General Carowinds discussion

I've been an active "Coaster Enthusiast", now more commonly referred to as "Coaster Geek", since about 2003. I'm not suggesting any bad connotation on the latter term, on the contrary, I wear my geekdom with pride anytime I find myself conversing with non-coaster peeps about my favorite park or my latest trip to take repeated rides on my favorite rides/coasters. I do find "Enthusiast" to be a bit stuffy and like "Geek" much better as a descriptor. "Enthusiast" just seems so ostentatious. I have always enjoyed roller coasters and rode many when I was younger before I became a full-fledged "Geek". When I look back on my last 10 years of fandom, my reflection is filled with great memories of experiencing world class rides with great friends; All the while learning more and more with each trip and each ride. I've never wanted to dive too deeply, too much into the mire of manufacturers and designers and statistics but have learned a lot about each none-the-less. I have also witnessed the birth of the severe fanaticism that has grown in the online world for all things park and coaster related during this time. The fan community has a veracious appetite for any and all information about the latest coaster or park entity being built, moved, reconfigured, etc. "Carowinds Connection" itself is a living time capsule of that fanaticism expressed in great detail throughout its message boards. While I can see the value in sharing some ideas and feelings about our home park, Carowinds , sometimes I wonder if it's all too much.

There has been a enormous amount of ongoing discussion related to the new coaster that will be arriving in the park in 2015. Literally hundreds of thread posts have been submitted on this site over many months discussing and re-discussing it. Pictures, documents and speculative meanderings litter the boards as those that are posting assert their supposed knowledge on all that is happening with the park. It's as though the most important aspect to getting a new ride is not to actually experience it and ride it but to know everything about it before a single piece of dirt is moved. Am I interested in the new coaster and what it could be? Absolutely! However, the endless speculation and frankly, misinformation that is constantly spewed across the boards does nothing to heighten my personal excitement for the ride. Speaking about myself, A big part of the joy of experiencing a ride for the first time is to approach it with some mystery, some unknowns. I submit to you that there is as much to be appreciated in not knowing so much about a ride as knowing everything about it. I purposely go out of my way to avoid the constant stream of information about new rides and park changes, especially coasters. "Why?", you might ask? Because I want to feel that same thrill that comes over me each time I drive over the crest of the road and see the lift hill off in the distance for the first time. That feeling of awe when the announcement day comes and the park has it's chance to show me something new, something spectacular that I've never seen before! That feeling of approaching the station with everything a new exhilaration. We live in an age where so much information is available instantly for our consumption and as soon as someone, anyone has information about an upcoming ride, its immediately posted and available. When you know too much about a thing, sometimes it's no longer interesting, no longer exciting, no longer...magic.

I'm not naive. I realize that as long as there is something unknown about a new change to the park, there will be a ravenous drive by many to know all they can as soon as possible. I have to fight the urge myself before taking a moment to weigh the personal consequences. I submit to you that you might want to take a moment and consider whether it all goes a bit too far at times. Sometimes it can take some of the fun out of the whole experience. Some wear a badge of pride in arriving on opening day knowing all there is about a new coaster as they board the train. As for me, when that moment comes, I will experience it as a wholly new experience. The ride will come FIRST and THEN I will learn all I can about the details of the ride going forward.

Until that time and until that moment, in all honesty.... I don't want to know.

TL; DR.

EDIT:

Alright, I read it. I agree with the majority of your points, but I doubt you will find traction among the audience that a site like this tends to draw.

Maybe someone with an opposing viewpoint can post why they feel obligated to know every little piece of information before the ride is announced? Why isn't just holding tight until August 21st good enough?

It is a lot like the presents under the christmas tree...you've got the kids who will shake it, smell it, everything they can to try to figure out what is inside, even sneak a peek at night when the parents are asleep....then there are the children who are completely content just looking at the wrapped package sitting there with no idea of what is inside

...and that right there is part of the problem. This generation is all about right NOW! They don't have time to read entire news articles when they can just glance at the headline, for example.

