep us going back there every couple of years.

The fact that moonshine is now legal in TN might get us back there this year to pick up some.

I would go as far to say that Dollywood is better than about 95% of the parks in the US.

Noticed that noone really expelled on the key feature in the article and that was this attraction would stand a mere 11feet at its highest point. Slide with that folks.

I saw that Dave, and thought it was definitely odd. Then I immediately thought of coasters that have creative use of the terrain like Boulder Dash at Lake Compounce, or anything at Alton Towers. It's definitely possible to get a big ride in that little space by thinking outside the box a bit.

CoasterDad and/or arby: Have you been to Busch Gardens Williamsburg? Did you/your kids have a good time there?

To me Busch Gardens and Dollywood are the exact same type of parks. Not many coasters, but the ones they do have are really good. Lots of non-coaster rides but nothing too crazy. Awesome theming, food, atmosphere and employees. And yes lots of shows.

I've heard that the 11 foot was a typo and that it should've been 110 foot. ;)

The majority of the fastest roller coaster on earth, Formula Rossa, doesn't get that far off the ground. There's a lot of potential as JamminJ said with the terrain of this park.

Or it could be one of them top notch Dragon roller coasters that everyone loves!!

I have not been there yet but it is high on my list of places to go. Anyone that I know who has been there says great things about it.

I have so many places I want to go, and only so much money in the budget to get there. If I wasn't following Dave Ramsey's money makeover program I'd be able to go there this year.

Dollywood is one of my favorite parks; there are only a handful I would rather visit. I haven't been bored there since they opened Thunderhead, but I definitely wouldn't complain if they added another coaster!

Aaaah, at last. My faith has been restored in visiting Dollywood. Thanks guys.
I really don't want to visit another park where I get the sense (like Tweetsie, Maggie Valley, The Land of Oz, or Mystery Hill) that this is the most exciting thing the mountain locals have for entertainment - which is not much at all.

I so admire Dolly Parton for using proceeds from her park to pay for the kids from the Pigeon Forge area to go to college.
