General Carowinds discussion

I'm still hoping for a Blackbeard theme, like him getting his revenge on the Carolinas or something along those lines. That'd be really cool, imo.

But on the topic of Goldrusher, I rode it the other week when I went and oh my god it hurt me. I had to contort (and spread) my leg to get the lab bar "all-the-way" down -it was awful. I wish they'd just flat out get new trains with MUCH simpler/easier/better restraints. I would ride it much more often if that were the case, since it's such a fun, relaxing ride.

And to touch on Goldrusher's capacity, the guy doing the restraint checking was trying to get them all done fast, but it's a lot of work for such a relatively tame ride. He repeatedly had to yell at the operator in the booth who was too busy talking to actually send the ride off. You could tell he was frustrated and was genuinely trying to make things move as fast as possible.

I said on In the Loop Live last night that if we get a dark ride (which I think we will very soon), it should be a pirate themed dark ride, since we used to have a "Pirate Island" several years ago...

Why did the Crypt close? Was the Giant Top Spin too expensive to maintain, or was it just not popular any more. I love Top Spins and wish Carowinds had one. Can we get the old one from KI and refurbish it?

I think it was quite costly to maintain, which is understandable, since even the normal sized ones are no picnic to keep running.

Both of those answers are exactly what Don Helbig told us at an ACE event there in the fall of 2011 - the ride was too costly to maintain and it was very difficult to get parts for it causing extended periods of downtime.

On a side note he also told me to let Carowinds know that he wants their flyers back since that's one of the best ride they had and lost. That started a fun little 'Twitter war' between Carowinds PR and KI PR.

Back on topic, from what I hear, WGM is a great successful dark ride. Once they announced putting something similar at Knott's, I had no doubt that they would eventually plan on putting one in most of the CF parks. It wouldn't surprise me if that was in the plans for 2017 here, assuming Fury and all the new changes do increase attendance by the 33% or so they are hoping for.

RollerBee wrote:Time Warp isn't a Vekoma Flying Coaster and came about after my point. Firehawk was relocated using old Paramount plans and Nighthawk was too.

You did not specify Vekoma Flying coaster, or a time period. Time Warp came out in 2004 when the park was still owned by Paramount under the name/theme Tomb Raider. Time Warp is a Zamperla Volare, which is a flying coaster, and the only flying coaster in Canada. The rest of what you said makes no sense.

Geauga Lake (a Six Flags park until bought by Cedar Fair in 2004) was never owned by Paramount, and the ride Firehawk (formerly Steel Venom) was only moved once that park closed. What you're saying is that Paramount was going to buy Firehawk from Cedar Fair, but didn't, and then once Cedar Fair bought the Paramount parks, they decided to move the coaster they previously did not sell to the place that wanted it originally because... they thought Paramount was on to something? I suppose in your mind the whole reason Geauga Lake closed was because Cedar Fair decided to move all the coasters there to other parks since the previous owners wanted them?

Nighthawk was moved during the Paramount years, so how could that have been an old Paramount plan? :wtf:

I know what I'm talking about, but I'm not sure you do.

Anyway, I do like the Blackbeard/pirate idea! That would be fun! Although, Cedar Point fans think that's what they're going to get, since they used to have a pirate themed dark ride. Only time will tell!

Normally I wouldn't step in to defend Roller, especially since he didn't specify what kind of flying coasters, but I did hear back in the day that Paramount was planning on multiple Flying Dutchmen at their parks. After Stealth didn't work the way they wanted, they didn't go thru with the rest, and Six Flags was rumored to have come thru on the two rides that ended up at their parks.

I think what he meant was that Nighthawk and Firehawk both ended up installed in the same spots in the park where Paramount had intended on installing them originally once they were moved to KI and Carowinds. I can't comment on that because I never heard that, but I had heard about Paramount wanting multiple Vekoma Flying Dutchmen.

Carowinds had one as well. It was a simulated dark ride called Blackbeard's Revenge that operated from 1985-1999. The floor/seats didn't move, but the walls spun around the floor giving the illusion that you were in motion. I really liked it. I think a Blackbeard themed ride will work great at Carowinds again. This is the Carolinas after all.

I agree as well. I miss Blackbeard's Revenge and have told my kids about it, as well as the other rides from my childhood that are gone. My only regret as a kid was I never got the courage to ride White Lightening before it was removed :(

I guess this might be more wish-listy, but I'd like to see a modern Vekoma madhouse version of Blackbeard's Revenge. Unlike the original Blackbeard's Revenge, with the Vekoma Madhouse the seating area actually moves as well. I've been on Fluch der Kassandra, Hex, and Houdini's Great Escape, and they were all so much fun. If Six Flags can pull it off well, then I know Cedar Fair can.

Ahhh, nostalgia. I loved this "ride" when I was little. Plus it was a great way to get out of the heat. Wasn't it in the back corner near where Carolina Cobra is now?
