General Carowinds discussion

I went to the beach all this week and while i was down there i took a trip to the pavilion to ride HURRICANE. The coaster was excellent. No seatbelts on this woodie. I dont understand why the supports are steel....i guess just for stronger support. Does anyone have any pictures of this coaster. Carowinds needs a coaster like this its better than anything at carowinds....except borg of course

It was rougher than Hell when I rode it last summer. I'd never trade any of our woodies for that piece of crap. Swamp Fox is much better :)

Some wooden coasters use steel supports because their owners are too cheap to maintain a REAL wooden coaster. (But in the MB Pavilion's case, sea water would probably not be to good on the wooden supports anyway)

While the ride is the same because the tracks are made out of wood, I, being the stubborn person that I am, think that a wooden coaster should have a wooden structure. <_<

Better ride it while you can though. The Pavilion may be moving soon! (And Hard Rock Park is going to be on top down there pretty soon as well!)

Eh this isn't exactly a Carowinds topic, but since it is in this region I'll allow it. B) Also, since I'm going back down there in two weeks, how smooth was it? Did you notice if they had put any new wood down?

Of course, the real great coaster at Myrtle Beach is the Swamp Fox. B)

Found some SAD news regarding the Pavilion:

Isn't Broadway at the Beach enough tacky shopping? Damn retail centers. They killed Opryland USA as well. :(

Uh....What about TopGun? No way is it better than TopGun! If the Hurricane is riding like it did in it's first couple of seasons, then I would take it over any of our woodies. Here latley (last year especially) though it's been a little to rough.

Holy WHOOTAH. I will be going down in two weeks also. I bet we can meet and ride some of those coasters down there. O wait. I am already meeting you there.

Maybe the wild man from Spring Fling will make an appearance.

Website of opening day pictures 2000.

<a href='http://members.aol.com/y2coasters/hurricane.html' target='_blank'>HURRICANE OPENING DAY</a>

When I rode Hurricane opening day in 2000 and it was OK. Kinda sluggish, but that is to be expected of a new woodie. Over the next couple months and years it really picked up speed. Night rides were incredible! But then, disaster hit in 2003. I rode it back in Oct. 03. Last operating day for the Pavilion. I hopped in the backseat assuming I would enjoy it as usual. The coaster nearly cracked my spine. In fact, many people were complaining. We finished the evening off with front seat rides which were much more tolerable. An unmaintained woodie, rides like a 60mph steamroller on a pothole filled highway. Pavilion has no idea how to maintain this ride. And I got this from someone who worked on this ride. . I'll be anxiously awaiting your report Jonathan. Especially since you can compare the roughness to '03. I really hope they have given this baby some TLC over the winter. It's waaay too young a ride to be in such poor shape.

Actually, I haven't been on it since 2001, but yeah, I heard it was running horrid last year. There were two major potholes when I rode in 2001, but it was still a good ride. I'll be crossing my fingers this time.

As a former Myrtle Beach resident of 20 years I was glad they finally got a big woodie but at the same time hold alot of anomosity towards the C&B company. I had always liked the Pavillion untill several years back when they were threatening the local Government that they would close it down if certain things weren't done to their satisfaction. I won't go into any detail on it but I hope they do shut down the Pavillion and finally get the big park they have talked about since the base was shut down.

I wanted to ride Hurricane every time I went but was actually afraid of the maintenance of it. They do a decent job on the flats they have but a big woodie is a different story.

I lived on 29th Ave when it was all woods and got to see Broadway being built and the Lowe's. Honestly I liked walking around Broadway and going to the movies there but the best thing was living in those apartments I got to sit on my porch and watch the huge firework show in July.

As much as I would like to agree with you I just cant do it. I grew up going to that park every summer. It will be a major blow to my personal feelings if this does in fact happen. There are just to many memories there. On the other hand it may be worth a big park to be added. I will be 21 monday so the theme park will be the least on my mind :D .

I didnt think it was rough at all. It was just something different than thunder road and hurler. I dont ever get to go to any othere amusement parks sooo it was a change for me. Is swamp fox that white coaster at family kingdom or whatever? I started to go ride it to but ill save it for summer =) I like how the pavilion is free and pay per ride. $5 isnt all that bad to ride hurricane. Oh well ill definately be going back to ride it in may!

Yes, it's the TRUE wooden coaster in Myrtle Beach. By all means ride it! You'll love the comfy trains with those single lap bars (see my avatar). Plus, it's just a great coaster. The view going over the lift is incredible. You haven't been to Myrtle Beach until you've ridden the Swamp Fox. It delivers a GREAT front and back seat ride, unlike many woodies.

The park is also free entry, pay per ride (unless they've changed it from last year). You can also by wrist band.
