General Carowinds discussion
#75080
I'm not sure if this is an appropriate thread for this but here goes.

I attended opening day on Saturday and got lots of video. I filmed nearly 6 hours of video including the ride to and from the park. I am in the process of uploading all of the video. Here are parts 1-3. Sadly it's not HD because it would take forever to upload (20 hours or more), but the color is enhanced to make up for that.
Part 1 is of our trip to the park
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFM_LW9mi5M

Part 2 is the arrival to the park and the start to our day.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuDMXxeV-v8

Part 3 is just yeah, we ride coasters and freeze to death.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1noCch9mCqA

I'll have parts 4 & 5 up by morning. and the last part will be up by friday morning.

Never fails everytime I come to carowinds I run into Edwardo lol

Looks like they updated the carowinds phone app. It looks a heck of a lot better. I don't know how I feel about the atmosphere music yet.

I didn't even pay attention to the music in the park. However I did notice that FunTV had a better mix of music than year except at Fury(looks like the weird hip music from last season). I was waiting to see Love Shack on FunTV.

FSUTRIPP wrote:Ok, went to Carowinds after work yesterday for the first time season. Went straght from work uptown and had to deal with horrible traffic from I-77. After taking about 40 minutes to get to the park it was all Fury plus some Intimidator. I was able to ride 3 times on Fury, plus get dinner (dinning pass), and even managed a ride on Intimidator. Let me start with Fury 325, there is no other way to say it then simply Amazing. I mean it litterly has everything all into one coaster. Honestly I know everyone has different preferences (TPR enthusiasts), but it really baffles me someone could not be blown away. It has speed, airtime, forcefulness, and the largest drop on a traiditional roller coaster in the entire world. It really is a great coaster and I really appreciate Carowinds and B&M for going outside the box with this one and hope they don't create another one like it. Also the new entrance was great as well.

Now for two rather big complaints, this has nothing to do with the ride and something I hope Carowinds will take care of rather quickly. First being the motor of the lift, it is loud as can be in line. All they need to do is have the fence higher so the sound can bounce off in the other direction. It truly was giving us a headache everytime it would turn on, I heard about ten peolpe saying the same thing. They could also put more TV's with speakers for everyone as well IMO, one speaker is behind the fence causeing you to not be able to hear it. The next complaint is the loud howling (train) noise on the turn pulling into the station. I have never heard that on any other ride and it is straight obnoxious especially under the lockers. I dont get how a 30 Millions dollar coaster can make that noise and just seems damaging. B&M should be doing whatever it takes to fix that. These are not huge things but they do have a big impact for experience for the GP and I really hope they fix those things ASAP.

Thanks for reading and any insight would be awsome. Also a question I have always had, why do Cedar Fair parks not have wait times at the begining of lines at their parks? I love that feature at parks.

Great to read your review and complaints. As soon as I read about the loud shriek as the train enters the station, I remember hearing that on one of the POV's and I thought it sounded terrible. What is that and why? Hopefully they can correct that whatever it is. I haven't heard the lift hill noise because obviously I've yet to go there to ride it because I'm so far away.

I've noticed that that shriek happens on a few B&M's. It happened on Intimidator a few times. As to what it is? I think that it is the transport wheels on that curve. The train is traveling faster than the rubber wheels are turning and it's making it squeal like that. I've noticed that when it happens on Intimidator, it is only on the curve turning into the station.
This is my only guess.

I concur with Amos about that. I think of it kind of like a train in a tight curve. The cars go around that pretty fast and they aren't really designed for long, flat turns. I noticed the squeal, and I'm sure it's perfectly normal.

My theory on the squealing wheels on the curve:

The concave train wheels (the main, big ones) ride on the rails and make contact on the whole upper surface of the rails. When the rail curves and it is flat, there are longer and shorter arcs on that rail, around the curve (red is longest, blue is shortest, green is somewhere between). A wheel can only spin at one speed at a time. So one single wheel, would need to cover three separate distances, while only spinning at one speed*. That's impossible. So there must be some slippage occuring when the rubber hits the rails. So, if for example the wheel rolled at the correct speed along for the green arc, there would be some slippage along the red arc, because the wheel is doesn't turn enough times to cover the additional distance of the red arc. There would also be some slippage along the blue arc, because the wheel spins too many times for the shorter distance of the blue arc.

Slippage of some of the rubber on the rails = squealing

*There aren't just 3 arcs. There's an infinite number of arcs. I just used three to make the image. I could have drawn many more arcs with many more colors. And this picture just represents one of the rails. The wheels are probably squealing on both rails.

I would agree to this theory. But each and every wheel is on its own individual axis. One side is not spinning at the same speed as the other. I still think that this is very normal and that there's nothing to worry about. It is interesting though.

TONITE was a good Nite! Glad that secret handshake works ;-).

Got three rides in. This coaster is amazing. I was with 7 other (very seasoned for the most part) geeks, and they all loved it. I'll let Homey G chime in if he's do inclined.

Wonderland used to have a sign at the start of Behemoth's queue with wait time options of 30 min., 1 hour, 90 min., and 2 hours (I think those were all right). The problem? It was never anywhere except 30 min. because the line moved so fast! Especially now that they have greeters at the front of the lines you can ask, and Fast Lane which can change the length of your wait, it doesn't make much sense to have them for most rides.

kirkgun wrote:The ride crews were not at all pushing for maximum capacity. I have no complaints about that, it was just an observation of how they were operating.

I have noticed that as well. At first I was really wondering why they weren't full capacity and was a bit disappointed, but after watching a while I realized that it seems they can get them out faster and keep things flowing if they aren't having to deal with people trying to ride next to friends and groups staying together, etc. They fill it as fast and easily as they can, lock it down, send it out. The line for Fury really moves fast and that crew working up there is awesome!

I really hope that Carowinds management read these, but they really need to know how great that Fury crew has been. The three days I have been there, they have been busy, but still smiling, still having fun and making "seat assigning" easy and enjoyable. I have fallen in love with Miss Eunice. On media day she was at the start of the line greeting everyone and she laughed at me every time I ran by to ride again. I told her I was going to take her on the ride with me one day and she just giggles at me. The last couple days she has been assigning seats and she doesn't play, but people respect her and she is having fun at her job. She rocks!

On Monday, there was a younger girl working the back of the train on the boarding side. I was waiting to board and told her something smelled really good and she looked at me and laughed. "That's Juke Box and they tease me all day with that good food."

All I'm saying is that the crew is amazing and I have not had a single person be rude or unprofessional.

Miss Eunice is Awesome!!!

So unrelated for a minute, but some of you guys keep mentioning the best way to meet up. Just a thought, I noticed on the new Carowinds App (which I'm sure others have too) that you can get a personalized pin and give it out to friend people and it shows you when they're in the park. I thought that was pretty nifty. Kind of like BBM only with mapping.
