Wow! Still stunned at the news. TR is a great ride and it is still hard for me to believe that it will be gone. Part of me wants to believe there may be an upgrade for TR in store, but that's my optimistic side. TR has been great and whatever they plan on putting in that area can't beat the great times I've had racing my friends across the state line.

I know folks are saddened by the retirement of Thunder Road, for nostalgic and sentimental reasons. But I think its time has come. Despite the rehab in recent years, Thunder Road appears run down and dilapidated, and in dire need of a paint job. And it appears small in stature compared to the new huge coasters. And it does not have a national reputation as a signature wooden coaster, and is not a destination attraction. Plus there are the nearly identical versions at Kings Island and Kings Dominion, although who knows how long those may last as well. But Cedar Fair is all about major, big name attractions, and big rollercoasters. And apparently Thunder Road stands in the way for future expansion, and is too costly to maintain and repair. So it is finally time to retire. Sentiments aside, it is a business decision based upon long term return on investment for future growth. But hopefully more than just a water park expansion is planned in its place, as I don't think Cedar Fair wants to be losing ground in its coaster count at Carowinds. While an RMC hybrid treatment is doubtful, hopefully another coaster will eventually take its place. Or at least a good water coaster or flume ride. But eventually I want to see a huge launch coaster.

Indeed.

But there is something that could save it. If each of those 642 people that signed the petition, would instead send a signed (and valid!) check for $25,000. Well then, I'm sure management will be very happy to announce the rebuilding of Thunder Road tomorrow on facebook, and start hinting about where the new [s]log flume[/s] big splash will be built instead.

Money is what Thunder Road needs to save it. Absolutely nothing else can or will save it.

This is very true. As much as I love Thunder Road and will miss it, I have been suspecting it might go away after realizing that the last 3 days I rode it there were no more than 5 people on the train and the last time I rode it completely solo. I mean, very few people want to ride it because it doesn't flip you or twist you or terrify you. Its just a fun coaster that takes up too much space. Its signature is the racing aspect, which I don't even know if they try to do that much anymore.
So, little ridership means its not a park draw. And remember after all is said and done, money rules everything. Personally, I believe that a good portfolio of diverse coasters would make a better Roller-Coaster Mecca, but I am not running things. I wonder what this means to other CF classic coasters. If Thunder Road is on the chopping block then it's cousins and Blue Streak must be pretty close behind......

Did they? If that's true, then they probably quit when they realized they were going to tear it down.

I was assuming so because it runs pretty well until the brake run where it pretty much breaks your back.

I remember reading some where a week or so back, someone was going back and forward with roller explaining that at times...parks just don't want things but will put out a "politically correct" statement to keep relations cool. So basically, nothing can save TR at this point...it's basically in the way of the cedar fair future. As was the flume and the... :shh: :shh:
