General Carowinds discussion

I've wondered what the big deal is with taking video on rides at Carowinds. I'm sure all parks have an issue, but depending on the camera and safety issues, I would like to know why they don't want you to take video other than that some people could drop a camera and it be dangerous.

I have a GoPro video camera that straps on and is totally safe to use. I don't have to hold it at all. Last year I took it on most rides and no one said a thing. One of the employees even smiled for the camera when we getting ready to take off, but this year, one of the employees stopped the ride before it took off and said I had to remove the camera (wrist strap, hardly bigger than a watch really) and said that Carowinds could sue me. Ticked off a little, I did remove it and put it in the bin, but I was there to have fun and wasn't going to interrupt anything. I don't argue. They tell me to take it off, I do it. I didn't like her attitude about it, but not everyone has good people skills.

Besides a safety factor (which is not the condition with my type of camera), does anyone know what the reason they wouldn't want you to take video of your ride?

Thanks

I am pretty sure it is just safety. I believe the man who was blinded on Dragon Challenge was hit by a camera on the other train. People like Coasterforce are allowed to because the filmer tapes his camera to his hand and asks the park before hand.

Thanks for your reply. That's kind of what I wondered as well. Maybe I should do the same thing, by asking a park official before hand. My camera has a couple of different attachments that I can use, my favorite being the wrist band. You wear it just like you would a watch, and the camera can not come off at all. I use this camera to video tape myself wakeboarding or surfing, I've video taped when I went skydiving, and snorkeling on vacation. It's a great camera to catch a lot of activity.

I hope he doesnt have hair on his hands, or using tape easier to remove than duct tape. It is fof safety of yourself and other guests. All coasters at Carowinds have povs on youtube, why risk getting escorted out of the park?

Glad you asked! The "point" is that I would like to get video of my friends and family riding and having fun on the rides at Carowinds and other theme parks, much like people take videos of anything else. I edit the videos and put things out on my website for my friends and family to watch, some of other people, and some of themselves. It's kind of nice to have something like that to look back on, especially since we have the technology to do so.

Also, just because I take my GoPro camera with me, doesn't mean the park loses out on things. I have bought pictures after the ride on occasion to have a nice still shot that I couldn't get with my own camera.

BTW, just because they are online, doesn't mean I want to watch other people riding the ride. I do it for ME, my friends, and family. Not for anyone else.

Again, I don't care about other peoples POV videos. I want to make them of my and my friends and family. And why the risk of being escorted out. They asked me to take it off, so I did. I didn't argue or anything.

More people need to learn how to do this. Last week I saw some kid bouncing a basketball in the Intimidator station, while almost losing control of it several times. The ride attendant asked him more than once to not do, and the kid argued. I was just hoping she would have asked him to leave for not following instructions.

The rules prohibbiting filming on rides are probably regulated by the state as well as the park but the simple fact of the matter is to protect guests from falling objects such as cameras or phones....these loose items can also get lodged under a coaster trains wheels & cause the ride to stall which has happened before.

I value my camcorder too much to risk filming on rides & prefer to film them from the ground when using my camcorder but I havn't even used it so far this season after some idiot complained about me focusingmy camera on his kid,who was in the train ready to dispatch on grizzly at KD when I was simply shooting random footage while waiting to ride.

Good morning,

For safety reasons, we cannot permit on ride photography of any kind on any ride other than the Carolina Skytower. Due to the potential for water damage, Rip Roarin’ Rapids and Whitewater Falls riders should leave their cameras and other valuable items with a non-rider or in a locker.

If you are caught with a camera of any kind on a ride (including a phone), you will be escorted from the park.

Thank you for helping to keep everyone safe!

But what if you're given permission like Coasterforce?

Obviously it must be legal to film/photograph while on rides in the UK as coasterforce is a UK based website.Of course their administrators & members need to learn that, when you visit the USA the rules regarding no filming/photography on rides applies just as much to them as any other guest in the park.

Due to the fact of following rules, I will always comply, but I do have to ask, for people that do have completely safe cameras that are no danger to anyone, like the GoPro, why can't something like that be an exception. There are chest and wrist attachments where the camera can in no way come off and injure anyone else, and it's no bigger than a large watch or some jewelry, which last time I checked, no one was told to take off their watches or jewelry on a ride.

I am glad that a Carowinds PR rep comes on to this site and helps out with questions like this. While I'm asking questions, what about the water rides like in Boomerang Bay?

Guys, if you want all these POV's so bad, how about you ask the park to film them. They filmed Intimidator for us right before it opened, there is one's of Afterburn and Thunder Road on their Facebook page. I'm sure that they would love to hear your POV suggestions, and possibly even do some. And in return, you can just enjoy the rides while your at the park instead of breaking rules that could get you kicked out of the park, or worse...you could get your season pass revoked and end up sitting at home watching POV's the entire season, wishing you could actually be riding...
