It was announced that Plaza Fiesta will be tore down. They will be tearing it down to build a Cabela's Outdoor Sports store.
This is from The Rock Hill Herald. Cabela’s, a major outdoors retail shop, will tear down Plaza Fiesta and build a 97,500-square-foot store, company officials announced Wednesday.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2014 and Cabela’s anticipates a spring 2015 opening. It will be Cabela’s second store in South Carolina, joining a Greenville location scheduled to open in spring 2014.

2015 will be interesting, with the new 300' coaster and the massive Cabela's opening.
I for one am happy to see the old mall go. Not so happy about the extra traffic during park season. These Cabela stores are tourist attractions in themselves.

Honestly I hate seeing it go. I usually take my kids to the arcade and the giant jungle gym. We also make trips to the food court during our visits to carowinds. I wasn't aware that towns, and cities were throwing so much money for these types of stores.

I don't know how I feel about this. I just wish carowinds would have purchased all the land including fiesta plaza. I"ve never been a fan of that place anyway IMO. Why not build this new outlet next to the fireworks warehouse on the other side of 77 and use the fiesta land for park expansion and buy out the comfort in and renovate it into a cedar fair type resort hotel? I digress lol

Right, gun-related crimes will certainly skyrocket because two dozen hunting rifles, in locked glass cases, behind the sales desk, being monitored 24/7 by CC security cameras, could result only in heinous crimes in the Cabelas parking lot.

I find it hard to believe that everyone here is not united in support of this Cabela's expansion. Bringing such a heightened state of economic growth potential to the Carowinds site is nothing but fantastic. If you want a destination park, you want this. This is great news.

like I said in another post. The building has been poorly maintained. It was kinda falling apart. They probably figure it was going to cost almost the same to fix it/upgrade etc then it would be to just build a new building

I can hear the family now driving up I-77 and coming to Charlotte for the first time.

Son 'Daddy I think I see part of a red roller coaster track peaking out over there. What is the name of that amusement park?

Daddy "Son don't you see that big a$$ sign over there, the name of that park is Cabela's."

Son "Oh, well can we stop?"

Daddy "No, I've never heard of park called Cabela's, so it much not be much. We will keep driving until we get to King Dominion. With a big sign like theirs, it must be a destination park.

Son "Weeeeeee, Kings Dominion, Kings Dominion, Kings Dominion."

Well only part of my wish came true on this. I want Plaza Fiesta torn down, which is happening. Next I want Carowinds to own it, which they are not. Then I want a big Carowinds sign erected, which is not happening. All I'm getting is a sign that says "Cabela's". Well, at least I have not pulled out an art program and started drawing coasters. It's a long winter.
