I met Laresa (PR Manager) today and she was super nice and we had a chat about Taste of Carolinas.

I thought the idea is good, but it needs some tweaking in the execution.

I purchased $20 worth of samples so that gave me a choice of 5 different items I could try. Each booth had 4 or 5 items.

I felt that the sample sizes were good, mostly. The only one that I felt a bit cheated on was the ShooFly Pie. Too much crust and topping...not enough yummy molasses filling. I also sampled the Seafood Cocktail which was nice with crab, shrimp, peppers and fresh citrus juice. The Chicken over cabbage and beets was nice, however a bit of salt and pepper could have helped that. The fourth thing I tried today was the Jalepeno Pimento Cheese. That was nice and was great with a beer in a rocking chair at Harmony Hall.

I think the biggest problem they had today was the people that were supposed to be selling you on the tastings and getting you interested were young, bored kids that just stood there with the info in their hands. I stood near the info booth at Harmony Hall for a good while and the girl there just didn't seem interested. If someone stopped and talked with her, she would chat, but this is something new and they need the staff to be excited.

On that note, the people in the booths, while really nice, looked incredibly bored. I asked one person what their favorite offering was in their booth and her response was..."I don't know, we don't get to try nothing. What you want to try?" That was followed by an eye roll so I told her I thought I would try something in another booth.

They need to set up info in that new booth they built and aren't using by the new bridge and get someone really exciting to stand there and grab people as they come into the park. The signage is nice, but not sure having all the NC lumped in one area and SC lumped in another is good. I think if it was spread around the park it would be more effective and fun.

I don't feel as if I was cheated and i still have one sample left on my Taste of Carolinas card. The card is a good idea because you don't have to keep pulling your wallet out. They load your samples on a card and you just hand that to the cashier at each booth and they will subtract until you use it all up.

I thought that the booths were originally planned to be spread around the park anyway.

They weren't necessarily "spread" around the park. They were in front of Harmony Hall and next to Cobra.

Yeah, When I was there opening day, I wondered why they were all bunched up like that. Made no sense really.
Then again, we really shouldn't complain about it. It is new after all...

First of all, I'm excited for Taste of the Carolinas. I think it's something great and I hope it catches on. It might be hard to effectively market it at the same time trying to market Fury 325, etc.

When I first heard the concept, it was pitched that there would be booths spread around the park which made a lot of sense. That makes it visible to everybody all day long no matter where you are in the park.

I used to manage a restaurant many years ago and that is Restaurant 101. While everybody doesn't need free samples, the people working a specific booth should be allowed/required to sample each of the items. In a restaurant, how can a waiter provide excellent service and suggest items if he hasn't tasted anything? It also increases their motivation by feeling like they are a part of the event and not just a hired hand. Your observation seems like a big mistake in the execution and probably could have increased their sales yesterday.

Anyway, despite the rain, I'll head over to the park shortly to try and support Taste of the Carolinas. Hopefully they can get these issues worked out and have this become an annual event.

Have fun and enjoy the food. I hope I wasn't coming across too negatively as that was not the intention. I think this is an awesome idea and I want to see it work. I think it certainly has possibilities and it just needs a bit of tweaking. I would really like to see this take off.

I think one of the problems will be that if they receive any feedback from the GP, it will be negative. Most people won't take the time to tell them what was good and awesome. I think we here need to be positive and let them know what was wonderful and provide constructive criticism.

Not everything is going to be good and they know that.

Arby, I hope the rain isn't too bad because here in Lancaster right now, it is pretty awful!

Did anyone notice the one random actor that was just roaming around near Harmony Hall and pretending to clean the Taste of the Carolinas sign? She wasn't really saying much but she was still there. I only saw her once during the day and then when I came back, she was gone.

When I was there, she was dressed as "granny" and was sweeping the path and blocking people from walking by. It was really quite funny. This was about 4:30 or so.

I noticed Granny "cleaning" yesterday (Saturday). Enjoyed the way she interacted with guests. Hope Carowinds adds more interesting characters.

Has anyone tried the wine or beer samplings? Thinking of going to a wine sampling soon...

I didn't feel you were being too negative. The park does appreciate constructive criticism. I was just noting that I find this event intriguing and hope to help support them so we can see it continue to be offered.

Taste of the Carolinas was cancelled today due to the weather.

Because of the weather the parking lot looked like this. I am not exaggerating but there couldn't have been more than a few hundred of us in the park today.

I did notice that there were some Taste of the Carolinas booths back by Carolina Cobra, too, while some employees tried to dodge rain drops.

I liked the sign in the Carowinds Plaza.

I think the Cobra midway was a great place to put the booths although it would have been nice to have them spread around the park. The Cobra midway definitely has a lot of potential in terms of a flat ride I feel.

This is my thing. They way they have it now is the best way they can. If you have it spread around you would kinda want to have a way to purchase cards near each booth. Everyone doesn't get to go to every area of the park and lets face it, people are lazy and want everything in the same place. I think the way they have to grouped in north and south carolina is great. You can get a variety without having to hike to the next booth. Having them grouped means you can have two centralized communication spots vs multi if they were spread out.

There wasn't a Piedmont shown on the SC map on the sign and the landmarks on the sign above the booth were the Winston-Salem/Greensboro(Pilot Mountain for example) area plus Cobra is on there.

Are you sure it wasn't a Piedmont on the map?
