General Carowinds discussion

Carowinds went to Charlotte asking for tax incentives that are reportedly worth nearly 1 million a year for three years. My understanding isn't that Carowinds is getting money from them, but rather that Carowinds won't have to pay them any taxes for the next three years effectively saving them around $3 mil.

BTW, that happens all the time all over the place. Cities/counties/areas give tax incentives for businesses to open in their area and bring jobs. It's not cash they pay out to those businesses but rather the lack of local taxes - sales taxes, property taxes, etc that the businesses have to pay.

I wouldn't surprise me to hear the local news report the information incorrectly. They do it all the time.

They will pay taxes, but I believe the tax credit is effectively the same as the increase in taxes that they will pay after spending the $50 million. So for three years the park will basically be paying taxes as though it had not invested the $50 million, but will start paying the higher rate after 3 years. The political theory behind it would be that, if you believe that the park would not make the investment without incentives (which is dubious), it's a gain for the city after the 3 years is up.

Correct, they will save $3 mil that they don't have to pay in taxes for 3 years (which started this year IIRC). I guess I should have said 'reduction in taxes' and not 'lack of taxes.' No matter how you look at it they will be paying $3 mil less in taxes for a short while that Char/Meck expects to make back in the long run with more jobs, more tourists, etc.

Thanks for the breakdown on that pproteinc. I live in Union county so I don't pay close attention to how the breakdown is between city/county taxes in Char-Meck.

Nope...I was just at kings island two days ago...funny thing, I was in the communications office and they were just saying its down for the season...then some one was like no its cone completely gone. Apparently the part for it has to come from over seas. I dunno why they dismantled the ride completely...but I don't think its gonna come to carowinds. This is the troika we're talking about right?

I apologize ahead of time for this but I wanted to throw something together to give an idea of what the new toll plaza and entrance will roughly look like based on the leaked blue prints. Gives a good idea how far out they may bring the entrance from the plantation house.

No need to apologize. Thank you for putting that together. That is also what I pictured the front looking like based on all the information we have had up to this point.
