General Carowinds discussion

I think Carowinds is a whole lot better than PKD. I just think Carowinds has a better atmosphere, layout, and rides. If someone tells me that PKD is better... then good for them and I'm glad they feel that way. We all have our opinions. B)

Well, PKD is no gem and the park is no where near layout and beauty of say Busch Gardens, but they do get props for innovative rides. Although many new generations have spawned that are leagues better, PKD was one of the first parks with a stand up, a trackless, an underwater, a 90 degree hill and drop, and several other concepts. Sure, most of their coasters are small and some are tame compared to current standards, but they do try to bring innovation to the table before everyone else. That says something. :)

PKD is a slow park. Carowinds has better coasters and scenery. All they have is that hyper-sonic coaster.

I really don't understand all the negativity against PKD in the past few posts. Its not that bad of a park! Let me comment on a few of the past posts:

"Its a slow park"---Huh? Explain that one to me. According to 44 when he went, there were "amazing masses of people" there. Doesn't sound slow to me. And there is a lot more to the park than that "hyper-sonic coaster."

To me, no park is even close to being as beautiful as Busch Gardens. That's like comparing apples and oranges. I'm still trying to figure out what their "trackless" coaster is. I wouldn't say Anaconda is an underwater coaster just because it has a tunnel that goes underwater. Saying their coasters is fairly small is redundant. You could say the same things about Carowinds coasters!

As far as coasters go, I'd rather ride Volcano, FOF, and the Grizzly over many of the coasters at Carowinds. Anaconda and Shockwave doesn't do much for me. Thunder Road and Rebel Yell are nearly the same. Carowinds Hurler has always been the better one. HXLC is just a one trick pony. I haven't been on their Ricochet so I can't judge on it.

Both parks have about the same atmosphere. I'll give the edge to PKD for atmosphere during their Halloween event. It was downright spooky.

There is something that I like about every Paramount Park. Granted none of them are picture perfect but I've always had a great time at the ones that I've been to.

^ After much thought, I think he must be referring to Avalanche as a trackless coaster. I've been to Carowinds, Kings Island, and Kings Dominion, and before I would always say Carowinds was my clear favorite, but I had a really good time at Kings Dominion last time I went, and I almost want to give it the nod. I agree with what you say though; they all have their own little differences, and they are all very fun parks to visit. Top Gun is my favorite coaster of the three parks, but I like Volcano, Flight of Fear, and Grizzly better than anything else at Carowinds.

Flight of fear - The coaster of the stars!! (well me atleast, But I am a star in some retrospect B) )

If that was the only coaster they had they will still get me in there!!!

Jarvis.............who would replace BORG for FOF, and will do some heavy thinking on replacing TG for Volcano, on second thought Nah just give me FOF!!

I hadn't thought of Avalanche. I always seem to forget that coaster.

Before the removal of the OTSRs on FOF, I use to hate that coaster. But, after they modified the trains, I love FOF now. Its amazing how much of a difference it made in the ride. I still prefer the PKI version because they don't have on the midcourse brake as hard as PKI. Even with that, they're still both fun to ride.

I still believe if they changed the trains on SOB, it might become a better ride. As much as I want to like that ride, I can't right now in its present state.

One of the biggest faults that I have with PKD is all the removal of the trees around Grizzly. Before they took out the trees, a night ride on Grizzly was almost on par with the Raven at night. Pitch dark atmosphere. It was a wild run in the dark. Its still a fun ride at night but not like it use to be.

Yea I definitely thought Grizzly was amazing. Ive never been on a coaster so crammed with trees, it was great. And to think it used to have more!!

I wasn't trying to be so negative, I was trying to counter with some great positives of PKD that I think many younger fans overlook and don't even realize why the rides were great at the time they were introduced.

Well, Busch Gardens scenery is not fair, but is the bar to strive for... still that's ok. I was simply trying to say what you did... most parks cannot hope to have that level of scenery. So I wasn't knocking PKD for it, simply references from a post before mine saying how bad PKD scenery was. I was meaning that is not a good factor for most parks, rather it should be on cleanliness and organization rather than landscaping and heavy themes.

Yes, Avalanche is what I was calling a trackless coaster (at least in the traditional sense - for lack of a better word). Anaconda certainly qualifies as "underwater", give me a better example. It's Innovative - that was the key... PKD does bring experimental coasters to riders (whether the feature seems major or not).

My coasters being small comment is way deeper than Carowinds to PKD. The cost factor plays heavily into this. PKD has been building highly unique for the time coasters in it's park. Obviously you can't built a long coaster if it's new and experimental technology. Does anything think twice about a long Stand up coaster today -- no. But when Shockwave was introduced, it was new stuff and expensive to build. It's short, but PKD was the first to give us that chance to stand on a coaster and the lines then showed it's appeal. Up to the Tower on most days. Now, it's line stays fairly long but nothing like XLC. Who doesn't think XLC is extremly short? But currently it is a new thrill very few offer. SOmeday, we will have long tracks and loops in coasters like this (or the next incarnation) and the lines at PKD will die.

So, I wasn't trying to bash PKD, rather give it credit for what it brings to the Paramount Experience.

My Paramount Gem would be Carowinds because it offers cleanliness, nice variety, moderate crowds, good weather, and nice variety of food and games. Plus the admission specials are usually great.

To me, PKI is alot better than PC, and PKD seems to be a mix of the two. I can't comment much on the coasters at PKD because when the one time i went to PKD, both Volcano and Hypersonic were broken. At least we got in free with season passes. They were giving people tickets to come back another day because of this. We just chose the WRONG day to visit. I will need to ride Volcano and hypersonic before I can decide whether I like PC or PKD is better.

PKD has 3 great roller coasters:

Hypersonic XLC
Volcano
Flight of Fear

compare those 3 to our 2 great coasters

Top Gun
Borg

woodies are about the same but PKD has Grizzly to our Gold Rusher, nod to Grizzly

secondary coasters: Cyclone to PKD's Anaconda, nod to Anaconda here

we have Super Saturator and PKD has the Avalanche, i'd put these 2 as even although they are not similar

PKD wins on coasters alone

PKD better Drop Zone
PKD better theming and landscaping
PKD more attractions for kids

Thunder Road, Taxi Jam, Hurler, Ricochet, Vortex. They make-up for everything. Carowinds has Kings Dominion beat, Hypersonic and Volcano are pieces of crap, they are short and borning.

I can say pkd is ahead of us on the coaster scale. Carowinds is coming right behind them.

PKI is the Gem. Probaly will forever be.

RollerNut - FYI, Thunder Road almost identical to Rebel Yell, Taxi Jam identical to Taxi Jam, Hurler identical to Hurler, Ricochet better at PKD than Carowinds, both stand ups are bad coasters. Shockwave is a better ride but has a terrible load time and Vortex is a head banger.

Your post is out of line and screams of serious smack.
