CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Carowinds and coaster fans alike join in to say, ‘ThanksThunderRoad’. The iconic wooden coaster is set to give its last ride on Sunday, July 26.

Carowinds will offer riders special Thunder Road memorabilia to celebrate this historic coaster.

From now until July 26, the first 100 riders will receive a FREE commemorative Thunder Road button.
Starting July 13 through July 26, the first 48 riders (first two trains of the day) will get a FREE celebratory poster of the wooden coaster, in addition to the aforementioned commemorative button.

Additional keepsakes will be available for purchase including Thunder Road model sets, commemorative pins, t-shirts and more.

Thunder Road opened in 1976 and has given nearly 40,000,000 rides to fans. Guests have until July 26 at 10 p.m. to take part in the Thunder Road celebration.

^ Did someone forget Woodstock Express? Plenty of airtime for the little ones... and big ones alike.

Woodstock express is more of a ride for toddlers in my opinion.
It is nowhere near as tall as the Thunder Road and it certainly does not have the same air time.

Reminds me of when Busch Gardens Williamsburg removed Big Bad Wolf. It fit that category as well. Fortunately Busch Gardens replaced it with Verbolten which was able to have the same height limit and serve the same purpose as a fun coaster that fit that middle ground between the kiddie rides and the big adult coasters. That was one situation where while I was very upset to see Big Bad Wolf go (more than Thunder Road to be honest) I thought Busch did an excellent job of replacing it. I hope Carowinds is able to replace Thunder Road with something similar (hopefully a good wooden coaster) in a couple of years after they finish their water park stuff.

5. Acceptance - "Something exciting will come next year. I'm sure they had no choice."

I'm at 4.5. I don't care about what's coming next year if it has anything to do with water because I'm not a water ride/park gal so it won't interest me. I'm not renewing my pass but not mainly because of ThunderRoad... It was my first time ever getting a pass just because of Fury325. If it weren't for Fury, I probably wouldn't be going as much. I was tired of riding Intimidator and Afterburn on repeat. I'm going to venture out to KD next summer and get a pass there. I've been a Carowinds freak for so long I've forgotten about how close I am to KD also. And I still haven't gotten on i305 yet.

I don't see the big deal about the ThunderRoad extremist. They are sad. In shock. Desperate. If they don't want to spend their money somewhere where they aren't going to be happy, and voice their opinion about it, then big woop. I'm sure Carowinds hears complaints about everything under the sun all year long. And I'm just used to people complaining on FB in general . But once it's gone, it'll all be over and everyone will move with with their lives. Then we won't have to see anymore "savethunderroad" or the corny "burnthunderroad" or whatever people are putting.

I still love Carowinds.

Hey that's a little harsh IMO. I don't even liked the darn ride(only been on 3 times in my life) but I'm still angered just from the sheer principle. Is nothing sacred anymore? This is the biggest symbol of Carowinds left standing and was once a significant part of the park experience and arguably still is from a historical perspective. cedar fair has done crazy good by this park but this is just too much I think. I'm the guy who wants a strata coaster ala top thrill dragster at this park. If they announced that this what would replace thunder road I would still be against it.... I just feel like this is something you don't touch. I'm 21 and I feel more and more of my generation has lost the ability to appreciate what has come before and that's sad. From a business standpoint what they are doing makes sense but again....they could afford to keep this up and still be incredibly rich I think.

I don't understand the illogical point of not renewing a pass but still going to the park like 2-4 times. I run a business. I LOATHE running specials/sales because that's when I lose some profits. I would rather everyone purchase at standard value. I would think carowinds would rather sell more gate price tickets as well. And how much more is a platinum pass anyway? I have been caught in situations when I said "meh...I'm not gonna be going to carowinds much next year, no pass for me" then ended up at carowinds, kings island, cedar point AND knotts! #FML

So just wondering, will the poster and pin be given to all MC3 participants? Because if not then the first 48 riders on the 26th will likely be MC3 participants who will be in the park before it opens.. That would be pretty disappointing to any GP/casual coaster fan who tries to run to TR at opening to get there first haha

They sure are doing a whole lot of promotion and publicity for a ride they are getting ready to tear down. Right before the 40th anniversary. I am beginning to wonder if they may be indeed planning some sort of retrofit or redesign afterall. Could be wrong, but why would they actively publicize the demise of a popular attraction that will only make most folks sad or mad? From a PR standpoint, it seems more like negative publicity rather than appealing nostalgia. Unless they have some sort of unexpected surprise in mind. But probably just wishful thinking I guess.
