I think it was just left fenced off after construction finished last season.
I am back from Carowinds Connection Time-Out!

Devin Olson, who has been around COASTER-net for a long time, has been shooting documentary of Fury 325 this past week. He specifically mentioned in a Facebook post that the park had hinted/mentioned a conversion during Media Day in addition to their statement regarding a big 'splash'.
I had seen that Conference Call you just mentioned, and figured the two may be related. In addition to the removal of SkyRider, I agree that Cedar Fair seems to be phasing out their collection of stand-up roller coasters. Shockwave I suppose may be the next stand-up to be removed outright while Vortex at Carowinds and Vortex at CGA are candidates for new floorless rolling stock.
I also saw those Screamscape rumors about Thunder Road, and purposefully didn't say much because it doesn't make much sense to me. I have pondered whether or not Thunder Road could be a candidate for said 'conversion', but Carowinds just invested a great deal or time, effort, and money into completely reconstructing the entire roller coasters from the ground up. The project has happened in sections over the past four or five off-seasons. I believe GCI was contracted for this project in addition to retracking and reprofiling parts of Hurler prior to the 2014 season.
