General Carowinds discussion

I was going through a box of old pictures in my garage and I found a park guide/map from 1987. I didn't know White Lightnin was still there then.
The water park was just a wave pool and it was a separate admission from
the rest of the park. It also gave me an idea of where things used to be.
My kids and I had a good time looking at it. A season pass for a family of 4
was $99. Pretty cool. It is something I would want if I saw it on Ebay :P

I have seen some of those Vintage type items on E bay. Course they were Really Dirt Cheap. They had anything from Park Maps to Old Ride Photos. I wouldn't sell that map though.

That's pretty cool coastermom!

I have a large souvenir map (or should I say, my parents have one) from 1976. I got a hold of it and scanned it in, and put it on my website.

Note- These pics are Hi-Res and make take a while to load..

<a href='http://www.pbase.com/image/17752832/original' target='_blank'>Sections 1&2</a>
<a href='http://www.pbase.com/image/17752854/original' target='_blank'>Section 3</a>
<a href='http://www.pbase.com/image/17752862/original' target='_blank'>Section 4</a>
<a href='http://www.pbase.com/image/17752868/original' target='_blank'>Section 5</a>
<a href='http://www.pbase.com/image/17752876/original' target='_blank'>Section 6</a>
<a href='http://www.pbase.com/image/17752877/original' target='_blank'>Section 7</a>
<a href='http://www.pbase.com/image/17752882/original' target='_blank'>Section 8</a>

I'd like to put it all together, but haven't had the time or computing power..

Oh well, enjoy!

PS - It's not for sale. ;)

I thought the Carowinds RR was removed in 1975. Why is it on the 1976 map?

A few months ago there was a 1973 Carowinds map, press release, employee handbook, and postcard folder on Ebay. Too bad I'm currently suspended!

Yes, our beloved White Lightnin' was nearing it's end in 1987. It was removed after the 1988 season.

I remember the 1976 map. I know I had one. So I guess my first
visit to Carowinds was around then, because the first time I went,
ThunderRoad was built but it wasn't running yet.
I think I will look for that map next time I'm at my parent's house.
Thanks JamminJ for posting that for all to see.

It's probably a good idea to save the maps we have now (2004 and on). We can see later on how the park has shaped and how the BORG looked before it came apart. Whoops did I say that!?

Duke, the trains did stay through the 1976 season. I remember the crossing gate now. Yes, at one time I was also unsure whether the trains left at the end of 1975 or 1976. This map clears that up. Plus, I have since located an old postcard of the empty County Fair section the year Thunder Road opened and you can see the train along side the coaster

Hey Swampfox, when is C:TEY going to be updated?

^^I throw in bits of text updates frequently. Like whenever I get new info on dates and years that things closed. I don't really count it as a big enough update to advertise though.

My plan is to eventually scan a brochure from every year through 1984 and list them on the site. I will get motivated and just do it one of these weekends. I have plenty more old photos to share as well. Hopefully I will get it done before winter. :)

Is it possible that the train made it through the '77 season as well? Because in the 1977 brochure there is a picture of Melodia pulling into Plantation Square. (I thought that might have just been an oversight or something)

It took me a minute to find that picture but there it is! WOW! I never noticed that before. I was always too busy laughing at the picture of Magic Mt's Revolution they used to promote White Lightnin'.

Anyway, I'm almost positive the train wasn't there for 1977. I do not have a map of that year. I do have a 1978 map and it's definately not on that one. I'd love to put this mystery to rest one day. Let me know what you uncover Duke.

I've got a 73 or 74 map of Carowinds.

It doesn't say the date, but Scooby Doo is not on there, so I know it's not 1975.

I tried to take a digital picture, but it doesn't come out good enough to show.
