General Carowinds discussion

Nighthawk is not a good ride, and nothing is going to change that. Because what stinks about Nighthawk is the track is not a fun track. And the waiting time makes that fact all the more apparent, when it is done. Not having a fun track makes the ride un-fixable. But as far as I see it, it does has two redeeming qualities.

1. It simply looks cool. It has a nice paint job. It's in a great environment. It draws a lot of people.
2. Lots of people stand in line for it, for really long periods of time. This makes lines on other rides shorter.

Vortex on the other hand, sucks. I rode it once yesterday, and I might be done with it for the season. I know many people have an emotional attachment to it, because it's been there for a long time. But if they installed that thing at the same time as Nighthawk, your aching head would not make excuses for it out of nostalgia. And what really stinks about vortex sucking (see what I did), is that Vortex could be fixed. Unlike Nighthawk, the track is not the problem with Vortex. It could be a fun little ride to do while walking across the park to the better ones. It certainly could be a fun and positive experience for riders. For regulars at Carowinds, doing that would probably do the most to improve the line-up of coasters for the least amount of money. But it's not a marketable investment...

Come to Carowinds for 2016! Our 20 year old ride, Vortex, doesn't bash your brains against the inside of your skull anymore! And our ride operators don't need to lock and unlock the train a dozen times before each dispatch, vastly improving capacity!

It just doesn't make a good commercial, despite being a considerable and affordable improvement to the park's ride line-up. It just doesn't make a compelling marketing campaign.

So, they'll probably keep building new rides. And at some point, they'll claim that some of the older ones can't be fixed anymore and tear them out, to build new rides that they can make compelling commercials for.

My vote is a compelling commercial for a brand new RMC (and a free squirt gun to make the "big splash").

I do believe I better stay away from the CP fansites.

Mean Streak is easily the most violent and aggressively unpleasant ride I have ever been on.

Not trying to get too off subject, but has anyone else ridden Gouderix? Easily the worst ride on the planet (by a considerable margin) when I rode it in 2011. Even worse than Ninja, Mean Streak, etc.

I don't like Nighthawk and Vortex because they both have long wait times and relatively short rides. It doesn't help that they are uncomfortable to ride. Nighthawk is the only coaster I didn't ride last year.

I like Cobra, especially the backwards part. I found it empty one morning last year and rode it 4 times in a row. This year I'm going to try each row.

When I rode Vortex on Saturday, it was cold and my ears banged against the harness. My ears were very sore after that ride and with it being cold didn't help any. Needless to say I didn't get back on it. But I still try to ride it at least once per visit (if the line is short).

Jay wrote:If Carowinds truly wants to become a "Cedar Point" quality park it can't have these off-the-shelf Vekoma rides for smaller parks. You would never catch a Boomerang at Cedar Point, so why give one to Carowinds? It's such great publicity when the ride vallies so much you have to have a permanent crane set up next to it. That land could be used so much better for one of the precious flat rides everyone around here begs for.

I have to agree with you on that one. I have ridden it twice and both times I came off feeling beaten and bruised. It is not a comfortable ride at all for me and I can't imagine it is a big draw for people. I can't remember what was there before Cobra showed up. Can someone please refresh my memory. Was it Blackbeard's Revenge?

It was Blackbeard's Revenge, then in 2000 Flying Super Saturator, which actually was unique although apparently an expensive and difficult one to maintain.

Thanks! I had forgotten all about Flyer Super Saturator.

I'm really not sure what I would want to see new in 2016. I'm a sucker for dark rides and high themed areas, but that isn't really Carowinds style and I get those things when I go to Disney or Universal...even BGW. I would like to see something really unique, but I don't think we will be getting anything too crazy after being blessed with Fury this year. I'm not complaining and I will probably be happy with about anything.

I was actually riding behind a friend who dislocated his shoulder on Mean Streak........not fun. Of course the ride continued ot beat him up until it popped back into place. :(

If they ever get rid of Cobra, I hope to god they send the trains with more comfortable restraints over to Carolina Cyclone! That would kill two birds with one stone and make Cyclone much more pleasant.

MY FANTASY THAT WILL SOLVE THE NIGHTHAWK, VORTEX, AND LAUNCH DILEMMAS:
As for Nighthawk, as I said I like it. I don't love it though, and I wouldn't cry if it were removed.

In it's place the 'first launched flying coaster' by B&M that flies over the midway and the water would be epic, IMO.

Move/Remove Vortex (honestly I don't care if it's historic if it could get something truly awesome in it's place) and this new B&M launched flyer will have more room for an awesome layout, since the rides occupy the same general area!

And while we are talking solutions to rides we tend to dislike...
Hurler is better but it's still far from a good ride and I think if anything does get RMC'd in the Cedar Fair chain, Mean Streak and the two Hurlers should be at the top of the list!! Make them have slightly different layouts and call them Alpha Hurler and Omega Hurler, or something cool/different like that. Keep restoring Thunder Road, give it new trains, and continue making it a great traditional wooden coaster!

Not trying to pick on you redrunner97, just giving my opinion and you were the last post.

As much as I love the idea of Cyclone getting new trains I don't see that happening. Cobra hasn't been around long and every time I see it there's a huge line.

Love the idea of removing Vortex but again I don't the GP sees it the same as us. As for Nighthawk I have no problem with it other than the capacity. I enjoy the ride, and although it may just be because I'm short, the restraints aren't that bad to me. Would I be sad to see it go? Yes, but if we're getting something better, i.e. Anything not Vekoma, I'd be fine with saying goodbye to Nighthawk.

Thunder Road could use a bit more re tracking but at least now it's ride able. As for Hurler, I think it could be a really good RMC conversion if they took out the longest "Out and Back" turn.

Just my opinions though...

If Hurler were to ever get an RMC (which I think is highly unlikely for now), I think that RMC would add a lot more of their own custom work to make the circuit last much longer. If I ever get time I'll create some computer models. I have some ideas up my sleeve.

Not trying to turn this into a wishlist thread, but IF Hurler were to get an RMC conversion, all I ask is that they give it Medusa's drop.

I agree, Hurler could be much more than it is. Steel Medusa's drop would be perfect for Hurler. I would also like to see an updated version of Drachon Fire's "cutback" inversion. Did I get the name right? I think it would go well on turn 3(turn 1 as some people call it here).

Actually, every RMC conversion has had it's total track length shortened, and in all but one case, the lift hill slightly lifted/drop lowered, so if they were to come in, they won't be adding any track.
