General Carowinds discussion

Can someone tell me what "RFD" stands for in "Carolina RFD"?

If I've ever read it or been told I forgot it. I've been coming to the park off and on since the '80's, this is my first year back with a pass in a long time. One theory I had was Rear Flank Downdraft? (weather phenomenon) But to me that sounds silly.

So, what's the answer?

*I tried several searches on here and the rest of the web with no success.

Thanks,

jeff

Rural Free Delivery is the one that fits. Before it started getting things like roller coasters themed to movies about F-14 Tomcats, that section was pretty "rural".

Although it had been canceled a year or two before the park opened, the former "Andy Griffith Show" had changed to "Mayberry RFD" when ol' Andy wasn't on it anymore. I've always assumed the idea for using RFD on that section of the park came from that TV show since it was popular at roughly the same time as the park was in planning and construction. And as a city dweller, Carowinds and the show were the only places I'd ever seen that abbreviation.

Whoops. So I was off 10 years or so, but I still think it was influenced by the TV show having that title. It would sound familiar to people even if they didn't know what it meant. At least that's what came to my mind when I first saw it.

Whether the idea came from the show or not, I'm quite sure it's Rural Free Delivery and has nothing to do with farming.
