General Carowinds discussion
#80384
A bit of background information: My name is Jarrett and I'm actually from Ohio but I've been to Carowinds 3 times (about to be 4 in a few weeks) and love the park. This RCT3 project I'm showcasing here is just an idea I've had for a while that I'm showing off and while it's being shown in the RCT3 community, I thought the Carowinds community should see it as well. So sit back and enjoy!

(That being said, I am new here, so if I messed anything up making this thread any mods are welcome to fix it as necessary. I apologize in advance if I should have put this somewhere else, ect.)

Well I was at the park today and I noticed something odd when I went for a spin on Vortex.

Image
It had just opened back up and I saw them sent this test train around and got in line.

Image
The park was dead today so I was the only one waiting for them to reopen.

Image
Well I got in line...

Image
And I noticed this segment that had been painted orange just out of the blue (or should I say, red :P ). What the heck? Why did they do this?

I went to go check out Vortex today only to find it shut tightly for some reason.

Image
Carowinds wasn't very busy today, as usual, but that only added to the ghost town atmosphere of Carolina Showplace, the absence of Vortex's signature B&M roar casting a deafening silence over the plaza.

Image
Stuck in the station, I assumed there was a mechanical issue with it, something fairly rare for that coaster.

Image
Silent as the day it was topped off...

Image
They weren't even testing it or making any effort to test it.

Image
However, when I talked to this ride op by the chained off entrance, he said that it was actually down for scheduled maintenance. I also noted the removed ride signage. When I asked him why they were maintaining it and why the sign was down, he told me that "they're doing something to it," and that they were going to announce it soon. I'm getting excited!

Image
I caught two guys, one being a park exec and I think the other was an engineer, with survey equipment by the queue line. I wasn't sure, but the engineer seemed to have an accent from what I overheard, possibly French or Italian.

Image
After a while, I got sick of waiting for them to reopen it and just gave up on photographing that orange track bit and went to ride Fury.

What on earth is happening to Vortex?

But seriously, I can't wait to see how this story turns out!

The predrop's there, I think it was just the angle. But you'll see more today! And it starts getting good today!

I tried to recreate the park once, but I lost interest for some reason.

Thanks! You'll see another today and that's when it starts getting good! I almost lost interest in this but with what I intend to do with this and the direction in which I take it, I had to go through with it.

Sad news for Vortex fans today.

Image
We all saw how this went for Thunder Road. Looks like two Carowinds classics in the span of two years could be meeting the wrecking ball. :(

Image
Vortex opened in 1992 as the last addition before the Paramount era began in the park's history.

Image
But after 24 years, looking at the tweet it looks like it might be joining Skyrider and Shockwave in the great amusement park in the sky.

Image
But that one question remains...why the orange paint on that one section?

Now they insisted that Vortex was not going anywhere. Of course they denied the rumors about Thunder Road as well. Now this latest tweet from management seems to indicate otherwise. But I wonder if they are planning a Rougerou conversion for Vortex like Mantis, or have some other plans in mind. I would prefer a coaster to remain, no matter what type.

Well Vortex is not my preferred ride, and I would not mind them converting it like Rougerou. But they said they were not going to. Oh well.

Okay. First of all, I was told that back in JANUARY.
Which was about 7 months ago. Obviously, things can change at any notice.
Just like what I'm working on now. These are preliminary designs and can change without notice. So all of my hard work so far can possibly change depending on budget and time. I can't release any further details I'm afraid. I just wanted to use it as an example to say that plans can change on a dime.

The reason why I stated that back in January (and several times since) is because
Vortex just happens to be one of the last stand-ups in the world and a B&M nonetheless. With us having it in our park, it makes Carowinds very unique.

This from John Taylor after the Fury 325 construction tour. I also spoke with others (including Mike) about this and they pretty much said the same thing. However, if the park and coaster could benefit from it (which I now think it would), then Cedar Fair will do it, regardless of history.
Do I think it could/will happen? Yes and no. Yes, because it would make the ride much better. No because there's still the chance that it won't happen just because of what I stated earlier. It's 50/50.

I hope I don't sound rude, but I'm tired of that coming back up.
That information was (and could still be) true information. It CAN become false information if the park decides to change their plans about Vortex.

This does NOT mean that I don't want a Rougarou Treatment. I'd love it to happen, considering that I don't even ride it anymore.
All I was saying is that the park ORIGINALLY had plans to NOT change it in any way, except for new trains and new load/unload methods, and a new paint scheme.

Until park management says otherwise, this is what I will go with.

They knew 7 months ago that Thunder Road was going to be removed. They just weren't going to tell you. Or anyone.

Once again, he's not going to tell someone (who made a badass model) at Fury's media day what Carowinds five year plan is. He gets paid to lie to people like us when he gets asked questions like that.