This website pretty much exists primarily to do exactly what you are saying. I created it in 2003 so people would have somewhere to speculate and share construction updates about what turned out to be Borg/Nighthawk. This place is more or less a ghost town when there isn't some big project like this coming up on the horizon. There have been a few times over the years where I thought it was almost completely dead. If you don't want to know then don't read the threads. :silent: Personally, I've really enjoyed all of the rumors, speculation, teasers, etc. and it's breathed new life into this forum. It hasn't been this active ever. Heck, even I had stopped coming here at one point (let's face it, living in New York there's not much reason for me to take interest in Carowinds anymore, but I certainly am now), but now I can't wait to read the thread every day.

Don't be the guy who goes into a casino and is horrified that people are gambling there.

As far as I'm concerned a great ride, like a great movie or a great song, is not spoiled once you already know what happens, and is often even better.

I have been in this game for decades and I appreciate this site. Over the years I have participated in many fan sites. Ultimate Rollercoaster, Rec.Rollercaster, and a host of others I can't even remember. But while on those other sites, I have always felt like a step child. Few folk wanted to talk about Carowinds. Many had never been to the park, and did not care to visit. It was terrible being on those sites. There were times I would do a search through the archives to see if anyone mentioned the word 'Carowinds' in a post. I can't explain how happy I was when someone gave us a positive review. Frankly the excitement just did not exist for Carowinds, like it does for BGW and KD, and now Dollywood. Once I stumbled upon this site, though it was a small community, it felt like home.

But now is a new era. I notice now people come to this site who are not from the Carolinas. On Theme Park Review, many folk in the Carowinds thread, are also not from the region. What has been really strange to me is the fact that a lot of Virginia people are now planning to come to Carowinds next season for the first time because of this new coaster. It's strange because, they are so close, yet they never visited us. Most of us here in the Carolinas have been to the Virginia parks. I've always chalked it up to location, meaning being on I-77, as opposed to I-85. Who knows? Anyway it is a great day for me, an old Carowinds fan who has suffered in the shadows for many years hoping to get noticed. I never could have imagined Intimidator would just be the start. I thank the coaster gods every single day that Paramount sold us, and someone else came in with a different vision and saw that we were a diamond in the rough and had potential.

I've been on this site for almost a year and what I've found is that its not for entertainment. I understand that we want to stay on task but come on. Jonathan has made fun of me and it was funny, I respectfully hear him from his experience but at the same time feel he is holding on to something I dont agree with. Nonetheless he alowes me to express myself whether its silly or sophomoric. I revel in being dumb for amusement. But ive loved this park since the 80's when my bro came back from a visit and told me about White Lighting and the (Open Bucket) ha ha, we were kids. Anyways Ive loved this park since I've loved Hulkamania in 84 when I went to kindergarten with his lunchbox. Hopefully it will make us feel like kids again instead of screwing up everybody's good time. Thats my two cents. Take it for what its worth.

Nothing but discontent for these idiots ruining everybody's good time. Anyways Ive loved this park since I've loved Hulkamania in 84 when I went to kindergarten with his lunchbox. There are definitely some anti-fun/joking people on here but I guess they are just more business-like. I am more of the sarcastic joking type, but apparently that breaks the code of conduct.

I have no issues with Alan's position. I get it. When an announcement comes that I totally wasn't expecting, it's always fun.

What I take issue with here is the silly nonsense. Obviously it isn't my site and Jonathan, while offering a different opinion, never tells me "you can't feel that way or say that here", which I appreciate.

The silliness that I'm talkng about is obvious grabs for attention while being juvenile and not funny.

And trust me, some of the people y'all probably think are all business and not funny are quite hilarious. I know max, Jon, jay, wormy, Alan, jarsh, coasterbruh, and quite a few more.

Some of us are just seasoned. Heck, some of us as just old *coughAlancough*.

Then there's the refusal to accept when people know something and share it. Or at least know enough to give an educated guess.

Some of y'all need to stop looking gift horses in the mouth.

Ultimately I like It here and have been here quite a while so don't expect me to change till I'm forced to :-).

Of course they are funny, I know their sense of humor. Its just that I'm not quite as serious about "code of conduct" and stuff. Of course I respect it but some members tend to overdo it, which I am not quite as stern about.
