General Carowinds discussion

But I really think they planned this poorly. They should have either given a more solid reason for removing it or gone ahead and announced or at least hinted at the replacement(s).

So "join us next year for a big splash as we roll into 2016" wasn't enough of a hint?

That doesn't help me. What splashes and rolls darnit!?

The GP is really giving me a laugh. Most are saying they won't return to Carowinds anymore because of this......so be it! Shorter lines on the new rides!

Then the GP will beg for it to be torn down like they have with Fury.

Larissa is escorting a WSOC crew in the TR station. WBTV has a crew filming the drop. I hope I don't get stuck, I'll be on the next train.

I hope they're just exaggerating because the park needs longer lines if we want Cedar Fair to keep investing in Carowinds.

I wasn't aware it had become a repeated problem. How many times has this happened? Still looking forward to riding it. Hopefully this isn't going to be another Windseeker situation

We're being sarcastic. (Yet another reason for the need for a specific sarcasm font…) To my knowledge, Fury has stopped on the lift hill because of a sensor 3 times this season, with none of those stops resulting in any kind of emergency evacuation and with no injuries reported from any of them. However, the GP (general public) has completely blown those stops out of proportion and has reported them to the local media, which caused a bit of a sh!tstorm. People were threatening to boycott the park until the ride was safe, etc. It resulted in the Department of Labor being called in to do an inspection and official deem the coaster "safe". (Which it was safe all along…the safety sensors were doing their job…if the ride HADN'T stopped after a sensor was triggered, then it would have been less safe.)

It's hard to imagine a future without Thunder Road.... :(

You really are growing up! I like the new and improved tarheel1231. The official CC Mom is proud of you. :)

I forgot to mention…For those of you saying we could have a coaster named Powder Keg, there is already a ride called Powder Keg. It's a launched coaster at Silver Dollar City in Branson. (And it's a fun little ride!) It replaced a supercool ride called Buzzsaw Falls, which was half coaster, half water ride. There is information about Buzzsaw Falls starting at 2:30 in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WOneYc2NkA I would love to see something like Buzzsaw Falls come into the park, just with less technical issues...

^ I thought about that knowing that SDC already has a launched coaster with the name of Powder Keg. Maybe it could be something Powder Keg related like "Barrel Blast" and the theming could involve Thunder Road (something like "Thunder Road Gunpowder Co.")

Nuupe, because remember, they said they are retiring the ride to make room for future family-fun attractions.

omg they listened to the idiots that want a separate entrance to the water park and will burn thunder road to the ground to do it. FML

Memorial Day was a blast! We left early because we literally rode everything. Got there at about 11, all day most of the lines ranged from reasonably short to nonexistent (most people were in Boomerang Bay). We were among the first in line waiting for Thunder Road to open (man, there were a few upset people that were obviously sad, and some who were kinda pissed). The ride op got asked by a little boy if they were really getting rid of Thunder Road and she said, albeit jokingly, that they were gonna tear it down to the ground.

I was on two different trains filmed for the news segments, and was going to be interviewed but I didn't have enough time. I overheard the newscaster, who used the words "demolition" and "tear down" repeatedly. I also chatted up someone who very clearly knew what was going down next year (don't worry, not the Dippin Dots girl or the basketball guy!! lol), who said Cedar Fair felt the park's coaster additions over the years (prior to CF) have made the park very (and I quote) "stagnant" and CF wants to revitalize Carowinds and turn it into a major destination that will draw in a lot of enthusiasts. (essentially backing up that whole Cedar Point South thing...) They stopped short of saying if the ride will be fully removed, but her language did include the phrase "shut down", so take that however you want.

I also talked to a couple of other workers (this time much closer to being Dippin Dots girls and basketball guys -just out of curiosity) one seem to be under the impression a "big ole water ride" is gonna be coming -not that they would know, just interesting employee gossip probably fueled from this very site.

Using the shortcut behind the Skytower I got to see up close what work is being done on the ride. Then it really hit me. They added Cobra, Intimidator, Fury, Windseeker, and Taste of the Carolinas. They brought back Harmony Hall, overhauled the entrance to give it a little 'new south' flair, and are now refurbishing skytower. Their idea of Carowinds is definitely to bring back some theme, while also making the park modern. At the end of the day, I am really glad that CF is in charge -but that doesn't mean I agree with every single decision they make. And that certainly doesn't change my support for the #SaveThunderRoad movement. (BTW: I just checked and the petition has over 2,000 signatures!)

Also, I finally got to ride Fury in the front and back. Amazing! Easily my favorite!!!
